Indeed. After reading this article I decided to quickly pop by again and retract my previous “Obama seems to be pissing off all the right people at the moment” comment. Fack.
I continue to think that the U.S. is a somewhat unwilling junior partner in this particular enterprise, that it was going to go ahead with only a few European countries on board, and that Obama decided at the last minute to get involved rather than risk being seen as the guy who did nothing while a major city was attacked.
As to the Libyan insurgents being mainly islamists and Al Qaeda sympathizers, this seems a bit far-fetched to me, but I await proof of same, figuring the more likely ratio to be one quarter radical islamists and a handful of Al Qaeda.
Isn’t it more likely to be a tribal conflict fuelled in part by the desire of more westernized Libyans to escape from the very limited nature of the Gadhafi regime outside his own tribal sphere of influence where he seems to be hanging on to power?
As to any sensible end game to this, it now has to be a total end of the Gadhafi regime, otherwise there will be a cycle of reprisals followed by terrorist strikes in revenge.
Much as I dislike Obama, I don’t really think he’s the main player in this, Sarkozy and Cameron are proactively running this show and Obama just didn’t want to be shown up. Whether Sarkozy and Cameron have their ducks in a row or not remains to be seen. While many have been critical of this intervention, the one major thing it has accomplished (apparently) is to prevent a large-scale massacre in Benghazi. As to those who say well so what to that, I can’t really offer much of a further defence than do unto others and the idea that if our value system means anything, it must apply even where mere expediency or self-interest might say otherwise.
Obamba has thrown everyone he knows and anyone he has ever thought about “Under the bus”.
Some on the left are actually catching on now. Amazing.
The best illustration I can think of regarding Obama’s indecision is the platoon leader in “Band of Brothers” who simply defers all decisions. His indecision is irritating but harmless until the $%it hits the fan whereupon it gets a lot of good men killed. This is what most concerns me about Obama. He is in so far over his head that he doesn’t even realize how dangerous his incompetence is to everyone around him in a very dangerous world. The result is that he doesn’t give a second thought to glib pronouncements followed by wishy washy behaviour followed by blissful inattention to the bear he’s just poked with a stick. The man is a complete menace. Much as I may detest Hillary, she seems at the least to be able to grasp the gravity of a situation, communicate a position and make a freaking decision. Obama is a menace to humanity on so many levels.
Peter O’Donnell well said. One report that I read suggested that Libya is made up of basically two tribes, one in the west centered around Tripoli and another centered in the Benghazi area on the eastern side.
Too bad Dubya is not on the Libya file.

Col. Omar should have been removed decades ago. Though now that the Al-Quaeda/Muslim Brotherhood is on the rise, it could actually get worse. They don’t even have a self-preservation instinct that could be played to by the West.

Yep, and people laughed when Daffy Duck claimed that Al Queda was involved. Classic case of ad hominem: “Daffy is evil therefore everything he says is a lie”.
Naturally Daffy warned about Al Queda for propaganda purposes, but there was still an element of truth. And it could turn out to be prophetic — don’t forget that Daffy is a Marxist revolutionary government, albeit Libya is officially Islamist and Arabic in name the Bin Ladin crew would consider him a complete infidel for mixing Marxist secular-atheist ideology with Islam.
Reminds me of when the dictator Anastasio Somoza was facing the revolution in Nicaragua in the late ’70’s. Somoza warned time and again that the revolutionaries were not democratic they were Communists — his intelligence people knew this and he was telling the truth. But nobody believed him because who wants to take their cues from a dictator? Anyway, Somozas warnings turned out to be prophetic and after the Communists took over the number of murders, tortures and human rights violations statistically multiplied tenfold.
What the H.el is Canada doing in Libya? We over stayed our time in Afganistan and now add this farce to it. For once can’t the Euros carry the ball. I’ve been saying that all week.
France prematurely recognized the “rebels” as the new de facto government, K-Daffy hit back at the rebels and was rolling them up(we should take note of his successful technique and use it in Afghanistan), now NATO is bailing out this French/British gaffe by making sure the “rebels” actually do form the new Libyan government.
What proof do we have that K-Daffy was slaughtering real civilians?
None, this is just a figleaf for military action by NATO.
(it should be noted that the “rebels” use “civilians” to do things that we use uniformed members of our armed forces to do and that the “rebels” are in fact heavily armed “civilians”)
Are we there because we want their oil?
“What proof do we have that K-Daffy was slaughtering real civilians?”
Do we really need proof? — Daffy’s history of terrorism goes back 50 years. He was once the “big daddy” terror sponsor of them all before Al Queda came along. He even set up shop in Latin America to support the Commie revolutions there back in the ’80’s.
That being said, it’s highly dubious that whatever replaces Daffy will be an improvement unless there are clear democratic goals. After all, Daffy had been behaving himself lately…
No one seems to actually have ‘cottoned on” to just what is going on in the WH and the ‘US policy’.

And, if by some miracle ( the kind that exposed East Anglia E-mails and the fraud that IS Man Made Global Warming) we get ahead of this curve we will perhaps find we have no money to operate. SOMEBODY send Boehner and McConnell the MEMO!
Do we really need proof?
Yes.
We need proof because there were no mass graves in Bosnia, Kosovos, Croatia(which was the justification for our participation there) and NATO did in those places exactly what they are doing in Libya under the same pretext.
I suppose you think K-Daffy was winning against the “rebels” because he was expending his limited military resources on civilians instead of fighting the “rebels”.
“We need proof because there were no mass graves in Bosnia, Kosovos, Croatia”
Actually there were some mass graves — Canadian forensic experts were there digging them up and analyzing the bodies. This has been documented and I have seen video documentaries. What is in question is who did what and to what extent and who the victims/perpetrators really were. Apparently much of the original info was false.
My question “do we really need proof” re: Libya is rhetorical. Daffy has had no compunction about killing civilians in the past, and his own son announced something to the effect that “Libyan blood would run”, “thousands would be killed”, etc.
As in the case of Saddam Hussein, I have no special place in my heart for Daffy because he should have been captured and tried in an International court years ago and spent the rest of his life in jail. But like you, I wonder about the wisdom of invading the guy at this point in history. Harper was right about freezing Daffy’s assets but taking the additional step of military action — because the Iggy opposition and ‘Bama and the Euro global blockheads said so, I have my druthers.
Ok, I’m confused.
We’re at war with Taliban in Afghanistan but now we support them by bombing the crap out of the Libyan military because they were fighting their people, whereas the Gulf island fiefdoms are given a pass to attack their people.
As well I can’t recall where Libya fits in the terrorist picture, (besides Lockerbe)
So who’s side am I suppose to be cheering for again?
ricardo .
“Daffy has had no compunction about killing civilians in the past”
Yea, so what? Neither does our governments, when they feel the need too.
There are far bigger atrocities being committed around the globe, and no one cares a lick.
Gaddafi is no threat to anyone but a segment of his tiny country of 5 million people (those that disagree with him. Point of fact many do agree with him). Therefore the only reason we are there is for Libya’s oil period. Stealing it may seem like a strategic advantage for our future at face value, but the fact is, we get none of it.
This is a commercial enterprise for Italy and France, along with the big corporate oil companies. We pay the bill for the jackboots to go in and rob the country. Afterwards we will take the fallout, in restructuring, mass immigration and terrorism.
Not a good deal for the western taxpayer, by any account.
Well said, Knight 99.
This is international scale corruption and warmongering on the part of our government and NATO.
When Russia or China does the same we won’t have a leg to stand on and it will be the height of hypocrisy to condemn them for it.
This is how the world gets divied up into 3 permanently warring factions that ends up in a 3 point balance of continual war in Orwell’s 1984.
Anybody who thinks they understand it…hasn’t been properly briefed.
There is good reason to believe that the, Obama appointed, head of the NSC (National Security Council) has his inexperienced/uninformed, head-strong, hands all over this.
The NSC is supposed to merge CIA, FBI, NSA,NIA etc.
No expirience or knowledge…a party hack. An unintelligent intelligence chief……
The blind leading the blind….
“What proof do we have that K-Daffy was slaughtering real civilians?”
At least two of his fighter pilots flew their aircraft to Malta and defected rather than bomb Libyan towns. There’s video out there of fighters strafing the city of Tripoli. There’s video on Al Jazera of tanks firing on towns.
MooMoo is presently sitting on tons of mustard and nerve gas, and has ample equipment available to use it. MooMoo already coughed up one nuke and gave it to George Bush after Saddam showed up on ABC News getting dragged out of a hole in the ground by the US Marines. Nobody seemed to know he had that one, maybe he could have another one.
What’s the civilian casualty cut-off before you think it would be ok if NATO pulls their thumbs out? 100,000? 200,000? Couple million?
The Phantom >
Usually I tend to agree with your comments, unfortunately not this time.
You’re comments about this whole Libyan affair sound a little like Princess Lea’s beleaguered rebel forces teaming up with the Ewoks to overthrow Vaders Galactic Imperial forces.
Never underestimate the power of the NATO/ US / UN propaganda machine.
This is, was, and never will be about saving little brown Libyan people. This is about oil & empire, full stop. When Gaddafi is eventually overthrown, there will be another puppet in place (not necessarily an American one, as they appear to be shooting blind). The Libyan people will be not one inch closer to greater prosperity or safety than they were under his regimen.
If this was indeed a legitimate civil war, then it should have been left as such. I doubt it ever was, more like a manufactured insurrection from the outside.
At least two of his fighter pilots flew their aircraft to Malta and defected rather than bomb Libyan towns. There’s video out there of fighters strafing the city of Tripoli. There’s video on Al Jazera of tanks firing on towns.
~Phantom
Al Jazeera, isn’t that the Islamist TV network that championed the Egyptian Revolution?(Gee, look how that’s turned out for the Muslim Brotherhooh, eh?)
That isn’t proof of K-Daffy targeting civilians.
The 2 defecting pilots were Islamic fundamentalists who supported the rebels, the fighter jets and tanks were attacking rebel positions in Tripoli and towns.
Why would K-Daffy expend his limited munitons against loyal or non-aligned civilians?
What has he to gain from it?
Saying he is attacking his own people for no reason is plain stupid.
I can see why you stopped watching TV what with your unskeptical impressionable mind, Phantom.
A reminder of the size of the Libyan Army – quick wiki search….. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Libyan_Army
“In 2009 the IISS estimated that the Libyan Ground Forces numbered 25,000 with an additional, estimated, 25,000 conscripts (total estimated 50,000).”
That’s smaller than Obamba’s “security force” left behind in Iraq after the so called troop withdrawal. Less experienced, less equipped and far fewer professional “contractors” as in Blackwater.
Not exactly a global armada threatening western countries in anyway. If Gaddafi had nukes, they’d know about it.
With all the European and US tours, photo ops & dinner regalia’s lately with Sarkozi, Merkel, Obomba why would he try doing anything with a nuke even if he had one or two, a little suicidal no?
Of course that’s all changed now. What would he have to lose? If he actually possessed a nuke, there would be no reason not to use it at this stage of his failed career.
First! Woohoo! Go get ’em, Kate!
