    Since the 60’s, when the catch phrase of the times was anti-establishment, it has been all about power. So long as my party of choice is in the White House I will be fine with the policies. Ditto Canada.
    Our herd mentality hardly does us credit.

    Yes.
    If the GOP doesn’t cut taxes, deeply, the Taxed Enough Already Party is going to continue trying to fill the ranks of the GOP with Tea Party candidates.
    If that doesn’t work, the Tea Party will break with the GOP and form a 3rd national party.
    The Tea Party isn’t Republican, they just see their best chance at rolling back the size of government and it’s tax&spend policies as being within the GOP, for now.
    They aren’t going to wait for the GOP to get the message for very long.

  7. Well the Tea Party movement did not start until Mr.Obama became president. GWB spent money like a liberal, did nothing when the Republicans owned the Senate to repeal the disastrous Fanny Mae and Freddy Mac ‘policy’, wanted to accept illegal aliens as citizens….
    All I’m saying is past ‘performance’ lends itself to a good judgement of what will happen in the future.
    We shall see how many Tea Partiers are not Republican won’t we. Is it really about principles or power.
    My hope: principles. Past ‘performance’: power.

    ……….An answer: Of course. While the inspiration of the TEA Party is conservative/small government that does no translate into it being “Republican”.
    The TEA Party is a de facto 3rd Party which has been astute enough to avoid party statis to avoid “spitting” the vote and endorsing candidates which share it’s values, usually Republicans.
    A better question is will Gifford remain a Democrat?
    If she recovers her faculties enough to realize that Huffpo actually called for her assassination?

    Mere coincidence.
    And there were attempts to rein in Fanny and Freddy.
    The attempts just came too late and the Dems squashed those attempts.
    The Tea Party started with the Stimulus and ObamaCare, which just happened to be Obama policies.
    Since Obama took office he has increased the deficit by 84%.

    It isn’t going to make the Tea Party happy if the GOP congress wants to repeal ObamaCare and replace it with something similar.
    The only health care reform the American people want is to see tort law reform and increased portability so they can keep their insurance carriers when having to relocate across state lines.
    They don’t want more government(more government = more taxes) which is what the GOP is offering with their “alternate” health care plan.

  10. I will suggest that the Tea Party will stick around for quite a while.
    However, as it ages, it will begin to get more organized and centralized … maybe elect it’s own leaders and councils and secretaries and treasurers.
    Then it will look for funding and permanent offices in DC … then it will become just another special interest group to be paid off and given lip service.

    They may continue, but it will be as a shadow of their 2009-2011 strength. Let’s not kid ourselves, probably 50% of the people at those rallies are/were anti-left, anti-Obama, anti-Democrat. Sure the other 50% will still preach their Libertarian, small government, low tax beliefs, but the zeal and the energy will be diluted by a Republican administration. And that will make them all the easier for the MSM to ignore.

We already had a Tea Party Movement and it forced the then Liberals to balance the budget and cut taxes and it prodded the Liberals to lay the foundation for the economic security we are enjoying today. It was called the Reform / Alliance Party and it’s leader Preston Manning fundamentally changed Canada’s political culture.
    The Conservative Party now holds the mantle passed from the Reform Party. If the Conservatives fail in honoring the core principles of the Reform Party then the old passions will reignite and a new conservative movement will emerge.

    Yes there were attempts to fix Fanny and Freddy , but GWB had 4 years. Not much of a priority. Tea Party formed?
    What was the fallout amongst the right wing crowd after the suggestion of making illegal aliens citizens? Riots – in the streets – here in America? (ok, I’m poking fun at the Liberals – couldn’t resist) Nope.
    The past performance of both left and right in North America prove the political parties are obsessed with power. Mostly, the rest of us just chew our cud.
    I hope the Tea Party continues if the principles of the GOP do not follow the Tea Party mandate. But history is the teacher. I’m not holding my breath.

    Now we have a party which will do alot of very unconservative things to STAY IN POWER. Yes, a minority parliament is unstable but the Conservatives have sold their principles many times the past 4 years.
    Here’s an interesting conundrum: The formation of the Reform Party was a party formed on principles. But it hacked up the right wing in Canada so as to allow Jean Chretien the ability to stay in power. In retrospect, was the Reform Party a good thing ?
    Principle wise – yes. Power – maybe not!

    The Progressive Conservatives hacked up the right wing in Canada.
    If you’re too young to remember, check out their seat count after the 1993 election.
    When Alberta said the federal PC Party was over, it was over.
    Those who continued to vote PC in federal elections after 1993 were the ones responsible for splitting the conservative vote.

  17. I pointed this very thing out to a Lefty & Centrist friend of mine a few weeks ago! I asked them why it was, now that Obama is carrying out pretty much the same foreign policy as Bush, that they and all their friends on the Far & Centre Left are absolutely silent. An uncomfortably long pause ensued. It was beautiful!!!

    Instead of not holding your breath you should instead do something about it!
    The ‘GWB started the deficit’ is a red herring argument used by the Left to justify the historic and meteoric rise in BO’s deficit spending. Without acknowledging that, one would assume someone is trolling. The fact is, GWB is not the first POTUS to fall into deficit spending, so it isn’t the ‘smoking gun’ many try and make it out to be. If you ask most conservatives, their biggest criticism of GWB is the deficit spending. No one leader is going to be perfect in anyone’s eyes, and GWB is no exception. Deficit spending under GWB is directly related and parallel to the Dems taking the House and the Senate. Any honest commentator is aware of this.
    The mistake the Dems made is instead of embracing the Tea Party, they demonized it, leaving the Tea Party only one viable political option. The Dems put their totalitarian agenda (long term game plan) ahead of what their constituency were demanding which alienated millions that voted for BO who now are TEA party members.

  19. And yes, the commentator in the clip is correct, the Anti-war movement is nothing more than an Anti-GOP & Anti-conservative movement. Just as the Feminist, Gay, Union, Islamic, Black, Latino, environmental and every other victims lobby is. Relatively speaking, women, gays, laborers, muslims, blacks, Latinos, and envirowackos have nothing to complain about with respect to rights, fairness, opportunity and stewardship in the United States or Canada. Yet their constant harping about nonsensical issues, that are blown way out of proportion relative to the real issues we face; betrays their true motives and hate for conservatives.
    This begs the question: Why do they hate conservatives so much?
    Quite simple really; because without exception, each and every one of the aforementioned victim groups are first and foremost ‘rent seekers’; and one thing that conservatives hate are rent seekers. Victim groups are always Left, because they are engaged in the never ending war vs. conservatives in an attempt to preserver their entitlements that are predominately paid by conservatives through taxation/theft.

  21. Not really, Lethbridge. The real blow to structural deficits in the early 1990s was the threatened downgrade of Canada’s credit rating. As long as Reform and PC and Bloq all existed, the Liberals were assured of a permanent majority government. Chretien could afford to ignore the concerns of Reform. And by and large he did so.
    It was the Moodys credit rating report that turned the tide. A credit downgrade would wreck the federal government’s finances by raising borrowing costs greatly. And just as they had done so many times in the past, the Liberals took over the policy of an opposition party and made it their own. Just like the Liberals had done with NDP social policies in the 1970s, the Reform was in no position to object to the government’s fiscal restraints starting in 1995.
    The basis of political support for the Liberal government was 104 seats in Ontario. Preston Manning had virtually no audience in that province in the mid-1990s. It was the Liberals who went out and sold the need for restraint; there was no great Ontario protest demanding the government rein in its budgets. As the financial centre of Canada, the threatened credit downgrade resonated far more loudly than Manning ever could.

  22. The anti-war movement, like the anti-poverty movement, the environMENTAL movement, the femminist movement and just now the anti-incivility movement are all explained by one, simple word: Astroturf. Shut off the money spigot and they vanish as if by magic.
    I sometimes wonder how many of the trolls and agents provocateur Kate gets in the comments are paid astroturfers. But then I think about the quality level, and conclude that if this is the best they can do, we have nothing to worry about.

BTW, I think the Tea Party is going to replace the Republicans as the Conservative choice over the next few election cycles, the Republicans will become the new home of the scumbag Washington elite (Liberal Party), and the DemocRats are going to end up a busted rump of hard core leftist nutroots, like the NDPee.

    How do you think Sen. Lindsey Graham acquired the epithet “Grahamnesty”? The same conservatives who later formed the Tea Party went apesh*t on McCain, Bush, Graham, and the other advocates of Amnesty. That notion was quashed.
    There was actually quite a bit of dissatisfaction among conservatives during the Bush administration. Note the McCain campaign garnered nothing more than perfunctory interest from the base until Palin was put on the ticket.
    I think the thesis you’re hinting at — that the Tea Party phenomenon is a disingenuous reaction against these policies only because the Democrats are now in power — is incorrect. Revolt on the Right had been brewing for some time.

  25. MissAnthropy is correct. Anyone who lives in the USA or has traveled there will tell you, people are f-ing terrified of losing everything they have to public debt. The Tea Party was a 100% spontaneous reaction to Obama’s ruinous policies and the TARP bailout.
    Top Republicans are more in fear of the Tea Party than DemocRats are. As well they should be, because top Republicans fracking things up and going along for the DemocRat sleigh ride since Regan left office is the reason there even -is- a Tea Party.
    Americans are disgusted with and frightened of their government. They are going to chop it down to size, and the November rout of the Dems was the first chop. Pretty soon I think they are going to go get a chain saw.
