Reader Tips

I’m going to kick off tonight’s Reader Tips thread with a video of recent speech delivered by the United States’ new top commander in Afghanistan, Gen. David Petraeus, honouring the brave men and women who have served in uniform over the years.
Excerpt:

They form an unbroken chain of heroes, who generation after generation have answered the call to serve, a long purple line characterized by courage, commitment and sacrifice. All of them know personally and deeply the terrible grind of constant combat. They persevered through long hard days of fighting, enduring crushing heat and withering cold; they suffered through the loss of their comrades in arms, the brother and sisters alongside whom they fought day after day and night after night, and they experienced what it is to lie in pain in a foxhole, atop a ridge, along a city street, bruised, bleeding, or broken as a result of their service to our country. So to all those who have demonstrated the courage, and made the sacrifice that the purple heart signifies, and to the families who supported them along the way, thank you – thank you – for what you did for our country, as you earned the badge of honour that is sought by none, but is respected by all.

You can see the integrity in the man’s face as he speaks. Here’s US General David Petraeus Honoring Purple Heart Veterans.
The comments are open for your Reader Tips.

  1. If someone other than Obama was in power, this demand would be laughable:
“North Korea has demanded $65 trillion as compensation from the United States for six decades of hostilities it is accused of perpetrating on the communist country…”

  2. Congresswoman: Hezbollah joining Mexican drug cartels
Sue Myrick demands Homeland Security probe of terror group’s presence on US-Mexican border
North Carolina Congresswoman Sue Myrick warned Friday that Hezbollah may be colluding with drug cartels on the US-Mexican border, and called on Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano to investigate the matter.

  3. There’s an interesting reportin the Telegraph (UK) about crime and race. 12 percent of Londoners are black, but blacks commit 59 percent of robberies and are responsible for 67 percent of gun crimes.
Two individuals with contrasting reactions are quoted in the article: Shaun Bailey, a black politician, said “The black community has to look at itself and say that, at the end of the day, these figures suggest we are heavily – not casually – involved in violent crime. We are also involved in crime against ourselves – and we regularly attack each other.”
Richard Garside of the Centre for Crime and Justice Studies (sounds like he’s probably white) said, “Given Britain’s long history of racism and imperialism it should not greatly surprise us that black and minority ethnic groups are disproportionately members of social classes that have tended to experience greater victimisation and to be the subject of police attention. Just because the police treat black men as more criminal than white men, it does not mean that they are.”
How contentious that last sentence is: “…treat black men as more criminal than white men.” Is Garside suggesting that the police turn a blind eye to gun crimes committed by whites, or that they regularly arrest black men for non-existent gun crimes, or….?

the highly sophisticated philosopher, professor of humanities and media. Got to admit that the professor is actually, admirably is a wise woman. Sometimes though she sets on these journeys of intellectual superiority over the middle class that the lady knows very little and nothing about.
….. in the 19th century…. As respectability became the central middle-class value…. Victorian prudery ended the humorous sexual candor….
    How so?
…. New Age movement…. ideological view of gender as a social construct….
    True of the upwardly mobile.
…. men and women are interchangeable…. voices are lowered and gestures curtailed…. Men must neuter themselves. ….
    True in office space.
…. not in this culture driven and drained by middle-class values….
Could this be so? Don’t recognize the wind. What exactly are the middle-class values?
Apparently the professor does not know that a man’s brain, regardless of monetary divisions, is occupied by sex most of the hours being conscious & awake and who knows how much while sleeping.

  5. i’m probably more left-leaning than the average poster here, but i assure you that i lean way to the right of most of the people i associate with daily. i’m a toronto boy crestfallen with how terribly G20 went.
i just want to post a link to an article from an unlikely source that as far as i can tell really places you in the mess and tells the story honestly and without an agenda.

Day 69 of the “eye” and “a massive oil leak,”.

“Oil falls toward $78 as traders eye Gulf storm
SINGAPORE — Oil prices dropped slightly to near $78 a barrel Monday in Asia as traders kept a close eye on damage a possible hurricane could cause rigs in the Gulf of Mexico this week.
Benchmark crude for August delivery was down 25 cents to $78.61 a barrel at late afternoon Singapore time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract added $2.35 to settle at $78.86 on Friday.
Tropical depression Alex, which has pounded parts of Mexico and Central America, is expected to regain strength in the coming days as it moves over warmer waters in the Gulf and possibly become a hurricane heading toward Mexico’s Caribbean coast, the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said Saturday.
The storm will likely strike well away from the area where BP is trying to stop a massive oil leak, the center said.
“The lack of follow through from the bulls or the bears is understandable, hurricane activity in the Gulf Coast remains unknown,” energy consultant The Schork Group said in a report.
Hurricane activity is one of the wild cards analysts are mulling at they try to predict oil prices for the rest of the year.”

  9. You know the Tea Party is winning when arch nemesis Barry-o the great Narcississy declared on Canadian soil that deficit slashing is coming and “it won’t be popular”…Of course, all depending where these cuts will come from but I suspect they have to come in large part from his own supporter base: Fed agencies and bureaucrats, special interest groups on the social justice dole etc…This is a complete 180 degree turn for Barry. Harper’s adopted recipe is in the Tea party’s cookbook!…And the world just left Canada with a copy!
Barry-o, I’m sipping my cup of Palin tea and laughing in your general direction.
    ———————————————
Here in Canada, with Harper’s stellar performance on the world stage, the next election MAJORITY seats is his to loose.
And slashing wise, I’m with eastern paul: As long as the CBC is on the block…Or is it “bloc”, like “black Bloc”?
You should see their faces, the nervousness is palatable at the Communist Broadcasting Corpse.

  10. Ernunnos:
People who think that open borders are the solution to Mexican poverty are exactly like the people who thought that more home ownership will make better Americans. They confused cause and effect. Home ownership is not the cause of more responsible, more engaged citizens, it’s the effect. Crossing the border isn’t the cause of wealth and freedom, the border exists to be crossed because of a difference in wealth and freedom. Give irresponsible people mortgages and they’ll just be irresponsible people with debt they can’t pay. Bring people from a corrupt and impoverished state to a relatively healthy and wealthy state, and they’ll just bring their own dysfunctions with them.”

“MSM Can’t Bring Itself to Mention Robert Byrd’s KKK Past…”
“I shall never fight in the armed forces with a Negro by my side… Rather I should die a thousand times, and see Old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds.
    — Robert C. Byrd, in a letter to Sen. Theodore Bilbo (D-MS), 1944”
“(Newsbusters)- When Republican Sen. Strom Thurmond died, the MSM was quick to stress his segregationist past. The New York Times ran the headline “Strom Thurmond, Foe of Integration, Dies at 100,” leaving readers to imagine the South Carolinian had remained an advocate of segregation. The very first line of USA Today’s story described Thurmond as “the nation’s most prominent segregationist.”
Strange how the MSM can suddenly become reticent about mentioning someone’s segregationist past when the late politician in question is a Democrat. On Morning Joe today, Mark Halperin and Mike Barnicle used elliptical language worthy of a State Department dispatch to avoid mentioning that Byrd had been a member and leader of the Ku Klux Klan.
In the opening paragraph of this blog item, the NY Times’ headline on the death of Strom Thurmond was noted: “Strom Thurmond, Foe of Integration, Dies at 100“.
The Grey Lady’s headline today? Robert Byrd, Respected Voice of the Senate, Dies at 92”

“Gaza gunmen ‘set fire to UN summer camp for children’
Masked gunmen in the Gaza Strip have set fire to a United Nations-run summer camp for children.
This follows a similar attack in May on another UN-run summer camp.
Some militants view the UN as a symbol of the West and claim that the summer camps allow boys and girls to mix freely – something that the UN denies.
The attackers tied up the guard at the camp in central Gaza before setting fire to chairs, tables, easels and other equipment.
The UN says about 25 armed men attacked the beach camp in the middle of Sunday night.”
