  1. When is a Mayor’s political affiliation not important for a wiki entry? Perhaps when that mayor is a supporter of Presidente Obama, Eddie Perez, former community organizer,mayor of Hartford, was arrested on charges of corruption and bribery. Incidentally his updated wikopedia entry does not give his political affiliation (Democrat). Although I googled other mayors and wiki does give their political affiliation.     I once took my bicycle on the GO train from burlington to toronto during off hours. well, never again I vowed after seeing how tranna drivers act around cyclist (maybe that explains the reciprocal but grossly uneven response by said cyclists).
    so put your hand up here at conservatist SDA if you think the cyclist ‘deserved it’. go ahead, gloat the way you did at the closing ceremony of the kennedy camelot. you can do it. you’re hard wired that way. an attitude of blood lust and death worship.

    No, the courier did not deserve to die. What an awful way to go.
    As a driver in Toronto, however, and not a bicyclist (which I was in my younger days in a smaller city), I’m alarmed by the cavalier way in which far too many cyclists navigate their way through the city.
    Bikes are vehicles and far too often, bicyclists go down one-way streets the wrong way and behave like pedestrians, especially at Crosswalks and when weaving in and out of pedestrian traffic on sidewalks. The norm in Toronto seems to be bicyclists who ignore vehicle rules and safety; I’ve never seen a police officer give a bicyclist a ticket for flaunting traffic laws. They should.
    I think it’s time for this city to get serious about the mutual animosity that exists between drivers of vehicles and bicyclists, by ensuring that traffic rules and regulations are adhered to on the part of both vehicles and bicycles. Vehicles are already monitored by the police. There seems to be no monitoring of road safety when it comes to the way bicyclists operate, thus creating a volatile and “hot-headed” atmosphere on our overly congested downtown streets.
    Perhaps bicyclists need to be licensed, like drivers and their vehicles. Things are getting out of hand on our city streets, where there seem to be far too many bikes, many of which are not following the rules of the road.
    How about more bike lanes? Would that help?

    I asked the local cops flat out where Im supposed to ride:
    A if in traffic, risk getting hit and killed as had ALREADY happened twice last year
    B if hugging the curb, risk wiping out when the 1 inch 120 psi tire gets caught in a pothole or storm drain. I broke my collar bone 2 years past when this happened.
    C you ride on the sidewalk and big risk of getting fined by the pigshit cop getting his/her quota who doesnt know what it’s like to have cars zoom past less than a foot from the handlebars.
    so, where to ride when there is no bike lane? where? where?

    maybe I should just get another handgun.

A while back Warren Kinsella made fun of that massive storm in Ontario and blamed God and the Conservatives for it. Little did that idiot know that a young man was killed by the storm.     So glad to know that despite getting hit and killed twice last year, you’re up and running again.
    It’s got to be frustrating riding a bike in a big city. I hear you. And I figure that after this altercation and death, it’s high time cities began to grapple with a viable way for bikes and vehicles to safely move through traffic together.
    Law enforcement is essential, however, and I’m not sure our local constabularies are ready and willing to stop and ticket bicyclists (they already stop and ticket cars) that are breaking traffic rules.

    I am very sorry for that young man that was run down and left to die by a coward like Bryant. Coward Bryant cared more about his own self image than he did for the life of the man he ran over – he ran away! What measure of man would so such a thing?
    I was the victim of a hit and run driver years ago, someone hit when I was walking along the Trans Canada Highway; the yellow bellied coward(s) stopped to rob me before they left me to die. Fortunately for me, a group of CNN men driving to work saw me in the ditch and stopped to help me. I have never forgiven that unknown person who left me to die or the ruthless lieyer who hung me out to dry when he dumped my case for a gument job (with the then ‘new’ Dippers in B.C. who did not want their spanking new ICBC answering for unknown drivers who had committed a crime on the Trans Canada Highway. An accident is not forgivable when the perpetrator runs away.

    Good on the railroad workers. Truckers are usually really helpful in roadside emergencies too.
    I hope those a**holes get caught or get a taste of their own medicine. They may just pick on the wrong guy. It happens – that physopath that ended up being a hit-man for the mafia was interviewed – forget his name – anyway one day some guys pulled up to him harassed him, called him names and said they were going to beat him up-he drove away – they followed him – he was waiting – stood outside his car and when they got out with their baseball bats he shot all six of them and didn’t even think twice about it. He said “they made me angry”.
    Hard not to be angry about something like that – just don’t let it turn you bitter and mean.

    batb….there is one place to start. All bike riders who wish to travel public roads must,by law,have a tag AND insurance. Then maybe the idiots(which far outnumber the responsible bikers) will get the hint that when they are on the road,they are traffice,just like everybody else there.(and don’t even get me started on pedistrians)

  27. There was another thoughtless article by David Olive in Sunday’s Toronto Star, this one about youth and unemployment. He moans about “deficit-stricken governments cutting or eliminating funding for programs such as BC’s Summer Works Program, which matched an employer’s contribution to a student’s pay”, as if all summer jobs came from government largesse. He naturally forgets that the taxes lifted to pay for these programs are responsible for killing jobs themselves, and that the level of bureaucracy introduced to do the money-shuffling is an unproductive drain on the economy, which results in lower wages for those actually doing the hard work of producing goods and services.
    The article starts off by featuring a 22-year-old single mom (“Julie”) who notes that her friends aren’t doing what they’re trained for. This however has been a recurring theme in recent years; we’ve all heard the jokes about “do you want fries with that” re arts grads, for example. She wants to be a social worker, but thinks it isn’t worth doing the schooling right now because of the lack of jobs out there. Olive says, “It is worth it – higher education is a prerequisite to decent-paying jobs in the ‘knowledge economy’ rapidly replacing the ‘hollowed-out’ manufacturing sectors in both Canada and the US”. But the “knowledge economy” (a rather overblown concept) was supposed to be mostly about engineers and computer programmers, not social workers. He also says, “We need Julie to get her diploma and put her passion to work”, as if it’s any of his or anyone else’s business what she does with her life. Naturally it’s better for her if she does get into a field she enjoys, but his whole attitude is the typical leftist one that regards individuals as zombies that can be enlisted and pushed around by government for its own purposes, economic or otherwise.
    “The cost of a lost generation will be inflicted widely, as Canada risks losing its competitive edge and its claim on sustained prosperity”, says Olive. But we started losing that long ago, when Pierre Trudeau came along, and we still haven’t recovered because we haven’t eliminated government intervention in the economy. Economic growth has never recovered to pre-PET levels in Canada. Nor has the number of decent-paying jobs that could be obtained without higher education.

    Nice. With one brush, the cyclist is implied to be of poor moral disposition, and the fact that he was – based upon witnesses – likely dragged to his death is now restated to be a ‘collision’.
    This crap will continue until the dead person becomes one of little consequence.
