It’s Sunday night, time to straighten up and fly right in preparation for the arrival of Arkansas’ own electric guitar-playing Sanctified gospel powerhouse singer Sister Rosetta Tharpe, who was “one of gospel music’s first superstars (and) the first gospel performer to record for a major record label.” From an undated ’60s television appearance, here she is performing Up Above My Head.

  1. Excerpt of a Guardian review of a British TV documentary series that brought five Amish teens to the UK and filmed the crazy hijinks:
    “For the first episode, they’re whisked to south London to hang around with a group of street dancers and the occasional ex-gang member. The Amish kids stand out a little in the hood, with their olde-worlde hats and stiff religious backgrounds. And that’s the point.
    “The results are predictably amusing, but in unpredictable ways. Rather than recoiling in horror at the godless lifestyles on display, the Amish kids are largely perplexed and a touch disappointed. For instance, when the London lads sit around indoors playing videogames, their Amish counterparts quickly grow unbelievably bored. Why? Because they’d rather be outside in the barn, fixing tools and carrying out chores. ‘But there is no barn,’ they sigh.
    “In one excruciating sequence, the street-dance crew perform their act – a full-blown Britain’s Got Talent number – for the benefit of the Amish, who stare at them with expressions of blank disinterest; not even unimpressed, they’re merely confused as to why they’ve bothered. It’s the best critique of street dance I’ve ever seen.”

    “The Obama administration, already under fire for unprecedented allegations of racial bias, faces a new bias claim from a most unlikely source: one of the administration’s own inspectors general.
    “Decisions on which car dealerships to close as part of the auto industry bailout — closures the Obama administration forced on General Motors and Chrysler — were based in part on race and gender, according to a report by Troubled Asset Relief Program Special Inspector General Neal M. Barofsky.

    Dealerships were retained because they were recently appointed, were key wholesale parts dealers, or were minority- or woman-owned dealerships.

    “Thus, to meet numbers forced on them by the Obama administration, General Motors and Chrysler were forced to shutter other, potentially more viable, dealerships. The livelihood of potentially tens of thousands of families was thus eliminated simply because their dealerships were not minority- or woman-owned.”

    Two related things come to mind. One is the title “Altruism as Appeasement” from one of Ayn Rand’s essays. The other is the notion that if you can get people to constantly feel unearned guilt, you’ve got them where you want them. And this can easily happen to those suckers who try to follow the evil altruist moral code.
