  1. In the Green Party posting by Kate yesterday, in which Liz May accuses us of F*cking Up The Planet For Our Kids, maz2 commented and linked regarding Garth Turner being turfed by the Liberal Party in Dufferin-Caledon. As Steve Janke put it, Garth has lost an uncontested nomination. wow… and I laughed out loud, what do they say about karma?
here’s the link again in Reader Tips, for more coverage regarding someone so loved in the past here at SDA.

  2. Awesome recording, I used to listen to Casals all the time, but never chamber music stuff.
You know, thinking about health care reform in the US, I’m wondering with my mildly paranoic mind – could the government somehow reach a deal with private insurance companies, then blindside them down the road with eg increased regulations, or increased “obligations”, therefore bankrupting them, and hey presto, government health care just like the auto companies?

  3. Thanks Vitruvius! I had a look, and you know, that setting looks like the backdrop for Yousef Karsh’s famous portrait of Casals. That got me thinking – I note that the film was made in 1954, as was the portrait, and the portrait was made in Prades also! Ah, the internet satisfies to an amazing degree.

The first album I bought with my own money was the Casals Bach Suites – recorded 1936-1939. I remember being so excited ordering records through a catalogue – and they were eventually delivered directly to my (parents’) door!
I still have many – um – what my daughters call “big black CDs”.

  4. Erik, your question about the government blindsiding the insurance companies is a valid one. This is SOP for radical left governments. This is exactly what happened during the 1920s in Russia.

  5. Ken (Kulak) – yep, it’s sad to think these strange thoughts to one’s self, but then realize -well, ya know, self, it’s entirely possible!

I’ve heard about the demographic health care time bomb before – directly from and ADM in BC
It seems like it will be ugly – and again, I wonder if certain people in the US want to have something in place before their time bomb detonates.

No significant increase in public school cases but trustee concerned by lack of notification from city
This little piggy flu pandemic hasn’t come to Toronto public schools this fall.
A month into the school year, Toronto District School Board officials say the H1N1 virus, popularly known as swine flu, isn’t keeping more students home sick so far this school year.
Health officials had warned the swine flu’s second wave would hit schools hard when classes started in September. But a report to the TDSB’s health committee says no significant increase in overall absenteeism has been noted across Canada’s largest school board.”

  9. “Charles Adler Leading Poll of Best Pundit in Canada
In my web poll of the best opinionist in Canada, Charles Adler is out to an early lead. My readers really like the “Boss of Talk”. I listen to his show every night on CKNW 980 in Vancouver at 7pm Pacific. The candidate that I endorsed, Andrew Coyne, is 14% behind Adler. I just don’t understand how 1/4 of my readership would want to go to Chantal Hebert first for “op-ed” on breaking news? Authorities at “Statcounter” may have to investigate allegations of erroneous polling results. Could a single Hebert loyalist have seen the poll and alerted sympathizers? Who can say? The poll continues…
Results as of my writing this post:”

  10. Today’s (9/13) National Post is carrying the story of two Kuwati women on the front page who, as members of the Kuwati Parliament, refuse to wear the niquab. Needless to say, it’s got some colleagues’ knickers in a knot, claiming sharia etc, etc, etc.

Does anyone in the Chilliwack-Frase area have any info on Chuck Strahl’s health? He’s one of my fav MP’s…and haven’t seen him at the front HoC lately.

  15. meanwhile in economic news, the world ceases to spin as NDP MP Thomas Mulcair actually acknowledges that yes – one needs to be responsible for spending.
Great thing our valiant fiscal cons [/sarc ON] are so deeply concerned about the nation’s finances that they stopped spending at $190 billion. Actually, that’s not true. They keep on spending, they just don’t publish any forecasts past 2014.
    How kind to the taxpayer.
When the beggars meet the choosers

    Last Updated: 13th October 2009, 12:45am
With the global economy in tatters, the deficit rising and another budget deficit looming, MPs on the House finance committee have their work cut out for them.
MPs will have heard presentations from more than 400 groups asking for a handout by the time Finance Minister Jim Flaherty sits down to pen another stimulus-spewing budget after Christmas.
    ‘A LOT OF REQUESTS’
“It’s striking the number of people who have an ask in terms of more government investment,” said NDP finance critic Thomas Mulcair. “There are a lot of requests for more government spending at a time when we’re already at record deficits.”
As a senior member of the committee, Mulcair said he has been trying to caution people that rather than looking for new money, they should be trying to argue to keep the money they already have.

  16. Nudder Ekos poll on the way soon. Just hung up from answering the questions.
Mostly economy based with a smattering of next election questions.
Had to repeat this one ,just to make sure someone actually thought this thought,
“Would you prefer a larger government with higher taxes and more services, a smaller government with lower taxes and fewer services or do not know?”
    Any guesses how I answered……lol

  17. I think that the real reason for that bomb is to let the Mullahs have no illusion that their bunkers will protect them from retaliation. At least that is why I would have one, and I would be building more and better ones all the time.

  18. Re my above comment on Michaelle Jean’s inflated sense of herself: This shouldn’t even be an issue, let along referred to in the press as “the flap” between PMSH and the GG.
The GG KNOWS her position, it’s just that she refuses to be put in her place after bouncing out of it. Such gall. Such entitlement.
    A new GG soon, please.

  19. Re: “Transit Special Constables will begin enforcing new fines for all things discourteous”
More parasitical government jobs that produce nothing of value. Another drain on the economy of working people, rich or poor.
