Tainted Love was a worldwide smash for English synthpop group Soft Cell. For a lot of people the song evokes mewling hairdressers in distress, or something (it’s not exactly The Ballad Of Ira Hayes, if you catch my drift) but it was actually a cover version of an older recording that had a bit of, erm, forearm to it. From 1965, here’s northern soul performer Gloria Jones singing the original – and waaay better – version of Tainted Love. Yes, yes, it all makes sense now.

Greetings from Hinton, Alberta everyone. I spent the last few days in Prince George saying goodbye to my favourite uncle. Not fun, but a small token to a great man.
Drove through Jasper today and arrived in Hinton this morning. The appearance of the community is very deceiving. Along the highway it looks like any small town with too many chain stores and ugly signs. But drive a few blocks in the residential areas and you find a rather beautiful, well kept community.
Had dinner at the Olympia Restaurant – locally run by a beautiful Greek woman. DELICIOUS food!
Back to Jasper tomorrow morning and then down to Banff / Lake Louise and over to Calgary. I hope the weather will grant me some great photos of one of Canada’s most special areas!!
SynthPop? Soft Cell ? They were punkers. I know that they are giving interviews these days calling themselves disco babies, but at the time, they were punk to us in Germany in ’81. Tainted Love came straight out of left field.

A Russian contestant died yesterday of heat in the Sauna World Championships in Heinola, Finland, a statement on the event’s website said.
A Finnish competitor was taken to hospital and the event was discontinued immediately, Ossi Arvela, head of the competition said in the statement. The contestants had been ruled fit to compete by a doctor and first aid personnel were present, Arvela said. The police are probing the death, he added.
The organizers are saddened by the event, Arvela said in the statement. The Sauna World Championships measure how long people can stay in a hot room called the sauna, where temperatures can exceed 110 degrees Celsius (230 degrees Fahrenheit).”

“The Arab countries love the Palestinians, praise them and pray for them. They just don’t want them moving permanently into their neighbourhoods. The Arab League advises Arab states to deny citizenship to Palestinians, “to avoid dissolution of their identity and protect their right to return to their homeland.” They pretend it’s a favour. It also means Arabs can hire Palestinian workers when they need them and send them home when the economy sags.”
Don’t think that the Arab states want either a Palestinian state or the Palestians in their own states. They want neither. Certainly, Israel is at fault for not going it alone, so to speak, and setting up that ‘two-headed federation’ or whatever, to move the Palestinians out of this occupied status. But don’t forget that the Arab States are heavily, thoroughly involved.
He writes: “Andrew Roberts, a much-admired British historian, raised the issue of Palestinian refugees in a speech excerpted in the National Post on Tuesday. He argued, correctly, that Arab governments “are rich enough to have economically solved the Palestinian refugee problem decades ago.” The 5,000 or so members of the Saudi royal family could probably handle it by themselves.”
I don’t think it’s even so much the case that the Arab States are maintaining a haples Palestinian population ‘against Israel’. I think it’s ‘against democracy’. Now, that’s the real fear. Democracy. Not Israel. But democracy in the Middle East. That would wipe out the power of the Saudi ‘royal’ family and all the other tribal regimes of the ME.
