Blog Notes

Home, home on the range. Where the deer and the antelope mock my inability to hit the broad side of a barn.
I got off a single shot at a very nice buck – and missed. Then, with the weather turning from bad to worse, it was time for Plan B – the dog show in Brandon, Manitoba. And while we may not have tagged a buck, me and Venus bagged a Best In Show ribbon!
Normal blogging will resume – at least until the weekend when the cold is expected to lift. Thanks once again to all our intrepid guest bloggers!

  1. Congratulations on the Best In Show ribbon. Better luck next time.
This last Saturday we had a bull moose tantalizing hunters driving by on Highway 12. He just stood on the field near the house and watched the vehicles going by.

  2. Kate, while I find deer kinda dear (sorry), I’m still gunning (as it were) for you. Me, here in Halifax (we’re just having the first real snowfall as I type BTW), I’d just wear electric orange if I went out into the woods; when my dad was alive, and we used to go stone tool “hunting”, we were always real careful with those vests; you have to be. I’ve heard many nasty stories. I can’t afford a gun now but I intend to get one when I can. There’s nothing wrong with killing something you’ll eat (doesn’t apply to humans, just sayin’…), and venison is great stuff. I’m butch enough to clean a dear carcass, if I can ever learn how.
Happy hunting. I bet you really are a good shot. I bet you’re a f*(&in’ surgeon with that rifle.

  3. Those little heat generator packages that you crush and they give you an hour’s heat or what ever, work quite nice inside a mitt on the trigger finger side.

  4. It’s kinda like the rodeo, sometimes the cowboy wins, sometimes the bull wins.
    Better luck next go-round.

  5. For improved target practice, I recommend you use as a target, the Liberal Red Book,(the one where they promise more gun control) at a distance of 200 yards.
Then when shooting at venison on the hoof, just imagine that Liberal Red Book sitting just behind the deer’s shoulder.
Then when you get the meat cut and wrapped just write on the outside: “Liberal roast, Liberal steak, ground Liberal, Liberal baloney, etcetera.

  6. That is alright Kate, and congratulations.
I took a small 5 pointer at 10 yards last night, but only because i messed up my “big” buck last week. They do not get big because they are dumb, but it is so easy to feel dumb when we can’t capitalize the opportunity when they make a mistake.

  7. I also should mention if it wasn’t for the pounding heart at my first crack, I was really upset at the “click” of my second shot. Looked down at the gun to see what the hell was going on and low and behold there was my magazine lying in the snow. Arghhh!

  8. A hotel in Brandon sounds very much more preferable than a blind in the cold and snowy woods.
Congrats to you and Venus, Kate! How many Best in Shows is it now?

  9. Tag soup for you and your little champion.
    Congratulations!
I’ve got two more days in NY State to fill mine.

  10. That’s one fine looking puppy.
(“gunning for” means “rooting for”, right? Stupid English language, so confusing.)

Sorry Mamba, they mean totaling opposite things.
Comon Kate, I just knew we were gona get to see that picture of a deer shoulder wrapped in bacon and stuffed with pork sausage. Hell, it’s 68 degrees down heya in Louisis-yana, the deer still have ticks on them.

  11. I totaling realized that eventually, Ratt.
You assume I was drunk, but no! Cold meds. Yowza, I think they put absinth in the stuff.

  12. You arn`t the first to miss a shot. Been skunked so far this year myself. At least you got out. A lot of people never get the chance to enjoy.
