The not-so-obvious short answer is that the overall warming of the atmosphere is actually creating cold-weather extremes. Last winter, too, was exceptionally snowy and cold across the Eastern United States and Eurasia, as were seven of the previous nine winters.
The essence of their message was that they had consulted the Met Office, which advised them that, despite two harsh winters in succession, these were “random events”, the chances of which, after our long previous run of mild winters, were only 20 to one. Similarly, they were told in the summer, the odds against a third such winter were still only 20 to one. So it might not be wise to spend billions of pounds preparing for another “random event”, when its likelihood was so small.
Don’t they sell snow tires (or should I say tyres) in the UK. Doestn’t look like that much snow to me. You should juxtapose those pictures with some from the US northeast.

Sweden has highly developed snow tyres. The problem is that demand for such in the UK is insufficient to have a stock manufactured/imported. UK drivers dislike snows due to an emphasis on tire-wear and fuel mileage.
Heathrow was deadlocked for days by a 12cm snowfall. Here in Canada, like Sweden, we regard 12cm as a “dusting” or flury.
England in general is much like Tennessee/Georgia….no capacity to cope with ANY winter precipitation.
Lulled by decades of a relatively, cyclical warm period both UK drivers and Heathrow failed to invest in winter equipment.
Here in Canada, the GTA and Ontario in general resist snowtires. The main salvation for the GTA is their passion for SUVs which seem to cope somewhat without snowtires.
This guy has been hammering the Met and climatards for years with his vastly more accurate weather predictions…

Think it was WUWT where I ran into the great put down one can use for warmists claiming that cold is caused by global warming. Do you associate ice forming and growing with boiling water in a pot? That is essentially what the warmists are preaching and they are in trouble once people start believing what they see instead of what they should be seeing based on computer climate projections.

OK… So the AGW heads are saying that due to global warming Atlanta has experienced it’s first white Christmas since 1882. Uhmmm.. what was the cause of the 1882 white Christmas???
Not sure if this detail emerges from all the discussions, but the AGW lobby is now spreading the semi-myth of the “North Atlantic Drift shutdown” which (you guessed it) is due to enhanced greenhouse gases being dissolved into the ocean, yada yada. Which seems to be creating the same circulation patterns as the low-solar-activity periods of the Dalton and the Maunder minimum. Now if you are only capable of logical thought and not climate-scientist type “enhanced thought” (the kind that leads to higher taxes), then you might think, well, betcha the current quiet sun has something to do with all this.
Well you’d be right (wrong), but there’s nothing you can do about it (get out your wallet), because well, logical thought ended in 2001.

Some place today, I was reading how I’m a “denier” and here it’s something about my involvement in a “holocaust.” Well, if I’m a denier, could somebody at least tell me what it is (today) that I’m denying, and if it’s a holocaust, umm, where are all the dead people?
Or is it just a polar bear holocaust, because, umm, that’s what I would call a HUNT.
With “such random events” such as extreme winters advertised by MSM at 1 in 20 odds, one wonders WHO is making money from the misery in Europe. Scratch a progressive and find a newly appointed English snowplough company CEO?
20 to 1 odds that the next winter (well, to be kind, let’s say British winter) will be warm?
If they’re saying that they have that much confidence in their forecast, then I would love to see the MET put their money where their mouth is. If it’s warm as they predict, they get to keep their funding; if it’s another cold winter, their budget should be slashed by 95%.
Who knows, that might actually give them an incentive to look at the data – not their fudged forecasts.

I’m shocked to see so many “Believers” ( I say that because its a faith not concrete reality.) That AGW ,in the Nation that uncovered the plot to begin with still has so many faithful. They must have some hard core fanatics.
