One of the very best ways for people who aren’t very familiar with jazz to begin to get a handle on the pleasures of the music is to listen to a great improviser playfully mining the tonal and rhythmic possibilities of a familiar melody. With that in mind, here’s the great Thelonious Monk exploring and expanding on Vincent Youmans‘ and Irving Caesar’s 1925 composition Tea For Two.

“He was charged Monday with assault, forcible confinement and four counts of uttering threats.”

Question of the Day ………………… which member of the Israeli government will Obama insult on Tuesday of this coming week week? Just PM Natenyahu or the entire democratically and freely elected Israeli Cabinet? Or perhaps a better question would be “How long will it take Obama to insult Israel at the White House on Tuesday”?

The Jazz Baroness the love story of Nica Rothschild and Thelonious Monk.
The Jazz Baroness is a HBO documentary about the enduring relationship between a beautiful heiress and jazz legend Thelonious Monk that debuts November 25 exclusively on HBO2. The Jazz Baroness tells the moving love story of Pannonica Rothschild (“Nica” for short) and pianist-composer Thelonious Monk. Directed by Nica’s great-niece Hannah Rothschild, the documentary features the voice of Oscar® winner Helen Mirren, who reads Nica?s words.
My wife and I have seen it twice, having PVRed it. Beautifully done, we thought.
Yes MikeP, It is yes sir/no sir all the way at any border crossing. I in the past tried to be friendly to border inspection people in Canada, Australia and the U S and found yes sir/ no sir to be the best policy. The Canadian guy gave me the most grief and a nice personal search for what I thought to be a light comment made in jest lol.
The Canadian on tape there was asking for a very close search with his attitude. Do not question them. They all have a tough job I would not want to do and fully understand where the guards are coming from.
Haven’t seen it, Me No Dhimmi, but I’m familiar with the ‘Baroness’ from the documentary Straight No Chaser. I remember how Monk’s wife appreciated Rothschild for taking him off her hands once in a while. He was a brilliantly odd fellow.
Apropos of Kate’s post about the Kinderladen movement in Germany, here’s a US-style blast from the past:
“In 1994, (US Surgeon General Joycelyn Elders) became a lightning rod for criticism after she said schools should consider teaching masturbation to students.”
Less controversial were her recommendations that schools should teach breathing and eating…
I kept waiting for the inevitable Sousa march, but since it never appeared, may I present instead (for your delectation) E. E. Begley’s National Emblem to commemorate 4 July:

You could think of it as variations on a noted drinking song.

>>> “emails caused a furore in November after they were hacked into and published online.”
The CRU e-mails were not hacked; a still-unknown CRU insider/whistleblower published the e-mails online.

“‘Climategate’ was ‘a game-changer’ in science reporting, say climatologists
After the hacked emails scandal scientists became ‘more upfront, open and explicit about their uncertainties’
Science has been changed forever by the so-called “climategate” saga, leading researchers have said ahead of publication of an inquiry into the affair – and mostly it has been changed for the better.
This Wednesday sees the publication of the Muir Russell report into the conduct of scientists from the University of East Anglia’s Climatic Research Unit (CRU), whose emails caused a furore in November after they were hacked into and published online.
Critics say the emails reveal evasion of freedom of information law, secret deals done during the writing of reports for the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), a cover-up of uncertainties in key research findings and the misuse of scientific peer review to silence critics.
But whatever Sir Muir Russell, the chairman of the Judicial Appointments Board for Scotland, concludes on these charges, senior climate scientists say their world has been dramatically changed by the affair.
“The release of the emails was a turning point, a game-changer,” said Mike Hulme, professor of climate change at the University of East Anglia. “The community has been brought up short by the row over their science. Already there is a new tone. Researchers are more upfront, open and explicit about their uncertainties, for instance.”
And there will be other changes, said Hulme. The emails made him reflect how “astonishing” it was that it had been left to individual researchers to police access to the archive of global temperature data collected over the past 160 years. “The primary data should have been properly curated as an archive open to all.” He believes that will now happen.”

In the too bizarre to be true department, I tuned into CPAC for a wee bit to hear Canada’s #1 CSIS spy, Robert Fadden’s testimony at the Committee for Public Safety and National Security. What I saw was the most ironic display of political arrogance and indignation that could be imagined.
First the NDP Chair of the committee went on a rant that by suggesting that some provincial and municipal politicians might be acting in a “compromising” way with regards to foreign influence, Mr Fadden was besmirching the reputation of all politicians. He even threw in the race card, implying all Chinese Canadians were offended.
Then a tag team from the bloc were asking for Fadden’s resignation because he suggested that some people being looked into (for the foreign influences) might not have loyalties to Canada and therefore are treasonous and should have been dealt with. The Bloc telling CSIS that those who are not loyal to Canada are traitors: Priceless.
And all this as so called “Canadians” are under arrest in the US as Soviet spies.
Maybe “more basketball courts” is not the answer.Perhaps tougher juvenile courts should be given a try.

Cross-posted at Blue Like You (with one comment on this issue still caught in the SDA filter … or deleted):
I’m still trying to fathom why Fadden gave the CBC exclusive access to CSIS information and capitulated to Brian Stewart’s (in his words) “wild notion that they [CSIS] might allow CBC to have an ‘inside look’ at their world as part of a special hosted by Peter Mansbridge” ((http://www.cbc.ca/canada/story/2010/06/24/f-vp-stewart.html#ixzz0spPkvhjZ).
Can anyone explain WHY Fadden spoke to the Royal Canadian Military Institution in the spring about sensitive matters that, he admits, he hadn’t shared with the CPC Minister responsible?
I can see how the Opposition is desperately trying to tie Faddens’ indiscretions to the CPC and PMSH — in fact Prime Minister Harper, it seems to me, as per usual with the Opposition and the media, is damned if he does, damned if he doesn’t — and I can’t see how Fadden has helped the situation.
Can someone explain where Fadden’s loyalties lie, as I’m confused.
Has some great historical merit. Warning is religious.

My letter to the CBC ombudsman. Have fun with it.
Re. “Some Palestinian kids malnourished: Lancet”,

Mr Carlin,
I write this letter to register a complaint about the ww.cbc.ca news item cited above. This article, redacted by CBC News staffer, not by a press agency, is blatantly politically biased and must be corrected.
The title, “Some Palestinian kids malnourished: Lancet”, is an inaccurate representation of the data that shows there are seven times more overweight than underweight children in the Palestinian territories. The article starts with “About one in four Palestinian children goes without breakfast, say researchers who found many had stunted growth or were malnourished.” The rest of the article describes, without any attempt at objectivity or perspective, a state of nutrition that is in fact unremarkable, even by Western standards.
The stated rate of obesity among Palestinian children, 15%, is similar to the Canadian rate of 18% (Canadian Community Health Survey, 2004, Statistics Canada). The stated rate of underweight children, 2%, is comparable to the U.S. rate of 1% (data not available for Canada) and better than all other Middle Eastern countries. For comparison, here are a few rates of underweight children (http://hdrstats.undp.org/en/indicators/101.html
This article is based on a short publication (an abstract) written by Palestinian doctors and published (online only, registered users only) by a British medical journal; how did the CBC learn about this small, technical publication? The text of the original abstract (attached to this email) is less negative, more factual than the text from CBC staffers. Who wrote this text? Why this title? Why this degree of publicity and this negative spin on such an obscure non-story?
There can be only one explanation: CBC staffers and editors are using my taxes to promote a political agenda and are willing to violate the principles of journalistic fairness, accuracy and integrity to achieve this end.
With this letter, I want to register my protest against what I see as a blatant political bias by CBC staffers. This article violates the CBC’s own journalistic standards and the 1991 Broadcasting Act. I also ask your help to obtain a public retraction of this shameful piece of propaganda, replacing it with a more accurate portrait of the state of children nutrition in the Palestinian territories and other Middle Eastern countries.
…., NB
Well written and well researched, Many. It perfectly highlights the CBC’s abominable abuse of “facts” en route to promoting the Palestinian narrative. Let us know if you get a response from the ombudsman.
Manny, the Lancet you refer to ,is also the medical journal that came up with the “millions” dead in Iraq. The author of that piece of bumf could not verify his research. However, the damage was done,as this lie is repeated over and over by those who regard anything else as ‘propaganda’.
Britain used to be a respected country.Nowadays,we sit and watch,as they are slowly conquered from within. It is a pity.
This is interesting. I went to the link Manny provided and putzed around for a bit. There is a page where you can compare country’s development alphabetically. http://hdr.undp.org/en/countries/alphabetical/
One of the keys to development is the overall treatment of women. Some countries, such as Mexico, have this information on their page, others (lots of others),do not. I will go out on a limb here and guess that the countries which do not have this info listed also share at least one other common ‘theme’.
Re: Fadden, basically, he was letting the Canadian public know that this stuff is going on in the spy vs spy world. As you can see, the Canadian ego cannot fathom that the real world and all it’s mystery and intrigue can be found in happy Canada. Same group that thinks Canadian soldiers should be wearing blue berets and being nice to everyone.
The information Fadden divulged wasn’t anything classified but a wake-up call much like police when they let people know that there are scam artists operating in the area. It’s the “I know, type of you know” thing.
Correction to my 8 p.m. post. There are some islamic states where the gender disparity is rated. They don’t do very well, but it is there. If I offended any supporters of Islam, too bad, your treatment of women offends everyone else.
