It seems to me, from the article, that Mr. Rae is more than happy to give all the credit of a forcefull decision by The Igster to bring down the Govt. That way if and when it fails Rae has no direct connection to the decison, the he can be anointed.

Iggy, you can lengthen your time as leader of the Liberals by delaying an election as long as possible. Or are you homesick and want to go back south?
If you accept the premise that the Liberals must bring down the govenment before the end of 2010; then I concure with Iggy and now is the time.
Personally, I believe an election isn’t necessary until 2012-2013. Realistically, that would require a level of maturity in our House of Commons that I’ve yet to witness; so I won’t hold my breath.

Mr. Rae should not be so quick to dimiss his coalition buddies. I guess he realizes that the Bloc and NDP have absolutely no integrity and, like drowning rats, would fall over each other to jump on the Liberal ship.
I dunno, if the Cons did not betray their voter base too many times, I would have said that nothing could be finer, the Libs would have gotten their rear handed to them in the basket. But now I am not so sure that enough people will hold their nose and vote Cons again.

I think Ignegatiff is being pushed to get at it or get off the pot . Maybe he figures if they donn’t try now it’ll be 2 or 3 years before they get another shot . Either way , it’s only for the liberal party’s benefit . Oh well , we’ll be rid of him soon .

Re: Ignatieff’s health.
I noticed too – he is quite a scrawny little fellow and looks like he has really aged and his face got quite gnarly in the past year.
It looks too like he has stopped dying his hair which is a good thing. At 63 years old you expect some grey.
I think in his younger days he was considered good looking and a bit of a fashion hound with capes and pink shirts and fedoras. Arnold would say a bit of a girlie- man.
Definately not my cup of tea- kind of a spooky looking fellow these days with all that lizard like lip licking and theatrical scowls and finger wagging.

Just watched the report filed on the National. Of course, when Dion was vulnerable last year at this time, both on the Green Shaft and his own leadership challenges, the opinions of Canadians were incorporated into MSM reports – “Harper is prepared to trigger an election Canadians don’t want; less than 18 months since the last election” was the theme. But tonight, no such inclusion of what Canadians want. Simply put – they don’t want talk of an election. Certainly in a slow economic recovery, and most certainly LESS than a year since the last. But it seems, for the CBC at least, whatever the Liberals want, the CBC wants. BTW, since Iggy has blamed Harper for the recession, including the unemployment rate, as an Ontario Liberal, what’s his opinion of the McGuinty gov’t’s handling of both issues? Ogh, wait a second, he;ll say the Ontario gov’t is the victim of the world wide recession. I forgot.
Harper won the leadership of the Alliance after a disappointing result for the party in 2000. He gave that up, putting his leadership on the line for a second time and winning again. Compare that to Iggy, who “won” the leadership in a coronation…. I hope Harper takes this guy down, piece by piece.
On the CBC poll 56% of those responding said they do not want an election to 39% who do with 4% undecided.(I know that’s 99% but it’s CBC math and I bet that missing one percent is favoring no election) Iggy is doooooomed!

I don’t know how to link specific vids…but Baird was interviewed today re: Iggy planning an election. One reporter off camera, “David” sounds like he’s engaging Baird in debate, resembles a Lib barking in parliament, instead of conducting a media interview.

Although a Liberal majority is out of the question, just imagine the nightmare scenario of a Liberal minority propped up by separatists (sovereignists … sorry) and socialists. The country would be hooped for years to come.

The best I heard is if he doesn’t go he will be Dion II. They are already spinning defeat by saying they will reduce PMSH’s minority position readying for a L majority. So, Zsuzsanna and Iggy spend the summer in England and notice that Ottawa’s a backwater compared to London and Cambridge (U.S.A.).
Then, they notice that Bob Rae is ominously lurking somewhere off stage left, surrounded by the Power Corps Boys.
They admit to themselves that this being leader of the LPC isn’t all it was cracked up to be, and plot a way to get out of Dodge, which seems to mean going for a fall election.
If nothing else, when the LPC lose, it’ll let the leadership noose slide from Iggy’s neck and, with any luck, he’ll be back at Hahvahd in time for the beginning of the winter semester.
All I can say is that if this is true I hope Canadians are smart enough to elect a majority government this go round. I for one am sick of the constant threat of an election. And god knows what happens when the Libs or the NDP have the keys to the cash register with that 9 weeks eligibility for EI. Other than that can anyone point to any real idea of what this country should look like beyond a bunch of bums working less than 3 months a year.
Ignatieff’s only hope is to torture Canada with another coalition.
I think that an election depends on whether all of the BQ members are fully eligible for pensions. If memory serves about a dozen are not. Duceppe is widely expected to be about to step down within a year as well. The BQ can look like heroes by saving the country from an election – whilst saving their own necks and being able to pick their exit dates from Ottawa. The question I have is – is this a part of iggy’s calculation and thus he can act boldly without the worry of being called on it?
If in fact the above is not the case IOW the BQ will vote to have another election – then iggy will have started a contest with two and perhaps three very big strikes against him:
1. Canadians have zero appetite for an election and iggy’s pretext is as weak as they come.
2. The option of he and hackey sack creating a separatist coalition is very real and he has done zip to deny the possibility. (heaven knows what hijinks duceppe could have in store in this regard.
3. The economy looks to be in the fledgling stages of a recovery and compared to the obamanation to the south the CPCs handling of the economy looks very sound indeed.

One possible motive may be that by feb/mar of next year Harper would be able to have enough senators appointed to get elected senate legislation passed (along with some very popular crime law that has been held up in the senate for ages) Loss of that honey pot is anethema to the libs. And yet they are loathe to go to the polls fighting against it as they would get their butt$ kicked. Going now is their only chance to stop it.
Ivison at the NP notes that the NDs might not back iggy’s play because they are currently polling significantly lower than they did last fall.
