  1. Yikes Melinda, methinks you may be right, not to take anything away from Feliciano’s rendition but I think Roy hands his soul to God here. Pretty passionate for the son of Celts. Come to think of it the Celts, Gaels, whatever came through Spain.

  2. t.o. gubbage strike?
amongst the gubbage piling up is the crapola about why it is necessary for cupe to launch the strike.
we visited toronto about 3 days after the strike started. stayed at a condo with a very gracious lady (I fixed her window screens on the 20th floor!) she hadn’t a worry in the world about goings on regarding the strike; her condo mgmt long ago PRIVATISED gubbage collection in her building.

  4. Just wanted to add that it is six months since Bambam took office, and in that brief span, he has nationalized the auto industry, nationalized many large banks (except his favoured son, Goldman Sachs, which has received billions directly and indirectly through his bailout programs), and overseen more bank foreclosures since the S&L crisis nearly 30 years ago. Just imagine what he’ll do in the next 36 months!

  5. cal2, re: Elderly overtaking newborns,
Comically, they blame this on an increase in the number of elderly — as if new ‘old’ people are materializing out of thin air. Only in a tossed-off aside at the bottom of paragraph 5 do they mention dropping birthrates. Talk about burying the lede!
The article writer desperately tries to avoid mentioning the other half of the equation — the catastrophic decline in the number of live births — and so must resort to convoluted sentences like this:
“The US Census Bureau predicts pensioners will soon overtake the number of infants under the age of five because old people are now increasing faster than the very youngest human beings.”
    And my favourite nonsense phrase:
“People over 80 are multiplying faster than any other age group…”
Those prolific 80-year-olds, multiplying like rabbits! Exercise some restraint, people!
An insane abuse of language to hide the truth. And yet I get treated like a nutter by some people I work with when I emphasize the importance of the input side of the equation: babies.

  6. Still enraptured from watching an F-86 fly into Calgary yesterday — no other aircraft has quite the same “Buck Rogers” factor. But today’s news is good, too:
Christian Lowe, Secret Program Works to Field SEAL Plane
In a move that harkens back to the days of recycled World War II torpedo bombers sheep-dipped as close air support planes, the Navy intends to field a limited number of turbo-prop attack planes outfitted with the most modern surveillance, tracking and weapons systems to help special ops forces keep track of bad guys and, in a pinch, put warheads on foreheads…

  7. First we had shrinking sheep now shrinking fish.
All caused by…you guessed it….global warming.
“A similar shrinking effect was recently documented in Scottish sheep and Daufresne said it is possible that global warming could have ‘a significant impact on organisms in general’.”
Later-“They found the individual species lost an average of 50 percent of their body mass over the past 20 to 30 years while the average size of the overall fishing stock had shrunk by 60 percent.”

  8. Wondering why there are just reruns of the same tree burning in West Kelowna ?
Two dead calm days in a row (looks like a third one) and no new fear mongering material.
Had a toe to toe, real pissing match with the CBC crew here (Mark Kelly, I think) Was watching them and I took a video of them making up their “news” clip.
They had set up on a bluff overlooking the very small Rose Valley fire. A satellite truck, and about five CBC vehicles. Eight or so “emloyees”.
Monday morning, it was dead calm and forecast to remain so, which it did. Still is. I was watching from a few feet away as Kelly(?) was making (making up) his dramatic clip. The fire in the back ground was no where near any structures and was occasionally lighting the odd pine tree. There was light smoke in the air but still about 15 or more miles visibility. A couple of helicopters were long lining with their buckets.
The CBC “workers” were kibitzing around, getting ready for the “production”. Kelly asked, “what’s the name of this place again ?” (I think he meant Rose Vally) A few more jokes, throat clearing and Roll Em !.
Kelly picks up some dirt/dust and throws it in the dead calm air. (paraphrase) “The situation here in Kelowna remains tense. As you can see the winds are already picking up and the whole area is now threatened. Thousands and thousands have been evacuated and more will likely follow.” (The biggest reason is to keep the streets clear so that emergency vehicles are not impeded). “This is clearly beginning to look like 2003. (not even close at that point) More blah blah
When the BS was finished I went over and said that was pathetic. One of them joked, well we have to torque it up ya know. I asked why so ? He said, well, actually the locals stations do but we(CBC) do not. That is when I lost it. I asked why they did not ‘get it’ ? Even when most commenters on their own CBC blogs call BS on most articles. They told me to keep my voice down as another “session” was rolling. I did not comply. A few more heated exchanges and Kelly(?) turned and walked away.
    Who pays for this anyways.
What really struck me, though not surprising, was how most people ignored the area the CBC was squatting on. The evening before, they were fishing for anyone that would comment, make a teary eyed clip for them. Perhaps the media’s best times are behind them.

  9. A week ago Saturday, the Toronto Star published part of a speech made by Michael Ignatieff at the Liberal International conference the previous week. Here’s some excerpts and my comments:
“Americans are still fighting for rights – public health care, a woman’s right to choose and a person’s right to marry the person of their choice – that are settled questions for most Canadians.”
Health care is not a “right” insofar it is a service provided by someone else who has the right to agree to provide it or not.
The issue in abortion is whether a fetus – a potential human being but not yet an actual, independent one – can be considered to have rights or not.
Religious organizations have the legitimate right not to recognize or perform gay marriages.
“In Canada, affirmative action is explicitly mandated in our Charter of Rights and Freedoms.”
Affirmative action is not a right. This is one of the worst mistakes in the Charter, which desperately needs to be fixed by the removal of s.15(2).
“Getting government off the back of the people is not a persuasive slogan for a country like ours. Canadians know that wise government is essential to keep regions from falling behind, to keep Canadians equal and to keep us together.”
The institution of government is distinguished by its ability to use force. One would think that anyone who respects freedom, for himself and for others, would want to have government off his back as much as possible.
Note how the advocates of Big Government always claim that it is “wise”. Yet the record of government over the past several decades, during which politicians mostly scrambled around like chickens with their heads chopped off and accomplished very little, is not encouraging.
The Liberals have been in power for the majority of the past 50-60 years. They haven’t done absolutely everything wrong, but there’s little evidence of “wisdom” there, so why would they suddenly find some now?
Can we really agree that after 50-60 years of Liberal “wisdom”, no region is falling behind?
Advocates of “equality” have been claiming inequality has been rising since the ‘80s, although this is a bit of a red herring because it’s just an excuse to expand government and redistribute wealth, which already occurs on a massive scale. The Liberals have run the country through a fair bit of that span too.
“The Progressive Conservatives basically accepted liberal Canada and its vision of enabling government.”
Again, government is distinguished by its ability to use force. Force does not “enable” anything, it does not produce or create anything, it is only desirable for self-defence, to prevent individuals from harming one another. That’s why we need a government, and there is no other reason.
“In our country, a politics that arouses ethnic and regional resentment, creating wedges in order to mobilize a conservative base vote, is playing with fire.”
This has been the Liberals’ modus operandi for a long time, particularly with regard to Quebec and to immigrants. Fortunately it doesn’t always work.

  11. Obamacare, Oregon-Style:
Oregon Offers Terminal Patients Doctor-Assisted Suicide Instead of Medical Care
PORTLAND, Ore. — Some terminally ill patients in Oregon who turned to their state for health care were denied treatment and offered doctor-assisted suicide instead, a proposal some experts have called a “chilling” corruption of medical ethics.
Since the spread of his prostate cancer, 53-year-old Randy Stroup of Dexter, Ore., has been in a fight for his life. Uninsured and unable to pay for expensive chemotherapy, he applied to Oregon’s state-run health plan for help.
Lane Individual Practice Association (LIPA), which administers the Oregon Health Plan in Lane County, responded to Stroup’s request with a letter saying the state would not cover Stroup’s pricey treatment, but would pay for the cost of physician-assisted suicide.
“It dropped my chin to the floor,” Stroup told FOX News. “[How could they] not pay for medication that would help my life, and yet offer to pay to end my life?”

  12. Obamacare: As much to do with Racial gerrymandering as health. Probably more so…
Well, it worked out so well in the sub-prime mortgage market, lets expand the idea!
    ==========
Under the Democrats’ health care bill, if a medical school wants to increase its chances of receiving many different kinds of grants and contracts from the federal government, it should have a demonstrated record of training individuals who are from underrepresented minority groups.

  13. Ignatieff went into Eastern Ontario and supported bilingual signs (he doesn’t do this in Quebec). You can get pretty bilingual service in the area or at least someone can be found who speaks some French in most of the stores, but this demand for bilingual signs is sucking up to a few French groups who are pushing for this. He is the pot calling the kettle black when he says Conservatives are the ones encouraging divisions in the country.

  14. “September (Magazine) Ad-Page Tallies Plunge (Dinosaur Media DeathWatch™)
Is September now the cruelest month? It may very well be for fashion and beauty titles this year. The final tallies for those crucial issues are emerging — and for almost every one of the titles, results are terrible.
Magazines’ big hope, and sustaining belief right now, is that the declines stem almost entirely from the recession, not from any long-term shift in consumer or advertiser demand. At Conde Nast, which has built its identity almost as much as its balance sheets around September issues over the years, the recession had better be the main culprit.
Ad pages in the September issue of W fell 53% from last September, according to the company’s report Tuesday morning. Allure saw pages fall 52%, Self gave up 51%, Glamour lost 42%, Vogue arrived down 37%, Details lost 35%, and GQ and Teen Vogue each lost 32% (see graphic).
Those titles were hurt by the absence of the Fashion Rocks supplement this year, so Conde also provided comparisons to last September as if Fashion Rocks never existed. But those comparisons were still pretty grim: By that measure, W fell 47%, for example; Vogue fell 30%, Allure lost 28% and Glamour lost 25%.
The September ad-page picture isn’t much better at other publishers.”

    Council says no to Fluoride
    By Jamie Smith
City council rode a wave of perceived public opinion early Tuesday morning, voting against a resolution to study fluoridating Thunder Bay’s water supply. An option to bring the matter before citizens as a plebiscite was also turned down.
“We can educate people on nutrition, proper oral care…those are the steps that I’m prepared to take first,” said Coun. Trevor Giertuga. “I personally don’t want it in my water.”
While Giertuga said calls and emails from the public were three to one against flouridation, Mayor Lynn Peterson said it was more like 10 to one. Peterson voted against the resolution due to environmental concerns and personal choice.

Police seize ‘lethal’ arsenal on Bay Street
A sniper rifle and several semi-automatic weapons were among the firearms seized by Toronto Police from the upmarket Bay Street apartment of a suspected white supremacist.
All the guns and ammunition were registered and legally owned, but Detective Wayne Fowler called the arsenal “lethal” and the suspect has been charged with storing the weapons unsafely.
