Tonight’s amusement en route to the Tips, the last installment of our summer series of songs about particular cities, celebrate’s Nevada’s desert city of non-stop twenty-four hour excitement, with its black jack, poker, roulette wheels, one-armed bandits and neon lights. From the 1964 movie of the same name, here’s early-Elvis impersonator Elvis Presley nonchalantly hamming his way through the conga-heavy hip-swiveller Viva Las Vegas.

Wildrose Alliance Caucus Refuses to Comply With Censorship Attempt:
“Today, the Wildrose Alliance Caucus requested that Speaker of the Legislative Assembly and PC MLA, Ken Kowalski, immediately withdraw a letter sent last week to the Wildrose Alliance Caucus by the Clerk of the Assembly, prohibiting Wildrose Alliance Caucus Leader, Danielle Smith, from being quoted in Caucus press releases.
“’Danielle Smith is the leader of our Caucus,’ said Rob Anderson, Wildrose Alliance House Leader and MLA, Airdrie-Chestermere. ‘To forbid the leader of our Caucus from being quoted in a Caucus press release because she is not yet an elected MLA is not only absurd, it is a violation of free speech rights.’
“The letter from the Clerk of the Legislative Assembly is just the latest in a string of actions by the Speaker and his support staff aimed at restricting the ability of the Wildrose Alliance Caucus to freely conduct its affairs and speak out on behalf of Albertans. These actions have included denying the Wildrose appropriate Caucus funding, censoring the speeches and articles posted to Wildrose MLA websites for allegedly being too partisan against the Government , and even forbidding the public dissemination of speeches given by Wildrose MLAs in the Legislature itself.”
“’Just as the Government is free to quote politicians from other levels of government and unelected third parties in its press releases, so too will we continue to quote Ms. Smith in our Caucus press releases,’ continued Anderson…”

The Daily Caller provides a sampling of the coverage of the Glenn Beck rally (all emph. mine):
“Conservative commentator Glenn Beck and tea party champion Sarah Palin appealed Saturday to a vast, predominantly white crowd on the National Mall to help restore traditional American values and honor Martin Luther King’s message.” — Associated Press
“Attendees at the rally Saturday largely honored organizer requests that they not bring banners or political signs. Instead, the predominantly white crowd, many seated on folding chairs and accompanied by their children, wore t-shirts with slogans including ‘Got principles?’ and ‘Restoring Honor.’” — AFP
“Beck says he and his overwhelmingly white followers ‘are the inheritors and protectors of the civil- rights movement.’” — Ben Adler, Newsweek
“Though the audience at the event was overwhelmingly white, many of the speakers were African-American, including a woman who sang a song about unity.” — Brian Montopoli, CBS
“Claiming the legacy of the nation’s Founding Fathers and repeatedly evoking civil rights activist Martin Luther King Jr., the speakers at the ‘Restoring Honor’ rally exhorted a vast and overwhelmingly white crowd to concentrate not on the history that has scarred the nation but instead on what makes it ‘good.’” — Philip Rucker & Carol Morello, Washington Post
“A relatively dense and overwhelmingly white crowd stretched from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial out past the Washington Monument.” — Mark Benjamin, Salon.com
“The speaker list was diverse, including African Americans, Latinos and Native Americans; Jews and Christians; clergymen, military veterans and sports stars, including Albert Pujols of the St. Louis Cardinals. The crowd, however, was overwhelmingly white.” — Michael A. Memoli and Kim Geiger, LA Times
“Out in the overwhelmingly white audience… politics was everywhere, with Tea Party supporters describing the damage they envision for President Barack Obama’s Democrats in upcoming midterm elections in November.” — Mitch Potter, Toronto Star

Thanks for the article. Timely reminder that in Alberta our rights have been under constant attack by the Luddites, that call themselves Conservatives.
It IS ridiculous, Revnant. I couldn’t find the quote online, but Danielle Smith pointed out in a clip on the local TV news that she – the Leader of the Wildrose party – is, in effect, the only person in the province who can’t be quoted in the Wildrose’s Caucus press releases.
In a post titled The View from Turkey, Mick Hartley quotes Claire Berlinski –
“When Western journalists note in a casual aside that press freedom has experienced certain setbacks under the AKP, they are failing to do justice to the severity of this calamity and its ramifications for Turkey and the region. The calamity is exacerbated by the tendency of the foreign media to repeat, without scrutiny, the very idiocies peddled in the Turkish press, where the range of opinion on offer has become severely limited. The result is the growth of a grossly distorted and dangerous consensus about Turkey, here and abroad — to wit, that Turkey under the AKP has become more democratic and politically healthier…”
– and then describes some of the views expressed in the Turkish Press:
“Yasin Aktay of Yeni Safak, a popular figure on the talk-show circuit, writes: ‘Israel is contrary to logic, to human rights and to democracy.’ Ali Bulaç, a columnist for Zaman, describes Gaza as ‘a concentration camp that in reality surpasses the Nazis camps’. In Ortadogu, Selcuk Duzgun warns: ‘We are surrounded. Wherever we look we see traitors. Wherever we turn we see impure, false converts. Whichever stone you turn over, there is a Jew under it. And we keep thinking to ourselves: Hitler did not do enough to these Jews.’ Abdurrahim Karakoç of Vakit adds: ‘It is impossible not to admire the foresight of Adolf Hitler…Hitler foresaw what would happen these days. He cleansed off these swindler Jews, who believe in racism for a religion and take pleasure in bathing the world in blood, because he knew that they would become a big a curse for the world…The second man with foresight is evidently Osama bin Laden…It was Hitler yesterday, and it is Osama bin Laden today.'”
The fact is, the Beck’s rally was indeed ‘overwhelmingly white’ – although there were black Americans there (including one woman who refused to be defined as ‘African-American’ saying she was an American..who is black). And many more Asians than blacks.
What is disturbing is the need of the liberal MSM to focus on this; they did not, for example, refer to Jackson’s MLK rally as ‘overwhelmingly black’.
However, this also raises the question about why blacks did not come out. No-one was stopping them. This rally was about personal, individual responsibility, humility, honour, self-reliance – all embedded in a faith not in the welfare state, the nanny govt, but in a ‘higher force’ (which some call god) that is common to all humans.
Has the liberal left, and black liberation theology (the creed of Rev Wright and Michelle Obama) and the civil rights movement, so distorted and harmed the mindset of blacks in America – by insisting that they are all members of an oppressed collective..who must ‘make the whites pay’? Has this ideology so harmed black people that they reject individual self-responsibility in favour of a reliance on Big Govt and the Nanny State?
After all, Beck’s rally was about a rejection of the reliance on Big Govt and an insistence that each and every individual had, within themselves, the capacity for reason, self-reliance and work – and that their strength came not from the state but from a humble faith that there is a higher power than man.
Is Beck’s focus on individualism so foreign to Black Liberation Theology, the Civil Rights preachings of such as Jackson etc, and Democrats?
After all, Obama insists that the people are ignorant, racist, excitable; that they are focused around immediate desires rather than long term agendas – and that they require the firm hand of govt, and, of course, Himself.
The MSM and Liberals can try to blame Beck for the absence of a vast black presence at his rally but the real causality has to be the ideological preachers of black reality – the Black Liberation Theology, the Civil Rights movement preachers, the NAACP. They have prevented black people from being free individuals.
ET says: “What is disturbing is the need of the liberal MSM to focus on this; they did not, for example, refer to Jackson’s MLK rally as ‘overwhelmingly black’.” Yes, the fact is: “Predominantly white” media portrays Beck rally as “predominantly white”

This post by ‘Bookworm’ at bookwormroom.com touches on this very subject. I’ve highlighted (italicized) the most relevant passages:
“The Tea Partiers say that they are not racist because: (a) they do not frame their ideas in terms of race; (b) they do not denigrate any race; and (c) they do not wish any race ill. As far as they are concerned, that is the end of the story. The Tea Party is not about race. It’s about using the Constitution’s emphasis on individual rights to restore America to her pre-Progressive economic and social dominance.
“The Left, however, asserts that the third statement (‘they do not wish any race ill’) is manifestly untrue, thereby putting the lie to the whole Tea Party claim that race is irrelevant and that they offer something to all Americans. What bedevils most conservatives is figuring out the logical leap that allows the Left, in the face of all contrary evidence, to claim that the Tea Partiers wish ill upon the blacks, thereby turning the Tea Party into a racist organization.
“If you put on your Leftist thinking cap, however, the answer suddenly becomes clear: The Left firmly believes that blacks can thrive only under tight government control and management. Any group that is arguing for small government is, ipso facto, trying to harm blacks.”
EBD, ET, et al:
Today I got in an argument about MSM bias with an acquaintance of mine. He’s an older gentleman, a retired journalist, who worked for many years at the Vancouver Sun and then Global TV. He adamantly denies that there’s any particular political skew amongst journalists at MSM outlets in Canada or the United States.
I was dumbfounded when he said this, absolutely dumbfounded. I don’t consider him to be a deceitful person so I can only conclude that there’s a complete lack of self-awareness amongst journalists, especially regarding their own political biases.

In addition, officials said, al Soofi was found to be carrying $7,000 in cash and a check of his luggage found a cell phone taped to a Pepto-Bismol bottle, three cell phones taped together, several watches taped together, a box cutter and three large knives. Officials said there was no indication of explosives and he and his luggage were cleared for the flight from Birmingham to Chicago O’Hare.

Robert (12:23): A few months ago Edward Michael George suggested (and I paraphrase here) that the progressive-types see themselves as *centrists* (in the Canadian case, as just ‘good Canadians’) and they see everybody to the right of them as “right-wing” and/or extreme. I think he might be right, and that this blindness/self-deception he referred to would apply doubly to those who work in the Canadian news biz, because they’re simply not exposed in their day-to-day work to truly conservative co-workers – editors, producers, reporters, etc. Canadian journalism itself, particularly broadcast journalism, is *not* a welcoming environment or, for obvious reasons, a attractive career option, for anyone who’s truly politically conservative.
As for your friend’s assertion that there isn’t any particular skew amongst journalists at MSM outlets in Canada or the United states, I strongly suggest that you refer him to the link in this recent post of Kate’s. The data speaks – loudly – for itself.

“Families from 93rd boat questioned on Christmas Island”
“IMMIGRATION officials on Christmas Island have begun questioning families from the 93rd asylum boat of the year.
The families were picked up from a small fishing vessel that rolled in light swell behind HMAS Glenelg off Christmas Island today.
The wooden boat, painted aqua in places, will be towed 10 nautical miles to the Java trench and sunk.
The Glenelg, presently stationed at Christmas Island, left Flying Fish Cove yesterday afternoon and returned at around midnight with the boat.
There were 33 asylum-seekers and two crew on board. Today they were brought ashore in three barge tips between 8.30am and 9am local time (11.30am and 12pm AEST).
An elderly woman, a baby and several toddlers were among them.”

EBD – that quote says it all; the left believes that any focus on small government is a deliberate attack on blacks (and other minorities).
But the insidious reason for this is that the left, aligned with Black Liberation Theology, the NAACP, etc, has defined blacks within a collective description rather than as free individuals. This description is that they are inadequate as individuals. That’s important. They are inadequate as individuals.
They are defined only in the collective sense as all traumatized and hapless victims who require a government to support, fund, reimburse them. They are not expected to engage in or even considered capable of, self-supporting behaviour. That’s the left view of blacks and minorities.
Notice Obama’s statement on Beck’s rally. Again, like the Cambridge Gates event, where Obama claimed to not have ‘all the facts’…Obama said that he hadn’t watched Beck’s rally. But he still gave his opinion on it. What did he say? Listen closely – he, as usual, belittled the people.
He said that in our current hard economic times, which he of course blamed on Bush (years of mismanagement of the economy), he said, (you could almost hear the patronizing sigh of understanding of the ignorant and frightened peasantry)….that it was understandable that people were, stressed as they were, afraid as they were, vulnerable as they were…prone to such a rally as Beck’s.
Then he went on to explain that people (ignorant as they are) might not understand His policies, which were not about current experiences and needs …but were geared to the future long term benefit of the people.
The peasantry, of course, living only in the present, did not understand this long term plan understood only by the wisdom of the elites in govt. So, the peasantry, emotional and frightened, went to such rallies as Beck’s.
People who are American – and who are black, must fight now, not against the old white elitism, but a new elitism of a political bent: the left – whether black or white – who consider that blacks are ‘African-Americans’, a collective, rather than American INDIVIDUALS who are black. And that they must be treated as a hapless collective requiring elite assistance rather than given the freedom as individuals.

I’d love to see someone point out on the CBC poll that the Association of Police Chiefs in Canada got a rather large donation from the same company that did the computer programming for the long gun registry (the one that took a really long time to get and cost billions more than what was estimated). Completely political – that’s what the police chiefs are.

I’m sure TSA would love to answer your questions, Annie, but right now, they’re too busy strip searching an 80 year old white grandma because…well, just because. Can’t be accused of profiling Muslims because that would upset their delicate sensibilities about such things. So we humiliate granny while thinking it’s just swell that a couple of would be terrorists can switch flights, have suspect luggage stupidly loaded on another flight, and keep it a secret from the Chicago security people that these galoots had already been pegged as a security risk in Birmingham.
Yes, but at least we’re not angering any minority group and not getting the civil liberties crowd mad at us because we share information from airport to airport. Just because someone might be a threat in Birmingham doesn’t mean they would be a threat in Chicago. That’s the thinking of the civil liberties absolutists who frown on making anyone a suspect in the first place.
