  2. I saw the most incredible documentary about 9/11 last night. I sat rivited to the TV for over an hour. Here’s the weird part – it was on CBC. For people like me who’ll do anything to avoid that channel you might want to pick it up for this one. Passionate Eye Sunday Showcase, September 13th, 102 minutes that changed the world. Although a little hard to watch at times it is truly outstanding.

    Is anyone else feeling totally abused by the media’s constant talk of an election throughout the summer and the Liberal$’ and NDPs’ constant threats of bringing on an election this fall?
    Now that Prime Minister Stephen Harper has called their bluff (no backroom deals) and the NDP know that their support is bottoming out, they’re thinking of supporting the CPC? When does this blackmail end?
    I’m getting sick of it. I can only imagine how Stephen Harper and his party feel.

    I don’t want to sound like the class genius–water does not melt–however ice ice does. The miniscule amount that atmospheric pressure has on the melting point of ICE is negligable, and most lilkley can’t be measured with a standard alcohol or mercury thermometer.

  7. Oh, bullshit. Water comes in at least three phases, the solid of which is typically called ice, and the gaseous of which is typically called steam. To suggest that water does not melt from its solid form into its liquid form just exhibits a misunderstanding of the nature of the phases of matter. Never mind subliming. Furthermore, atmospheric pressure is not the only pressure in a glacier. Glacier dynamics are not a joke. God smites people who belittle physics. They are no better than the main-stream media “journalists” who also pretend to know what they are talking about.

  8. Ice melts, water boils, steam condenses into what?? Ice can “sublimate,” but you can’t melt water, at least not on the icefields of Eureka. Yes you can melt solidified water, and that my friend is called ice.

  11. No. Water is the common name of the chemical compound H2O. Liquid water is not the same as water. Liquid is a noun-modifier. Like solid and gaseous. It’s still the same noun: two hydrogen atoms plus one oxygen atom per molecule ~ water. And that’s why, when people ask me for a glass of water, I always ask: would you like that in the solid, liquid, or gaseous phase ?-)

  16. The Calgary-Glenmore by-election ended today with the Wildrose Alliance (Paul Hinman) winning the seat. 2nd were the Liberals and 3rd were the PCs (read Red Tories. This was a very clear statement to Premier Ed and his inner power brokers.
    Premier Ed must be dreading an upcoming leadership review in November. This was clearly a rejection of both Liberals and Red Tories – the wind is shifting.

    I’m with Kelly. Total anarchy reigns in the cycling community in Toronto. I see more bikes going the wrong way down my one-way street than going the right way, and they only have to cycle a short block east to obey the traffic laws. Give me a break.
    Regulate them and penalize them when they break the law.

    Vitruvius, you’re wrong on a couple of things. Water is NOT the common name for the chemical compound H2O. It is the common name for the liquid state of the chemical compound H2O. And steam is not the gaseous form of H2O. Steam is the power produced by water vapor under pressure. Finally, Joe Citizen asked at what temperature do icebergs melt, not glaciers. So while you are correct that pressure matters when considering glacial melt, there is no pressure at play when considering icebergs melting.

My original comment was intended to show readers that at minus 2.5 degees C–we don’t have to worry about the ice fields of the arctic melting away, and raising the levels of the oceans, as the greens and the Libs had predicted. I did however enjoy the arguments with Vitruvius. Keep in mind that a lot of scientific progress most likley originated with Greeks clad in white robes, sitting at a marble table along the Mediterranean Sea, wondering why droplets of water would not mix with olive oil. They tried vinegar–the rest of the story is world history!

    The fourth installment of James O’Keefe and Hannah Giles’s undercover report on ACORN is supposed to drop within the hour at BigGovernment.com and will be aired on Glenn Beck at 5:00 p.m. This time the duo took their sting operation to California, where an employee named Theresa confesses that she killed her allegedly abusive husband, and laid some “groundwork” beforehand. Beck aired portions of the video on his radio show today, and Leslie Sherman of The D.C. Writeup wrote it up:
    10:54am: As the audio continues, James divulges his aspirations to run for an elected office someday. In enthusiastic response, Theresa says she speaks with Congressman and Senators every day. She names Senator Barbara Boxer and Senator McCleod, and 62nd district Assemblywoman Wilmer Amina Carter. Theresa says that “Eden’s” prostitution money would be an asset to him in his quest to become a Senator or Representative.
    11:01am: Regarding the legislators that she speaks with, Theresa says that they (most likely herself and their ACORN office) are lobbying these law makers in behalf of health care reform. Apparently, this “non-partisan” organization that gets government money for housing assistance is using tax dollars for health care lobbying.
    11:15am: Theresa discloses that her ex-husband abused her and “beat the hell out of” her. She then continues to confess, “I killed him . . . . I shot him.” She notes that she had laid some “groundwork” beforehand. When James and Hannah question her as to whether he was abusing her when she killed him, she says that he was not at that moment, but she knew he was going to, she said, “I knew it was coming.”
    Should be an interesting video. Will the mainstream media cover the ACORN story now?”

  42. So the Bloc has announced they will support the Government’s revisions to EI legislation.
    With the NDP already having said they too will vote with the Tories, this leaves the Liberals as the only party not supporting the changes to EI which improves the plight of long time contributors who lose their jobs.
    In other words, after attempting to lead the way to the defeat of the Government, the Liberals end up looking like morons after having the tables turned on them.
    How priceless was this outcome?

    The law is an ass when it comes to bikes. I ride the nwrong wasy on one way streets because its safer. I can get out of the way of things that sre in front of me but I can do nothing about the person who is behind me. On a bike you have to ride to survive, and you don’t do that by following rules that were designed for cars.

I think the latest Ignatieff commercials with the screen of a forest behind (I assume it’s a screen, somehow the lighting seems a bit artificial) — anyway I am puzzled about why he would have chosen the forest backdrop anyway — yeah, yeah, to make everyone think he is a regular outdoor guy. Problem is, he is not. He is the type of person who seems much more at home in the city . . . or even in an office. So lack of authenticity is the visual message. I think he is getting some bad advice.

    Your scenario doesn’t take pedestrians’ or the drivers of vehicles’ safety into account. So how’s that? Cyclists get to do anything they want, eh, regardless of whether walkers or other vehicles are compromised?
    I don’t think so. Not in my universe, anyway.
