    * Prong #3 – rinse, repeat …until Asian carp are floating tits-up all over the river surfaces
    * Prong #4 – process the dead fish as food for the homeless

    I predict this effort requiring a new tax on recreational boaters and the manufacturers of fishing rods. There will need to be an office of diversity compliance within this czar’s office and 2/3’s of that 80 million dollars will be spent on personnel and legal costs.

  14. For anyone living on or near the Great Lakes, this can become a very serious problem. These
    fish are rapacious and will kill off all the other species due to their feeding on the bottom of the aquatic food chain.
    A recent request to place screens at various places along the sanitary canal to block their migration to open waters of Lake Michigan was nixed by the EPA.

  17. How are Asian carp different from our own home grown carp,which were taking over the Manitoba lakes back in the 50’s?
    If they’re edible,open a commercial fishing season on them,that’ll control the population and create some real jobs.
    btw, Manitoba carp, hooked on a rod ‘n reel,put up a hell of a fight!

  19. Seriously doubt having a ‘czar’ is the answer but the issue is a serious one. If this species gets into the Great Lakes watershed, it’s over. It will destroy the food chain, kill the Great Lakes fishery, and basically wipe out recreational fishing (unless dodging flying carp is your idea of a fishing excursion).
    As a first step they should pour concrete in that Chicago shipping canal that connects Lake Michigan to the Mississippi watershed. Then, figure out how to address the problem south of the Great Lakes.

  22. This whole thing reminds me of paper and plastic bags. When I was young I was “urged” to use plastic bags at the super market instead of renewable paper ones “for the environment”.
    Today I’m frowned upon for using my recycled heavy-duti plastic bags that we bought over 5 years ago (3 for 99 cents) for not being “environmental”. Seriously, I’ve been approached more times than I can count on one hand to garbage my supply of 5 year old heavy-duti grocery bags and replace them with the environmentally friendly cotton ones.
    As serious as this issue is, I can;t help being cynical considering it’s admittedly the enviro-tards that caused the problem in the first place.
    Now, can we finally get to painting the icecaps and Territories black and emitting reflective particles high into the atmosphere to fight Global Warming? What could possible go wrong?

  29. Seems an opportunity here for good ‘ol N. American ingenuity. Beagle’s link suggests the fish flesh is quite nice…just a LOT of bones.
    1) macerate the whole damn fish, make fish meal and sell it to the fish farms. That HAS to be better’n stripping the oceans to supply the fish farms’ demand for fish food!
    2) machine strip the flesh off the carp and sell it as canned crab…just like it’s currently being done…at a lower cost

    FYI, the Winnipeg Goldeyes floundered this year. It was salmon’chanted evening when they last won a big game.
    I’m just glad Obama couldn’t name Edmund Muskie as Carp Czar.
    (I can’t believe all the bad puns being spawned off of this post from Kate. But it is fun to come off our high perch and engage in a little humour.)

  33. Al the fish in MB- Holy Mackeral! I’ll take the bait and bite, but if I’m herring you right, it seems to me you’re trolling for a reaction.
    I do think the US political scene is due for a tuna round come November, but just for the halibut we’ll probably see the Dems trout out some fishy program to ‘cod’dle up to the schools of bottom feeders that make up their base!

  35. Al the fish- Guess I’m a real sucker. When faced with an angle, rather than make a gaff, I usually tackle the problem, rise to the bait and take it hook, line and sinker!
    I’ve been called a largemouth bass, but I could really give a crappie!!
    But now I think the jig is up. Gotta fly.
