  5. Sorry for the long post, but I thought this comment on the Moore story was worth repeating:
    “Where does Moore get his data suggesting that America is not broke? His bank account?
    The US has a national taxpayer debt of $14 trillion dollars+ new Presidential commitments for $10 trillion dollars in taxpayer debt+ a federal unfunded liability [taxpayer debt] for social security and medicare of $107 trillion taxpayer dollars. That is a total of $131 trillion dollars, which equates to over $400,000 for every man, woman and child.
    The federal government has federal tax revenue of $2.2 trillion dollars, but spends $3.7 trillion, which just adds more to the debt. The whitehouse budget shows little, if any inprovement over the next 5 years.
    The states are in just about as bad shap. It is estimated that the states have nearly $5 trillion in unfunded liabilities [taxpayer debt] for union employee pensions.
    Moodys’ continually warns us about down grading our credit which will cost us more to borrow money from China, to whom we already owe $1.6 trillion.
    The people who borrowed money for home loans which they could not pay back aided the destruction of our housing and credit markets. The government who borrows money to spend on their prize programs are about to bring down our entire economy in the same manner.
    For Moore to say it isn’t so, is merely the end justifying the means to advance his own Marxist agenda.
    I hope Michelle puts him on a diet.”

    Obviously a big player in the scandal. Did she forget to pay back a campaign loan? No, actually, one of her people asked for (and did not receive?) a campaign contribution in lieu of a lease payment, which is a no no. Well at least a judicial committee didn’t find she ripped off the taxpayers without restitution. Cause that would be almost as bad.

    Snippet: The third Mason-style moment concerned Mr. Mayrand’s attempt to show that his office had not given the press or the Liberal party a heads-up on the police raid on Conservative Party HQ. In his opening statement the Chief Electoral Officer said an internal review had cleared him and his staff, though when Scott Reid on a point of order required him to table the review he quickly downgraded it to “not truly a report, barely a sheet.”
    So Mr. Poilievre asked who conducted the review and Mr. Mayrand grudgingly confessed that it was one M. Mayrand. Since he certainly wouldn’t let the Tories investigate themselves on the in-and-out affair, Mr. Poilievre called it surprising that he’d think it appropriate to investigate himself on the leak. And it is.

    “‘We will not pick up toxic new bulbs’: Councils say energy-saving lights are too dangerous for binmen”
    “Councils across the UK are refusing to pick up low-energy lightbulbs from homes as they contain toxic mercury, which gives off poisonous vapours.
    But confused consumers are putting the new bulbs – classed as hazardous waste – in their dustbins when they burn out, potentially putting the safety of thousands of binmen at risk.
    Previously, the public disposed of traditional lightbulbs, used in Britain for 120 years, in a domestic bin.
    However, they are being phased out under a European Union ruling and are being replaced with energy-saving bulbs, many of which contain mercury.
    Last night UNISON, the union which represents thousands of rubbish collectors across Britain, said it was concerned at the risks binmen are facing.
    A spokeswoman said: ‘We are worried as most people do not know these bulbs are not to be put in dustbins. The Government is not doing enough to make people aware of the risks.’
    The most common types of low-energy bulbs are known as ‘compact fluorescent lamps’.
    A study by Germany’s Federal Environment Agency found that when one of them breaks, it emits levels of toxic vapour up to 20 times higher than the safe guideline limit for an indoor area.
    If a bulb is smashed, the UK’s Health Protection Agency advice is for householders to evacuate the room and leave it to ventilate for 15 minutes.”

    “Cities burning midnight oil on disposing banned light bulbs”
    “Still in the dark about a nationwide ban on inefficient light bulbs, cities have a bright idea to leave disposing of their toxic energy-saving replacements up to producers.
    Announced by the federal government in 2007, a nationwide ban on the sale of incandescent light bulbs — aimed at cutting greenhouse gas emissions and save on electricity costs for homeowners — will be implemented by 2012, and the more environmentally friendly compact fluorescent bulbs will take their place.
    Cities, including Calgary, are still figuring out how it will deal with the collection and disposal of the toxic bulbs, which contain small amounts of mercury.
    But Saturday, at a Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) conference in Newfoundland, members passed a resolution asking the federal government to consider enacting a program calling on manufacturers to take on the disposal role when the bulbs reach the end of their lives, said Ald. Brian Pincott, on the FCM board.
    “Cities are in charge of landfills and we can’t have these things in the landfills,” he said.
    “We are asking for a national extended producer program.
    “And we are also looking for the feds to work with the provinces and municipalities to come up with a program.”
    It essentially means the responsibility of disposing the bulbs would fall on the manufacturers.”
