  1. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has struck a Panel of Inquiry to look into the 31 of May “flotilla incident” off the coast of Israel. The panel will be chaired by former New Zealand Labor Prime Minister (served 1 year) Geoffrey Palmer and vice-chaired by outgoing President of Colombia (a wildly successful 8 years) Alvaro Uribe with another 2 positions filled by representatives from Israel and Turkey. I would expect them to find for 2 representatives for Israel’s right to defend itself, and 2 against.

  2. Thanks for the song. Because of Reader Tips, I have developed the habit of “surfing” youtube for various songs and here is a classic.
Harper Valley PTA, done with clips from the TV movie starring the ever hot Barbara Eden. Note some of the character actors.

  3. In a post at Taki’s Magazine John Derbyshire references statistics showing that Mexicans are the exception to the rule that immigrants become more upwardly mobile with each passing generation, and notes –
The lackluster average quality of the human capital we have been importing in the tens of millions from Mexico should not have come as a surprise to anyone. Mexico is a lackluster kind of country. Quite inconsequential nations—Hungary, for example, which has one-tenth Mexico’s population and one-twentieth its area—have contributed more to the sum of human civilization in a few decades than Mexico has managed in 500 years. (Questioned recently on this very point, former Mexican President Vicente Fox came up with… the taco.)”

  6. OK Farmers: Keep your dust down. The EPA is tired of eating your dust.
EPA to Crack Down on Farm Dust
OKLAHOMA CITY — The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is considering a crackdown on farm dust, so senators have signed a letter addressing their concerns on the possible regulations.
The letter dated July 23 to the EPA states, “If approved, would establish the most stringent and unparalleled regulation of dust in our nation’s history.” It further states, “We respect efforts for a clean and healthy environment, but not at the expense of common sense. These identified levels will be extremely burdensome for farmers and livestock producers to attain. Whether its livestock kicking up dust, soybeans being combined on a dry day in the fall, or driving a car down the gravel road, dust is a naturally occurring event.”

  7. ES @12:32 AM- ‘EPA to Crack Down on Farm Dust’.
No worry here- another 2 inch downpour today…no dust. None! Nada!
Just who appoints these ass-hats to a regulatory board that wields such power? They think, perhaps that grain harvesting should only be done when it’s raining? Thankfully, there’s still a few electeds who’s brains haven’t yet turned to mush.
I swear, we’re definitely circling the toilet bowl.

  8. went to coles bookstore, which is part of the chapter’s/indigo chain, and bought a few books; a nice young man at the counter asked if i’d like a bag; since i had more shopping to do, i said yes
“we’ll have to charge you five cents for it,” he said, “but at least it’s going to a good cause…the wwf.”
if heather reisman is so concerned about the environment, why doesn’t she STOP SELLING BOOKS. they’re heavy and, you know, MADE FROM PAPER

  9. “Paul Krugman Gives Up
A marvelous thing happened over on Paul Krugman’s blog at the New York Times last week. Krugman effectively conceded defeat on a range of economic debates. Who defeated him? People who posted comments on his New York Times blog. Mere commenters.
For those who do not know, Paul Krugman is one of the few who still claim that Keynesian progressivism is the answer to America’s (and Europe’s) problems, not their cause. He repeats that claim many times each month. Amid these repeated expressions of his “progressive” faith, he now also repeatedly expresses grim despair because his progressive policy prescriptions are being accepted less and less in the public square, even by the Obama administration.
Krugman is an academic. He has never run a company. He has never created a job. The closest contact he evidently ever had to “business” was as an adviser to Enron, where (in his own words) he was paid $50,000 to help build Enron’s “image.”
This, perhaps, explains the dozen or so points that Krugman makes over and over. Here are a few: Obama’s stimulus was too small. Debt is good. Austerity is bad. Deflation is coming. Ken Rogoff, Greg Mankiw, Alberto Alesina (all at Harvard), and other serious economic scientists do not understand economics as well as he does. Those who do not agree with him are “mass delusional.” And perhaps Krugman’s favorite line: “I was right, of course.”
Befitting his ideology, Krugman has only one policy to propose, regardless of topic: Transfer more resources from the discipline and dynamism of markets to the inefficiency and cronyism of government.”

  10. As previously noted on SDA, Newsweek has been pursuing a strategy of veering further to the left. Their search tag boasts: “Newsweek gets you smarter, faster about what matters most now in politics, business, environment, tech, culture, world, and health ideas, news, and trends.”
As NYT reports, “The magazine’s top editors and managers redesigned it last year in hopes of attracting more readers and advertisers. But the new product, with more commentary and analysis on the news of the week, failed to catch on.”
    It sold for $1.

  11. I’m beginning to hear more about the abuse of forfeiture in the US. A guy that has his truck seized on a test drive but not paied for. An old lady that lawyers and judges pissed away over a million of her money to ‘look’ after her and settle when she is broke. This one though takes it for me. A druggie runs through the house, drops a bag and the police take her house.

  12. This column covers the failure of airport personnel to check muslims wearing the burka. Why do we continue to allow these people to dictate to us on what they will or wont do?
    http://www.torontosun.com/news/canada/2010/08/02/14901016.html
Wrote this letter to the Toronto Sun.
“Almost 100% of airline security incidents, like bombings, are caused by Muslims and we spend billions in money, time and inconvenience to passengers trying to control this threat. Time and again we read as in the cases of the shoe bomber and the underwear bomber that rigid security guidelines are ignored and the threat is only thwarted through the action of the passengers, like Mike Flynn, and airline crew. Here we have another security breach where Muslim women, wearing a full veil, are allowed, unchallenged, to board aircraft contrary to security statutes. The security personnel bleat we are only paid $14 an hour and we can’t force these women to raise their veil to see their faces despite the fact that a Somalia murderer of a police officer fled the UK wearing his sister’s burka with her passport and a veiled Muslim woman blew up a Russian aircraft. If you can’t do your job then what are you there for! Isn’t the fact that aggressive Muslim males intimidate the personnel into not checking the hidden faces another red flag of warning? As stated by Muslim imams covering a woman’s face is not required in Islam so why are not everyone involved with processing passengers demanding these women drop the veils so they can be plainly seen? No special room, no demanding only females look at them, no special dispensation, either they openly show their face at each step of the process or they are refused aircraft travel, full stop!”

  13. Maz, thank you SO MUCH for posting the article about Paul Krugman. I’ve long been suspicious about the intelligence of his views. He has been the Poster Boy for Leftist Economics for some time now. And finally, FINALLY all of his theories have been proven to be ABSOLUTE FAILURES!!!
Many comments were cited in the piece but my absolute favourite comes from a Leftist supporter of Krugman. It reads:
“Who is this Sean from Florida? He takes everything that [the] Professor [says] and shreds it, piece by piece. He shouldn’t be allowed to post his comments on this blog since he seems to be winning all the debates. We progressives need to stick together and embellish our talking points without someone from the outside pointing out fallacies in our ideology.”
Now, of course, this might have been written tongue-in-cheek. Either way, what has been clear for some time is that Leftist economic policies are complete failures. They’re based entirely on Hope rather than Facts & Logic and Common Sense. And once they’re exposed as the failures they are, all Leftists want to do is shut up their critics rather than adjust their own thinking. Yet they have the audacity to keep calling themselves “Progressives”. That’s beyond sad.

“Argentina Colder Than Antarctica Raises Power Imports
Argentina is importing record amounts of energy as the coldest winter in 40 years drives up demand and causes natural-gas shortages, prompting Dow Chemical Co. and steelmaker Siderar SAIC to scale back production.
Electricity supplied from Brazil and Paraguay rose to a daily combined record of about 1,000 megawatts on July 12, while consumption peaked at 20,396 megawatts three days later, according to Buenos Aires-based energy broker Cammesa. Shipments of liquefied natural gas are set to double this year.”

“Hot Enough For Ya?” Well, July Was NOT Hot Enough to Set Records!
July may have been hot enough for YOU, but it was NOT hot enough for Environment Canada (not hot enough to set any records, anyway).
Meteorologist Peter Kimbell says we had a mean-temperature of 23-point-1 at the airport for the month of July, but that was beaten by a 23-point-6 reading in 1955.
He adds the Experimental Farm site has records going back to 1889, and they recorded a temperature of 24-point-9 in 1921.
Kimbell isn’t saying July wasn’t hot…it certainly was.
    There have just been hotter…”

  17. Did anyone else catch the Leftist academic, Edward Luce, on Charles Adler’s show today? Luce recently wrote this. I agree with him in his diagnosis of the symptoms in Middle Class America. But I completely disagree with his sentiments that the solution to America’s problems is follow Obama’s path of turning the country into yet another socialist mecca.
One factor all such Leftists consistently ignore is the one of “incentive” (aka motivation). They have convinced themselves that if the government gives the people more & more & more that this will in no way destroy the motivation of the average man to strive for more. Adler never challenged him once about this. 🙁
