And Canada FAILED to show why we’re better than the retarded (developmentally delayed) society/country from whence they came. Why did we do this to ourselves?   2. Favil – I can’t agree with you. His parents probably left the sh-t hole they lived in to come to Canada for a better life but they brought Sharia with them and want to be able to use it in our free country.
    This dangerous and insidious to our democracy. It absolutely should not be tolerated. This is the kind of lunacy that allows them to rule over their women – to beat them and yes, even honor-kill them.
    Kathy S is quite correct that the time has come to close the borders to further immigration of Muslims. The next thing our country does is make it loud and clear that those who are here from another land must adapt to our society and not us to their previous society.
    It may be too late for England and France but if we don’t get a handle on this thing pretty quick we too will be up sh-t creek.

    In the UK, it is generally not the previous Muslim generations (the immigrant parents or, increasingly now, the grandparents) who make up the extremist demographic. It is essentially young, British-born Muslim men. A very similar demographic lurks behind our own domestic Islamist woes.
    Kathy is right too. Canada is under no obligation to admit non-citizens and is completely free to decide on whom it will or will not accept as immigrants. The only thing that prevents any Canadian government from doing so would be a lack of gumption, not law.
    If what Nonie Darwish experienced is true, that CBSA officer is guilty on two counts. He used his official status to intimidate someone in pursuit of his personal religious beliefs and, in doing so, he uttered a statement without authority that contradicted government policy. That’s insubordination.
    Oh, but I forgot. The CBSA is unionized; we’ll never be able to turf him.

    This seems a little more than unreasonable to me. Many of the people you would ban have very important jobs. Perhaps if we graduated more engineers and doctors instead of social workers and activists we wouldn’t need immigration, but I digress. The people we need to stop from coming to our country are those that do not have job skills that are required in our markets.
    Implementing this simple principle would eliminate most of the riff raff that Kathy speaks of. JMO
    In addition, a re-evaluation of our policy regarding refuges is in order. Canada must be a place where legitimate refuges can seek safety, not a mark for riff raff and bums.
    Plus, I disagree with reuniting families for the sake of reuniting families. For example, were I to immigrate to another country I would likely contribute more than I take; but, if that country reunited me with my brother to help my self-esteem, his draw on society would cancel out the surplus I produced. This type of program should only extend to little old grandmas.

    They’re not all the same. Just as there are crazy Christians like David Koresh and/or the leaders of polygamous communes, there are crazy Muslims.
    People of your political persuasion rightly scoff at the assertion that there is a vast right wing conspiracy. I urge you to do the same in the context of Muslims.
    I live in major metropolitan center, and what I’m actually seeing, knowing more than a few first generation Canadian Muslims, is that Canada and the values of the country are having a moderating effect. The socially conservative values that their parents may hold, are in most cases, not permeating down to their children. And even in the case of their parents, I don’t know anyone who’s out yelling about jihad or the imposition of Sharia law.
    Go out and meet a few Muslims, make friends with them, and then maybe you’ll have a less bigoted world view.

  12. Tim- Get off your high horse. I’m from the boonies, and I’ve met plenty of muslims. I’ve interacted with them in sport, business, and social settings. They cannot, and will not, ever be “friends” with non-muslims. Never.
    You think Toronto’s bad, try Calgary. With so many airport services being contracted to the private sector, it’s easy for certain ethnic groups to end up in complete control of services, such as security. I’m all for privatizing certain things, but the security of the general public needs more government oversight.

Check your canadian ideals at the door, they are not welcome there.

Since there are a number of “white” Moslems (from Chechnya and Bosnia) fighting in Afghanistan and in Iraq against Westerners, I truly hope you don’t equate the colour of a person’s skin with the backwardness of their beliefs and their barbarity (check what happened to the school kids Muslim terrorists took hostage in Chechnya).

  27. I don’t think Kate’s a bigot, and I doubt that all Muslims (or even those that read Sharia) are evil.
    But people who try to limit freedoms – freedom of speech, freedom of choice, liberty, etc. – ARE EVIL. And this border guard was doing just that.
    Anyone who wants to limit discussion – such as the tree huggers on Global Warming, or beloved Jennifer Lynch of the CHRC on Section 13 – are EVIL.
    Think about history and all “western” governments. While elected majorities (e.g. Ontario’s current Liberal party) can somewhat effectively reduce debate, and ram through legislation, ALL governments allow debate/discussion on all proposed legislation. As far as I know, even the general public may request to be heard by parliament on specific issues. This is GOOD.
    Kate provides an open forum for everyone to express their views – both pro and con – and with limited exceptions, permits ALL viewpoints to be expressed and posted. This is GOOD. Censorship is bad, as it limits freedom.
    Freedom, anyone?

    No I didn’t. I simply disagree with your solution to the problem we both agree exists. If I follow your logic, we would also have to ban all travel by Muslims into Canada and the US; and, we would have to properly vet such people to make sure they’re not lying about their religious beliefs.
    All of that being said, if I could grant you the power to do as you say I probably would. Such a blunt and bold move would likely accomplish what you say. Since I can’t grant you that I’d simply like to suggest that your idea is completely unrealistic.
    Btw, wouldn’t that mean banning Americans from immigrating to Canada?

    Muslims don’t make the top 100 list of things that are wrong with Canada. I’m happy to see you state explicitly that somewhat amenable to restricting immigration, somewhat, but if we were to ban Muslim immigration while letting Tamils and Jamaicans fill the void we’d actually be even worse off.
    Close the borders. Strip the citizenship of anyone with more than one passport. Disenfranchise recent immigrants, just as we did during the Great War. End race and gender quotas. They’ll then move back home on their own accord. What, you think they’re here for the climate? For their genuine heartfelt love of the Canadian people? Canada is actually a pretty sh!tty country and if we stop bending over backwards for immigrants they’ll stop coming, no need to set limits or quotas.

  41. Well, first off we have to think about the fact that there are radical Islamic agents immigrated into the US and Canada, waiting to be activated. Then they will begin their mission which could result in lots of bloodshed.
    Then you have radical Islamic loyalists who have not been singled out for any particular mission, but who will knowingly support such a mission if they were asked by the right people.
    After them you have Muslim Americans and Canadians who would only reluctantly support some violent act if family and friends were threatened in their home countries.
    Next up you have Muslim Americans and Canadians who would not assist violence for any reason. However, they are sympathetic to the radical Islamic cause and might contribute financially or with general approval with other Muslims. (You saw the same thing in Northern Ireland, people who would not support the IRA but who could still understand the cause and appreciate the ones who would carry out violent acts.)
    After that, you have whatever Muslims are left.

  45. Returning by air from out of the country a few months ago, I was struck by the people checking our passports and asking us questions about our trip: Of about 15 agents, not one was Caucasian. If you looked at these government/airport employees in a completely unprejudiced way, you’d think you were somewhere in the Middle East.
    As a white Anglo-Irish descendant, I was somewhat taken aback that there was not one white agent. I’m all for equality but what I saw wasn’t equality … was it?

    Women have the same rights as do men in this nation and there are laws against 50 yr old men buying and wedding (or not) a 12 year old child. Children are people not property – as they are in some hell holes in the world – in Canada.
    These Muslims would not attempt to immigrate to this country if they knew beforehand that they would not be able to practise their racism (against all non Muslims) in Canada.
    Canadians; with their inferiority complex, looking everywhere but in their own country for ideas on how to run their own nation, have watered down to a runny gruel what our stalwart, brave pioneers built the infrastructure of this great nation on – listed in the BNA Act; that act that the PET burned while flitting around the Queen.     I live in calgary i have seen not to long ago , the tamil tiger’s(muslims) blocking off the hiway in toronto because we would not help them kill the sri lankans ,and calling for the death of stephen harper , and isriel . I have a daughter who lives in the north east so i take her out for walks often when i walk by a muslim i can tell they are muslim becaseu they won’t say hi back and they often stare at my daughter not me .
    Maybe it is becasue they refuse to lock eye’s with me because they tremble with fear when they see a westerner looking them right in the eye’s and they are unarmed , i have made several attempt’s to just be freindly and they refuse to reach out and shake my hand or acknowledge my exsistence.
    How ever i have had sieks ,and hindus both sya hi and sya hi to my daughter and smile at me , i have even helped a hindu east indian get unstuck in the winter with my truck and he thanked me greatfully in broken english .
