Doesn’t sound like gun control is the problem here. Sounds like the girl had REALLY bad taste in men.
It would have been cheaper and easier for him to buy a handgun off of the street. It takes about 3 months to get all licenced up and then to obtain a restricted firearm. And its freakking expensive (however if Iggy has his way, “free licences for all Canadians! Get yours now.”
Anyway we all know illegal handguns don’t work. Neither do knives or bats or that last person I saw in my ER who was murdered by a car.
I cannot stand these stupid banners. Ban everything mentality.
(For those of you who are not familiar with gun laws let me point some of the rules out so you can argue with a Anti-gun nut:
a) I had to get a restricted license which took a couple hundred dollars and a weekend course. It also included a police background check, and two references which they phoned and asked about me. My spouse also had to talk to them.
b) If I want to use a restricted firearm I have to take it to a licenced range. I have to obtain a Authorization to Transport form which allows me to travel back and forth to the range only. (becaue we all know that criminals obey these forms).
c) to store them I need a container which is locked and almost impossible to break into unless you have a locksmith and a ton of TNT. (this is the only storage method I think is legal based on previous court cases).
If I so much as venture into the living room with my firearm and someone sees me I could be charged with unsafe storage or illegal carry or endangering the public.
Every now and then when you buy a gun they randomly call your spouse to ask them if it is okay.)
Honestly I don’t mind licencing. Its appropriate and if my spouse has any concerns she can phone the RCMP. What I am against is being labelled a criminal, or like I have some innate criminal intent. Especially when our neighbours down south can carry a concealed gun and their own National Academy of Science states that there is no evidence it causes further harm, and there are no clint eastwood style OK corral shootings going on between registered conceal and carry permit holders.
Gee. The Star’s comments section isn’t activated. Isn’t that “unexpected”.
Especially when our neighbours down south can carry a concealed gun and their own National Academy of Science states that there is no evidence it causes further harm…

In fact, langmann, in U.S. jurisdictions that have conceal-carry laws, studies demonstrate ~lower~ rates of violent crime.
This is the usual purple prose from huge Wendy Cukier supporter Beverly Ackerman. Beverly decided a couple or three years ago to become Montreal’s voice of gun control, emulating her soul sister, Miss Wendy. The same old cliches are there as before – she got her ass handed to her before, and she will yet again. She is is thicker’n wet cement left too long in the sun, has an agenda regardless of what you say, and of course, the Prime Fossil, the Star, just eats her up. Dumb and dumber.
Given the recent ‘machete incident’ in Canada, maybe we should have a machete registry… sarc off/
Unfortunately, it would be a little late for the Rwandans.
Or perhaps we should have a taser registry as well…
The weapon of choice is not the problem, the stability of the person holding the weapon is another matter entirely.

One line in the article reads …
In a letter to Harper, Passa wonders why we permit so many guns in our society since we no longer hunt for food.
To be honest, I’ve wondered something similar from time to time in the past, but have since decided (until otherwise convinced) that it is the wrong way of looking at it. I presently see it as a necessary check in a democracy. My rationale is as follows …
After an election, there are two possible outcomes–the results are upheld, or they are not.
For the moment, let us assume they are upheld, then the next question is do the people have both the will and means to enforce the election results? If yes, the system is healthy and working. If not, then the system, though presently functional is waiting to fail–it is sick. That is there is NOTHING preventing the state or its agents from unilaterally deciding to not abide by the results.
What if they are not upheld? Again, the next question is do the people have both the means and will to enforce it? If not, the election/system was a sham/farce. If so, the system should enter a corrective stage to fix that.
Guns, as I see them fall under the ‘means’ category.
“The source of violence is not poverty. It is not gender. It is not race. It is not lack of education. It is not society. It is self-interest. And on this front, the self-proclaimed pacifists are no less violent than those who use physical violence… they just use different methodologies and tactics.” – Marc MacYoung
“All too often the subject of criminal and dangerous behavior — especially the aftermath — is muddled up with ideology, rhetoric and even politics. Often the actions of the criminal and violent person is explained away as a result of injustice, oppression or societal failure. However, by looking at crime and violence from the perspective of extreme selfishness and lack of concern for others, you begin to see more of the ‘charging lion’ nature of the subject.
And make no mistake, that criminal coming at you is like a charging lion … intent on eating you alive.
It’s All About The Criminal
If criminals had a theme song it would be the chorus from “It’s all about me!” While everyone is to some degree or the other selfish, criminals, violent and angry people take it to extremes.”

“In a letter to Harper, Passa wonders why we permit so many guns in our society since we no longer hunt for food.”
However if our food supply is ever interrupted as it might if there is a sudden crash and oil prices skyrocket or if there some sort of catastrophe like an earthquake a war in the Middle East or a civil war in the USA (which is not out of the question … or if our government instituted marshal law … well .. some of us might need to get our own food for awhile.
Or maybe we just like to know that if some very bad people break into our homes during some sort of big event, we have something more than pissing our pants to offer up in protection of our families.
Or maybe we just like to target shoot.
And we must never forget this tidbit
“In fact, langmann, in U.S. jurisdictions that have conceal-carry laws, studies demonstrate ~lower~ rates of violent crime.”
Yeah, nothing like the possibility of an armed victim to make a cowardly mugger, robber, burglar, etc. think twice. They’re “bottom feeders”, going after quick, easy AND defenseless victims.
It’s a long story from decades ago, but I’m almost 100% certain that an acquaintance of my then-house co-renter, a burglar and general scumbag, didn’t burglarize our house because he knew I owned a handgun, had been trained by the US Air Force on handgun use, and was ready to use it if necessary. The scumbag did burglarize someone else in the neighborhood, a “progressive” that he knew didn’t have one of those oh-so-evil handguns. Scumbag caught by the police but the “progressive” never got his stereo, cameras, etc. back, as scumbag had already sold them to a fence.
BTW, if anyone wants to go out to the NRA website (nra dot org), there’s a section there of stories of people who successfully defended themselves, others, their property with handguns. Often this was done without even having to fire a shot. Other times, there were dead perps. Or perps with bullet holes arrested and subsequently off to prison.
I feel sorry for the mother but she is a nitwit.
Would she prefer that the boyfriend had used a
big knife or an axe to hack her daughter to death?
This is a tired subject,,,
The tired arguments that handguns are offensive…designed only to kill….ad nauseum.
Then the equally irrelevances such as hunting and target shooting manifest…..
Basic issue to Police Globally is a handgun….not because it is so effective but because it is easily carried. Much like the military utilizes handguns in a defensive role. That is the role of a handgun….When Police show up to do serious shooting—-they bring rifles, shotguns….
Availability of firearms in North America has little influence on homocide or suicide rates.
Stabbing, strangling, poisoning bludgeoning and using a vehicle are widely utilized.
The key issues are:
1) Politicians are resentful of the futility of tyranical marshall law….this is the reason for the US Constitution’s Second Amendment. This was proven by correspondence between the framers of that ammendment….prior to telephones these folk engaged in signifigant correspondence and their motives are beyond question.
2) The very principle of self defence is anethema to the gun-grabbers. Any means of self defence is repugnant….it is styled as “taking the law into your own hands”.
Simple…..
Any arguments such as it being a gender issue, a class issue, a rural vs urban issue are just sophistry.
In fact—the common factor involved in Columbine, Ecole De Politecnique, Illinos University, Davis, Virginia Tech is not a shooter and homocides but the fact these are designated “gun free zones.”
In the recent past, Detroit was noted for it’s high homocide rates…then Michigan became a “shall carry state”…licenced concealed carry….although Detroit authorities defiantly refused to issue CC permits….any Michigan CC permit is valid in Detroit. Due to the racial demographics of Detroit it is generally assume than Caucasians are from “outa town”, hence likely armed and the criminals not only do not take knives to gun-fights—they avoid gun-fights and seek unarmed victims…..the result is Detroit’s homocide rate declined.
The sad reality is that the deterant effect of armed citizens is effective in suppressing confrontational crime.
My motto is:
It is better to be judged by 12 than to be carried by 6.
So tell me, how did the criminal get the handgun after filling out the form ?. Were there not a few other hoops he had to jump through, as described by Langmann above ? The murder of this girl is tragedy enough, the deliberate omission of the other requirements make this a polemic unworthy of notice.
I agree that handguns are and should be viewed as defensive weapons.
Why are so many Canadians comfortable with police carrying handguns, but think that there can be no legitimate reason for a law-abiding citizen to possess one? Does 24 weeks of training turn ordinary men into angels? And somehow these folks have deluded themselves into believing that the only protection they need in the face of a violent attack is a phone or an alarm system and armies of ‘grief counsellors’ for their survivors.
I have to write this anonymously for obvious reasons. I do not currently own, possess,or have access to a gun. I applied for a license way back when they first came out.I put my real name ,address, etc. down on the form and answered all the questions truthfully. But,I gave as references, Paul Martin and Jean Chretien. I supplied the information to contact these gentlemen, which was my own, hoping to have some gov’t weenie call me and ask for one or both of the above. No one called. I was issued the license…Fast forward a couple of years. I got into a bit of trouble(I was framed, framed I tell you),and one of my release conditions was a total firearm restriction. Didn’t matter squat to me,however when I was 8 months into my bail, I received a free extension to my license. That folks is how well this system works….BTW,just one turn of the wheel separates a law-abiding citizen from being a hero who just wiped out a pack of fools celebrating _____.
“In a letter to Harper, Passa wonders why we permit so many guns in our society since we no longer hunt for food.”
Maybe not in the big cities,Ma’am, but we sure DO hunt for food out here in the rest of Canada. The Whitetail buck I got last Fall very nicely complemented our dinner table.
Many country folk on low incomes also really need the meat, and here in B.C. with all the small town mill shutdowns, wild game is a real help to the family budget.
This story is a terrible tragedy, and one has to ask about the role of the local PD’s Firearms Officer. Did anyone contact the applicant’s references?
When my FAC expired a couple of years ago and I had to apply for a PAL, just for long guns, my references were checked by phone.
With so many young people’s Hollywood idea of firearms use, every applicant for a handgun should be checked out under current laws.
I was going to apply for a “restricted” permit, but it isn’t worth the trouble or cost, especially when you can’t carry the weapon when you go hiking in the cougar country around here. I’ll buy a “Defender” instead.
Abe,
Don’t forget that people still do hunt for food today. The article seems to imply that because hunting doesn’t occur in the center of the universe (aka Toronto) it must not be happening anywhere else.
“In a letter to Harper, (Brenda) Passa wonders why we permit so many guns in our society since we no longer hunt for food. She can’t understand why in her province an 18-year-old isn’t considered mature enough to legally buy a case of beer but is deemed capable of owning a handgun.
Brenda Passa said:”Times have changed: “Being 18 in 1930 is not like being 18 in 2010. Children live with their parents longer; they are younger emotionally and need time to develop before dangerous weapons” are made available.”
—————————–
Is that so Mrs.Brenda Passa?
It’s funny because when I was 18 years old,the Canadian Government entrusted me and trained me with Rifles,Machinguns,Sub-machineguns,Hand Grenades and other types of Explosive Ordnance.
The government thought I was “mature” enough for that, but then again, that was before DECADES of Canadian Left-Liberal stupidity ran it’s course.
Like Beverly Akerman, I too have child who wasn’t shot at Dawson College. That makes me an expert in firearms and firearms policy, and I say more guns equals less crime.
I think that if the victim had been allowed by law to carry the most effective means of protection available, a handgun, her coward ex would have been too afraid to do anything.
I think the day will come where we can have an honest conversation with our politicians about concealed carry in Canada. If it happens it will probably happen at the provincial government level. Canada already has the legal framework within the Criminal Code to allow for licensing of individuals to carry permits and gives the authority to each province’s chief firearms officer. And each province or territory has a bureaucrat sitting in a government building whose job it is every day to deny permits to anyone who applies (except armoured car employees–we somehow place greater value in protecting money than people).
I’m thinking that government might be the Wildrose Alliance. I was hoping it would be the Sask Party.
anon has already made the point I was about to make — if kids are so immature nowadays, why are 16 year olds allowed to drive vehicles on their own? Vehicles are far more dangerous than firearms and make the perfect murder weapon as one can always use the uncontrolled acceleration defense. I started shooting at age 8 and saved up to buy my own .22 at 14. That was from the Bay in Calgary and no-one gave a second glance at a 14 year old with a rifle back then and the crime rate seemed to be very low. If we could learn where it was legal to shoot and not shoot at that age surely 18 year olds should be able to figure it out today.
I’ve yet to see a gunshot wound come through the local hospital when I’m seeing someone in the ER but there sure are a lot of smashed up people from seemingly endless MVA’s keeping the orthopedic surgeons busy. This is in an area where everyone seems to have guns.
Langman has pointed out the hoops that those of us who like to pistol shoot have to go through. In Vancouver I could have acquired a pistol illegally within 24 hours had I been so inclined. One doesn’t suggest banning automobiles because some drunk decides to drive his pickup into a crowd of people. Beverly Akerman should seek psychiatric help for her problems before she makes a total ass of herself.
The only type of gun control acceptable to me is that required to steady the barrel so I hit my target.
“In a letter to Harper, Passa wonders why we permit so many guns in our society since we no longer hunt for food.”
People like me have guns to protect ourselves from people like her daughters boyfriend.

Yeah they won’t be happy until we’re shooting at a range with our firearms mounted on a swivel rod bolted to cement with a limited range of travel. Those of us who like to hunt will go to a local cow ranch and shoot our selection of docile dinner while supervised by a government bonded agent.
Don’t laugh because it will come true.
When I was a kid it was not unusual for two kids around 14 years old to go “plinking” at tin cans with a .22 LR unsupervised. No one thought it was unusual and if a coyote died along the way then it was its own damn fault. Heck I remember when coyotes were scared of humans and rarely seen, nowadays humans are a source of food in the form of little dogs.
Port Arthur, Virginia Tech, Polytechnique – all these are reasons why I think a certain percentage of the population should be allowed if they have completed a course, to CCW.
Most states allow the visable carrying of a handgun.
This was promoted recently as gun owners gathered in various restaurants in Washington, all with holstered hand guns.
They are pressing for the right to carry handguns in CONCEALED fashion.
One fellow complained, ‘it looks crude to carry this in the open as I wear business clothes on the job.’
CBC radio.. no link.
Diificult to tackle this one without appearing a bit cold and callous, but sometimes people need a whipping boy when they perceive that they have acted inadequately.
@ TG,
Actually most states allow conceal carry (CCW) with a permit, I think there are only 3 left that don’t which includes California but we all know how stupid that state is (speaking of which our gun laws regarding magazines etc. come from there, the libs basically copied them). Some states like Vermont don’t even require a permit.
I think the person on CBC wanted to CCW without a permit because he can open carry.
In the US, many states had gun laws similar to our own, and most still do, with an exception of CCW. In the 90’s an insane person drove into Luby’s restaurant and started killing people with a handgun. A doctor of chiropractic was in the restaurant with her parents and she had left her handgun in her car because it was illegal to carry it concealed into the restaurant in Texas at that time.
Similar to Canada, Texas allowed some people to carry a concealed weapon but it was at the discretion of their firearm authority, and like here only for people with political connection or inevitable threat to life without police protection.
Well practiced with her firearm, the doctor realized she could have dispatched the murderer if she had her gun with her. Unfortunately her parents were both killed.
Instead of whining about inanimate objects like handguns, she being smarter than the average person launched a campaign to force states to issue CCW permits to people who have no criminal record and can demonstrate proficiency with a handgun.
This was the largest massacre in the US until Virginia Tech.
The CCW permits have been an amazing success in the US. They are rarely confiscated (much less than driver’s licences). There are rare infractions. And unlike all the liberal’s predictions, there have been no mass shootouts on the highways and such between CCW permit holders.
Canadian law permits CCW (called ATC here). Unfortunately our firearms officers are under the political mandate of our betters and only issue these to people like certain anti-gun advocates who are scared for their lives.
