  4. Please send a brief message to the troops. There are fewer and fewer messages I find, and often they are weekly from the same people.
    Go to http://www.forces.gc.ca and pick English or French and then click on the right hand side box which says Write to the Troops. You can write a bilingual message if you want.
    Valentine’s Day is coming and I know that the U.S. troops get tons of cards and letters, much less e-mails.

  9. Thanks for that, Mike. Assuming a 5 day work week minus (at a minimum) two weeks holiday per year, officers at San Jose airport make a little over $942/day at taxpayer expense, in a state that’s in dire straights because of a mind-boggling budget deficit.

    Good news: they “overlap, and share common principles.” More good news: those principles have to do with “justice and progress; tolerance and the dignity of all human beings.” Who knew?

    Keen on democracy, are you? Do you view the pickle that Egyptian bad guy Hosni Mubarak finds himself in with glee? Are those rock-throwing multitudes in Egypt the “voice of democracy”?
    Maybe. But who or what is the demos, the people?
    The largest opposition group in Egypt — as in many Arab countries — is the Muslim Brotherhood. Officially, the group, which was founded in Egypt in 1928 by Hassan al-Banna (the grandfather of Muslim confidence man Tariq Ramadan), is banned in Egypt. No matter. It is nonetheless the “world’s most influential Islamist movement.” No one knows exactly how many members it has in Egypt. The number is certainly in the millions.
    What is the goal of the Muslim Brotherhood? To make the Koran the “sole reference point for … ordering the life of the Muslim family, individual, community … and state.”
    What is the means by which the Muslim Brotherhood seeks to achieve this goal? Jihad — a “grand jihad,” as one document puts it, which seeks to destroy Western civilization “from within and ‘sabotaging’ its miserable house by their hands and the hands of the believers so that it is eliminated and God’s religion is made victorious over all other religions.””

That is not, however, because it has accepted the principles of Western democracy, but rather because the democratic process can be exploited to establish an Islamic regime which will then render democracy unnecessary.
    * Muslim Brotherhood Supreme Guide Muhammad Mahdi ‘Akef told the Egyptian daily Al-Karama in 2007 that only Islam was the expression of true democracy. “Islam and its values antedated the West by founding true democracy, exemplified by the Shura [the advisory council under the Caliphs].”

  23. Thanks, EBD. I saw the Festival Express movie when it came out, and as I recall this was the first actual performance shown. It’s quite some time into the movie, you’re start to wonder whether anybody’s actually going to play something, and then out of the blue they hit you with this. And you start feeling much better about paying for your ticket. It’s non-stop fun from then on.

    Ummm that young guy took the beating that you wouldn’t wish on your best friend now was it? So what if the kid did the deed or not, At that time he was supposed to be Innocent until proven guilty? Ya know that funky finicky cornerstone that supposedly elevates the “western Worlds JUSTICE System” above the rest of those other countries? What ever happened to those with power must use it judiciously (Sarc pun intended.) These jackboots need to be put in their place in the same cell block along with the other criminals and inmates..
