Mike’s “nature trick”

[T]he Team had a problem: actual reconstructions “diverge” from the instrumental series in the last part of 20th century. For instance, in the original hockey stick (ending 1980) the last 30-40 years of data points slightly downwards. In order to smooth those time series one needs to “pad” the series beyond the end time, and no matter what method one uses, this leads to a smoothed graph pointing downwards in the end whereas the smoothed instrumental series is pointing upwards — a divergence. So Mann’s solution was to use the instrumental record for padding, which changes the smoothed series to point upwards as clearly seen in UC’s figure (violet original, green without “Mike’s Nature trick”).

As embarrassing as the e-mails are, some of the documents are more embarrassing. They include a five-page PDF document titled The Rules of the Game, that appears to be a primer for propagating the AGW message to the average subject/resident of the United Kingdom. The document suggests that it is a precis of a longer document housed at the Web site of the UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

    Realizing that you have been taken for a sucker is the hardest of all conditions to deal with.

    Jones claims the files were obtained illegally as if that absolves the content. It doesn’t and it is enough to destroy all their careers. Jones gave a foretaste of his behavior in 2005. Warwick Hughes asked for the data and method he used for his claim of a 0.6°C temperature rise since the end of the nineteenth century. Jones responded, “We have 25 years or so invested in the work. Why should I make the data available to you when your aim is to try and find something wrong with it?” He has stonewalled ever since. The main reason was because it was used as a key argument in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Reports to convince the world humans caused rapid warming in the 20th century. The emails obtained are a frightening record of arrogance, and deception far beyond his 2005 effort.

In the big picture windmills are silly, public transport is an archaic and expensive monument to planners, global warming, as with other agents of extermination, is inevitable unless it’s not, and humankind plays at poking sticks in the campfire. When will we act on God’s mandate to harness the power of suns and to speed across the vastness of our playground, this universe? The challenge used to be finding enough food and shelter; now it is creating conditions to ensure humanity’s survival to the end of, or beyond, currently known space and time. Aw he!!, go ahead, put up another windmill.

  13. dollops, you should re-read Rita’s post, which I thought was excellent. This isn’t about tautologies and tilting at windmills, it’s accepting the reality that we must begin the effort to find alternatives to fossil fuels, on a micro and macro level.
    Continued insistence that debunking AGW theory (and condeming their arrogance and hypocrisy) is mutually exclusive of getting to work finding the next, cleaner, fuel source, will only bring UN corrupto-governance closer to reality.
    No, that’s not the fraud of biofuels, windmills and solar power. It’s putting at least some of the resources towards proper energy technology research. It’s accepting the obvious fact (or it should be) that nuclear power is extremely efficient and safe (the Candu reactor actually recycles nuclear waste).
    No, it’s not putting is into the stone age to prop up corrupt and ineffective world governance elites so they can take the first derivative of the global communist movement. It’s about mobilizing government to be key players, rather than Mr Dion’s nonsensical approach of punishing “polluters,” getting a payday while expecting individuals to make the transition (do the work) for them.
    But, refusal to accept any part of the environmental argument to (properly) research and fund energy research sets up any skepticism of AGW theory as backward and jaded. The suppression of this latest, and damning, release of data is a demonstration of that argument.
    I am convinced the most efficient approach is to seek out those who agree that we can (not tomorow, but some 50 years from now) eventually get off fossil fuels. That’s how you flush out the socialist world governance agenda, which is more focussed on collecting money and gaining power.
    Stephen Harper remarked that Canada is, and will remain, an energy superpower. That’s what he meant. Transition out of oil, using a collaborative approach, set doable goals, and do it right here in Canada.
    Or, would you prefer windmills scarring Wolfe Island?

  15. It’s “Mann’s ‘Nature’ trick”, not ‘nature’ trick’, as in ‘Nature’, the formerly eminent scientific journal, which has turned itself into a propaganda organ for AGW. God made nature, Michael Mann made the hockey-stick graph (his ignorance of history amazes still – there was no mediaeval warm period in his first version), and the two have nothing to do with each other.

    They will defend more tenaciously than the Japanese garrison of Iwo JIMA or OKINAWA—

    original hockey stick as peer-reviewed irrefutable science….empirical evidence!
    The OBOZO/Democrat regime, Brown’s NU Labour, the EU super-government all have hitched their wagon to this…..if this CO2 Climate Change Hoax actually unravels so will the entire leftist empire….and they know it.
    You can bet if OBOZO wasn’t told of this before bedtime Friday—-somebody woke him up in the night.
    This not the end of this obscene hoax but could hopefully be the beginning of the end.
