The Big Two-O

You are Sitemeter visitor number…

With the year winding down, this seems a very good time to thank you all – readers, tipsters, guest bloggers, and sponsors – for helping make SDA the success it has become!
Update! And here’s our visitor number 20,000,000.
2million.jpg
Note: I use the Sitemeter count to mark SDA traffic milestones because it’s the public counter displayed on the blog. However, it’s not as accurate as the internal logs. For example, while Sitemeter shows 4,302,538 visits to the site since January 1st, internal logs indicates 4,596,908 “viewed traffic” (omitting robots, etc.). This evening there were as many as 8 visits per second coming into the blog.

  1. Can’t believe that I actually got the best number tonight, #20,000,002
This is way better than 20 million as it’s also palindromic.
Has anyone studied hit rates of web sites around the time leading up to significant numbers like say 20,000,000? I got the impression that the # of hits was increasing more quickly during the day than it usually does. Of course everyone will be refreshing their browsers more frequently hoping to be #20,000,002

  2. Refreshing or not I still will consider myself and tell my grandkids that I’m the 20M visitor.
Kate you have the best site on the web…thanks for your dedicated service and desire to be the counterbalance to the lie-beral media.
    Have a great New Year!

  3. My location comes in as unknown.
I’m on Borneo at the moment. I think my IP routes through Australia. But not too sure.

  4. dang.
I got stnoed on grass and missed the momentous moment.
anyway congrats Kate and remember it’s your readership that pushed it to 20 mill.
including several thousand from me. come to think of it, if I hadn’t posted that many I might have had a shot at the big one. LOL !!!

  5. Class action all the way. Against 20,000,000, 20,000,002, Kate, Vίt (for being 30,000,000) and EDB for a song mocking us for not being 20,000,000.
And like, 20,000,001, for being the first loser.

  6. Congratulations Kate, and thank you for providing a unique, creative forum where issue’s that are relevant are discussed from a variety of perspectives. I learn from everyone’s comments here and value your insights.
@Alex: I visit “liberal” blogs quite often. The problem I’ve encountered on these sites, Wonkette being a good example, is that as soon as you disagree, no matter how politely, or if one should happen to say something remotely clever (backed by facts), you are attacked on a personal level and then you are simply banned. Dissension is not tolerated, nor is any comment that is not 100% politically correct.
BTW, IMO,it is not polite to start a “my reading list is better than yours” on a thread that is celebrating a readership landmark for this particular blog. Me thinks some noses are possibly out of joint, but then again, what do I know.

  7. Refreshing or not I still will consider myself and tell my grandkids that I’m the 20M visitor.

  8. Horny: nobody said the site was boring. There’s a reason I have SDA in my RSS feed. I tend to skip over a good percentage of the “articles”, but find it to be a useful resource on the whole, although probably not for the same reasons as the majority of the readers,

  9. No-One: much of what you’ve said about wonkette applies equally to the comments here. You only need to scroll up to see it in action. Apparently, because I think a varied reading list is a good thing, and object to mindless stereotyping, that makes me a homeless leftist little pissant pussy who can’t hold down a job and sits at home all day collecting welfare.
Not that I’m complaining, mind you – I’ve come to expect such juvenile behavior – I just think it’s ridiculous for you to complain about encountering it on “liberal” blogs when it’s equally pervasive in the conservative community. The only difference seems to be that SDA has a more mature audience, so the childish behavior isn’t QUITE as bad as blogs which appeal to highschoolers and university students. It’s hardly something to be proud of, though.
I will give SDA credit for not banning people, though, and agree that, generally speaking, left-leaning blogs tend to be more likely to resort to bans. Once again, though, that’s just a broad generalization, and it hinges on how you define “left-leaning”. Judging by many of the responses around here, I get the feeling your definition might be quite a bit different than mine.

  10. An impressive stat, Kate, and thoroughly well deserved. I have been a devoted reader since 2005. I love your down-to-earth outlook, nasty political incorrectness, and how you’ve been at the forefront in the fight against this “global climate disruption” nonsense!
I also greatly enjoy reading the contributions of all commenters (self-professed geniuses included!). Reading your blog is a part of my daily routine.
Happy New Year, Kate, and to all of your readership!

  11. “that makes me a homeless leftist little pissant pussy who can’t hold down a job and sits at home all day collecting welfare.”
    Umm, yea-pretty much!

  12. Congratulations Kate – as you’re aware I’m not too proficient on the computer and I mainly visit here and Rebel With a Clause (Alex G. Tsakumis) to hear the political filth in Vancouver and Victoria. It is enough to keep me amused. Although you have peeked my interest on another site; where the Hell is Vanscoy? Would it be found on Google?

  13. I’m so nervous I can’t type. I’m just an average guy, this is all so overwhelming. I’m the 20,000,000th click. Thank you so much for the years of education, clarity, and wit you’ve bestowed upon us. You just keep getting better and better, which explains the huge traffic volume. God bless you, and may you have many years of continued success.
P.S. I’m headed for the tip jar.

  14. Congratulations Kate. Been visiting your site since the 2 million mark – way back when.
My must to visit daily –
    SDA
    BLY
    American Thinker
    Michelle Malkin
    Hot Air
    The Blaze
    Michael Savage
    Fox News
    NP
Globe and Mail – blogs for the laughs
    Ontario Newswatch
Keep up the great work and congrats again.
    Dolly

  15. Going to cancel my daily newspaper, dont need it anymore. If I need socialist approved, western hating talking points, I can always get them from the state propaganda arm. Uh, the ceeeb of course…
But thanks to my daily helping of SDA, I will still be the best-informed-on-current-events kid in the class .
    Thank you Kate

  16. @ Alex
nobody said the site was boring.
I call bullshit. For a guy who claims to be one of the smartest kids in the class you seem to have a reading comprehension deficiency.
    -My Hotmail
    -Drudge
    -Hot Air
    -Breitbart
    -Rush Limbaugh
    -Fox Live
    -Fox News.com
    -Small Dead Animals
    what an ungodly boring selection.
this is the biggest problem with conservatists; no imagination.

The beagle quite clearly includes SDA on a list he typifies as boring.

  17. I am curious re this
“There’s only one 20,000,000 and I’ve posted the screenshot. Sitemeter only counts your ip once very 100 visits, so if you were refreshing, you saw it record else’s visit, not yours. My apologies for wording the post the way I did. ”
Every 100 visits over what period of time?

  18. It’s not a period of time. IP addresses that come up more than once in every 100 visits are ignored.
So if you came in at 19,999,992 and hit refresh hoping to be #20 million, it wouldn’t count you a second time. It will display the new total, but you didn’t help it get there through browser refreshes.

  19. Wow this thread really exploded. Some people can find it boring. Is that not ok? Commentators shouldn’t feed trolls. Leave that to the billy goats!
I too like National Review but sometimes their positions on things are just so tired and repetitive that I can’t read it or take it anymore!
Big congrats to our host Kate though.

  20. Alex, I agree that having a broad range or reading material is a good thing and that at times there are some personal attacks. Most often though, the attacks are in retaliation to a troll or someone who is purposely being provocative. Given that most of us try to keep our responses brief and may not fully explain ourselves articulately enough, misunderstandings can also occur. I know that I have posted comments, and then upon reading them realized they came off in a way I did not intend.
I suggest you read over your previous comments – they came across as condescending and had the hint of does a blog with readers of such limited scope really deserve 20 million visitors.

  21. By contrast, I’ve had six visitors to my blog, “Large Living Rodents,” but then it’s clearly about Liberal MPs. So that explains the lack of interest.

  22. “Make that “peaked”!!!
Posted by: larben at December 29, 2010 11:18 PM”
Not to be too much of a PITA, but in order to prevent Alex from waxing ad nauseum about conservative ignorance, that word would be “piqued”…

  23. Give credit where credit is due! Great job Kate.
I like “Large Living Rodents” also. Great quip!

  24. @Alex
If you’re still around this thread, I would like to echo No-One’s comments. I think it’s great to have a varied reading list. I agree that juvenile attacks sometimes happen here.
And I’m not excusing them, but do you really believe you don’t provoke the attacks (or my own snarky responses) when you accuse the majority of readers of being “semi-literate dimwits” and “anti-science”, all the while proclaiming how you “object to mindless stereotyping”? It’s a bit too much hypocrisy to stomach don’t you think?
If you argue in good faith, skip the generalizations and ad hominem, and firmly but politely present your arguments, I think you’ll find you get a much different response from the vast majority of commenters.

  25. Best darn site on the ‘Net! I’ve said this before, but at 20 MILLION I feel the need to repeat – there’s not an aggregator site that I trust or enjoy more than SDA! Kate is a pure irreplaceable force of nature and the collection of people her site brings together daily are a very special lot indeed. Some lifer SDA’ers like “Cal2” are born troublemakers but the wit, concern, experience and character of SDA commenters put current events into sharp clear perspectives like no other place. Incidentally, I would love to see Cal2 run the CBC – I think he’d do Canada proud.
Thanks for the great work, Kate! Thanks too for the quality toils of your guest bloggers – they’ve done well to protect and enhance the quality of SDA!
To everyone in the SDA Nation – HAPPY NEW YEAR!

  26. Congrats Kate. To the trolls – doesn’t it really burn your a–, blogs like this counter your modern liberal progressive BS?

  27. Kate, until SUN TV comes onto the scene, you must know SDA is the defacto Conservative voice and sounding board in Canada, eh?
    Congratulations, you are the BEST!
    Happy New Year to all!

  28. Congratulations on the milestone, Kate. I’ve been lurked/contributed for 4 or 5 years now, and always entertained and very rarely bored.

  29. No-one: I never hinted at any of that, nor was I particularly condescending. I certainly WAS condescending to the few jackasses who chose to attack me – I subscribe to Homer’s “treat others the way they messed with you” theory on discourse. I can’t help it if you read things into my comments which aren’t there – once again, this comes down to your personal biases. If you want to see a pot-smoking sandal-wearing hippie bashing all that you hold dear, that’s what you’re going to see, and there’s not a damn thing I can do to stop it short of never saying anything at all.
Matt: I never accused “the majority of readers” of any such thing – I said that a significant number are, and that kate is throwing fuel on that particular fire. If a simple observation is enough to get everyone riled up, then you people really need to grow some thicker skin. For a crowd who are so proud of having all the “facts”, you sure do seem to be scared of being challenged on them.

  30. Matt/Dhimmi
What you said, as the troll started the wild-eyed accusations and attacks “Adam carrying a velociraptor”….but no longer wants to address his poorly worded, asinine comment, as if he never said it.
What Matt and Dhimmi said, were olive branches held out, to engage in constructive debate, to any troll for that matter.
Instead, said troll chose to stomp on the branch, rather than engage…typical troll.
Congrats Kate, first stumbled upon the site during the coalition of the swilling days, not so long ago. This has been the base of operations ever since, the first tab on my firefox.
    Frequented sites
    SDA
    Fox News
    Ceeb
    Mop and Pail
    Times Communist
    CNN
I know, what the hell, a lot of lefty MSM sites….need to keep tabs on the loony left and the lack of reporting nowadays….they specialize in news ‘repeating’, not reporting.
The TC, the Victoria deadtree media rag has become a sounding board of the NDP/Green agenda, yet, its readership and subscriber base keeps dropping…..when will they ever see the light, and realize they are torching their own business with their kneejerk, failed, leftwing idealism?
Long post…..but I wish “we were winning” the climate debate, and no doubt the tide is being pushed back, but the pressure cannot be let up. WWF is getting desperate, and this past week, took corporate execs of CocaCola, amongst others, to view the poor old polar bears north of Churchill, and gave them the one-way propaganda of ‘Global warming/Climate Change’ and the “poor old bears have no ice/they’re gonna starve” schtick they have perfected.
The war on our wallets from the AGW activists is far from over……..
