Bob Rae has been handling the posts for several days as part of his foreign affairs critic job ago and has been interviewed on defence subjects by several media outletsin the past few days.

The Liberals have cared not one whit about the military or National Defence since the 1950s. Why would anyone expect them to change now and assign any priotity to naming a replacement to the Hamas Thug?
The Lieberals ONLY priority is getting and maintaining power.All the rest is just frickin window dressing.
Possibly Ignatieff will take over the position of defense critic also,thereby dispelling the notion that the important positions are held by Toronto MP’s. On the other hand,Frank Mahovolich would make an excellent defence critic,he did play for Montreal for a while as well as Toronto.

Thanks for sharing that, Gus. Those are Dion-like numbers for Iggy, a fact which warms the cockles of my heart.
Further to the AngusReid poll results, we’re in a similar situation polling-wise as we were before last year’s election. I don’t think they’re smart enough to take advantage of it, but last year I had mused amongst my colleagues (with whom I muse about such things), that the NDP could make a serious push to become the “default” opposition vote. They need only to moderate some of their policies, and follow the example of many of their provincial counterparts, past and present.
With the Liberals imploding under Dion (last year) and Iggy (presently), the notion that the NDP could break out of the political wilderness and become a mainstream party seems at least plausible. Certainly, with Taliban Jack starting to behave more responsibly recently, and actually judging legislation on a case by case basis, he can make a case for being a more seasoned, and mature legislator than Iggy.
I say this strictly from an academic standpoint. I have no desire one way or the other to see it happen, but am merely surveying the political landscape and seeing opportunities therein.
Perhaps they cannot find anyone who knows of the invasion of Norway on 6Jun44, is familiar with the Canadian attack on Vichy Ridge in 1917 or can wear a Kevlar helmet backwards.
Hans….please do not compare the tragedy of the Halifax explosion to the gang of thieving criminal libranos.
My mother’s family was decimated on that fateful day(my grandmother was 8 years old, was found under a pile of rubble with over 30 pieces of glass in her, and her whole family was killed).
Comparing that tragedy to the libranos current state of affairs is like comparing an eight year old kid with brain cancer to a junkie with AIDS…..it just is not the same.

Responsible behaviour is totally out of character for Jack Layton. Is it possible that he’s simply displaying political savvy in order to avoid an election in which he knows full well that his party would be savaged at the ballot box? Appearing to take the high road … unfamiliar territory for Layton … and distancing himself from the self-destructive Liberals would be the wisest course of action at this point.
biffjr. @ 10:36 — I suspect you’re right. Taliban Jack’s recent behavior is almost-certainly the result of political survival instinct. I personally don’t think Taliban Jack or his advisers have the political smarts to reason beyond this instinct. They’ll do either one of two things.
If they feel politically safe, their actions are determined by reflexive, hard-left ideology (to wit, 79 out of 79 votes against the Tories in the previous legislative session). If they feel politically threatened, their actions are determined by survival instinct. In either case, reason does not enter the political calculus.
