  1. Very interesting despatch, thanks for linking to the Michael Yon site. Beautiful pictures within as well as in his earlier posts.
WRT the ‘living the dream’ comment, it’s good to know that some of today’s young men and women still hold values and ideals bigger than themselves.
30 years ago while sailing on a US carrier for four days, I had the privilege of entering the Marines’ mess deck. Apparently, regular crewmen cannot enter. With a compliment of about 50, they handle internal security issues as well as operate the four cell brig. We each talked about our respective boot camp training experiences and I told them about life onboard a Canadian destroyer. Great guys all around.

  2. The Marines have a reputation to match their image, which is something to behold in its own right.
More than any other military personel I’ve dealt with, those soldiers cut a straight up and proper image. Everything from the cut of the uniform, to their posture and attitude, and their fitness. Canadians, US Army, the Brits all have their share of unfit soldiers, far too many it seems at times.
I’ve yet to see a marine who was overweight or who looked like he could do less than 20 pull ups. Simply put those boys are jacked, and a dedication to fitness like that always means pride and dedication in a wider sense.
    They are an impressive bunch.

  3. I have to agree with the way the US is tackling the problems in Afgh. and Pak. – I think they are going to succeed. (I also think that things are going to turn out good in Iraq.)
The issue I see now (based on reading things from the telegraph) is that the Brits may not have the resolve to continue. There seems to have been a lot of British casualities lately and the public may be turning against the war – kind of like snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

  4. Thanks for the link ‘Kate’. Hoping that all armed forces succeed in eliminating all the terrorists.

  5. “Livin’ the dream, Sir!.”
That’s a quote that should echo through the fields and mountains of Afghanistan. That’s a motto someone should render into Latin.
Let’s see if other ISAF forces will adopt it, too?
The Taliban might start asking for peace talks anytime, now. They are going to find the next few months rough going.

They might as well. Although it isn’t likely.
They have the numbers and birthrates on their side and it’s a War of Attrition.
If they go for peace talks they could get NATO to go home and then take over the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan through the ballot box.
