  5. EBD – what Obama means by ’empathy’ is a belief that the most desirable judiciary opinions are not the result of objective reason applied to factual evidence, but are the result of memories of personal life experiences.
    This perspective totally rejects the function of Reason, it rejects the value of factual evidence, and instead insists that evaluative judgments are derived from and only from, subjective personal experience. In a very real sense, this inserts a requirement for decision-making based on a supposition that a particular group has a specific identity.
    This also denies Obama’s oft-repeated insistence on non-partisanship. What can be more partisan than decision-making based on membership in a group identity? And what can be more biased than evaluating an individual based on their presumed membership in a group rather than their individual behaviour?
    His nominee is also a deliberate political strategy, geared as usual to bring a particular Set of the population under his sway. He requires that a Supreme Court judge have a particular Set of Memories. In this case, he’s after the female, single, Hispanic, and low income Set of Americans.
    Is he after justice? Absolutely not. His focus is on controlling a particular Set of the American population by defining them as ‘his’ by virtue of him giving them ‘their very own judge’.

    Exactly, ET. The invocation of ’empathy’ is a political Trojan Horse; what’s really going on is group-identity hardball. Here’s Pat Buchanan on Sonia Sotomayor:

No explanation, no apology would have spared him. He would have been branded for life a white bigot. Judge Sotomayor will be excused because the media agree with her and she is a Latina who will use her court seat to impose upon the nation the values of the National Council of La Raza (The Race), of which she is a member. Indeed, she sees this as her mission. Speaking at Duke in 2005, Sotomayor declared: ‘(The) court of appeals is where policy is made. I know this is on tape, and I should never say that because we don’t make law I know.’ She and the audience joined in the laughter. Who were they laughing at? Americans who still believe the role of judges is to apply the Constitution as the Framers intended and to interpret the law as written by our elected legislators. In Barack Obama’s America, that is so yesterday.”

    Here’s a dictionary that may help to translate the story from PC English to a layman English:

    The duo must be out on bail already, but as this is a non-story and the identity of the 16 YO perp has to be protected, we shall never know if a person walking in our streets is the one who fired the shots.     I’ll go further and say that “empathy” is just a code word for Leftist political philosophy.
    The U.S. talk radio show host, Dennis Prager, often talks about the difference between the Left and the Right. On the Left, the primary value they ascribe to is “Equality”. But the key to understanding the mindset is to realize that they don’t mean “Equality of Opportunity” but “Equality of Results”.
    Even after 70+ years of seeing the disaster of such political objectives, the Left keeps on trying again and again and … you get the idea. 🙁

    Answer: Because it saves the provinces money for welfare payments.
    EI: Federal entitlement money from the federal budgets
    Welfare: Provincial entitlement money from provincial budgets.

    It has everything to do with uploading welfare payments and improving provincial bottom line budgets for political brownie points.

    Then their faith in God was destroyed, until their churches, all tens of thousands of different “branches and denominations” were for the most part little more then Sunday circuses and their televangelists and top protestant mega preachers were more then happy to sell out their souls and flocks to be on the “winning” side of one pseudo Marxist politician or another. Their flocks may complain, but when explained that they would be on the “winning” side, their flocks were ever so quick to reject Christ in hopes for earthly power. Even our Holy Orthodox churches are scandalously liberalized in America.

  28. Robert W – I don’t think that equality of results is the sole criterion of ‘the just society’ any more.
    That does indeed suggest that the man who works hard, whether in investment in obtaining contracts, as a surgeon, as an engineer, as a farmer, ought to receive the same results for his work and expertise as the man doling out hamburgers at the local fast food diner or the clerk in the grocery store. This is indeed a hard core ideology of the socialist left, where what you do, what you know, what you ‘put into’ something is totally irrelevant to the outcome.
    The left assumes that your skills and work are all due, not to your ahh…skills and work..but to being ‘privileged’. Skills and work are assumed to be commercial artifacts; you pick them up in a store. Some people are wealthy enough to purchase both; others are not.
    That’s like saying that all the input, which includes material, work and expertise that one puts into, eg, making cheese, is irrelevant. All cheeses, whether manufactured out of water, sand, poor milk or top quality products, whether made with expertise or ignorance…ought to come out exactly the same.
    The results of using an ignorant surgeon ought to be identical to a skilled surgeon.
    And so on. Yes, this is a basic criterion of the left. But they’ve added a new switch to the twitch. They’ve added a hierarchical order.
    So, the equality of output is no longer the same, for some of us ought to receive less. This ‘less received as output’ is calculated according to input. The MORE input you put into your work, the LESS output you ought to receive. So, if you work with skill, knowledge and years and years of training as a financier, as a car dealer, as a surgeon, you ought to receive LESS than if you chucked hamburgers at the local diner. Why? Because a new criterion enters the picture.
    The output (lots of money, which is a symbol of your input) means, according to Obama, only one thing: Greed. Your output, the result of your work is evaluated on a scale. The more you get, the less you merit it.
    Great results are no longer related to hard work and education. Again, skills and hard work are no longer psychological attributes but are commercial artifacts that you either have the money to purchase or not.
    Furthermore, the psychological aberration of greed is defined as a key genetic characteristic. It replaces skills and hard work as a cause of wealth. White people are, according to Obama and his wife in particular, the key mutant holders of this gene of greed. Again, skills and hard work have disappeared as input criteria of wealth.
    Strange, but Obama himself earned millions last year from his narcissistic books about himself. Greed? But he’s not white so he doesn’t have the gene? Michelle apparently bullied her way to a very large salary prior to their Elevation; but again, she’s not white so doesn’t have that gene.
    Interesting how the left changes reality.

    Regarding Obama’s perceptions of Greed, only time will tell whether he truly believes it or whether it is just effective political class warfare rhetoric.
    Here in Canada, hasn’t Jack Layton been espousing something similar for years? Yet it has not bought him any more votes than his core constituency. Perhaps the difference is that Canadians have viewed socialism first hand for 40 years and clearly see the flaws in the theory, whilst it’s brand new for Americans and they still are mesmerized by the sparkle and promises of the Obama snake oil.

    Obama’s Identity Politics
    A few excerpts:

    Got that? Obama’s identity politics, where he defines people as operative within an essentially genetic group, is not about empathy but about ‘likeness bonding to likeness’.
    “Ms. Sotomayor has made it abundantly clear that she regards her Latino roots (and gender) as determinants of her way of seeing things. “Whether born from experience or inherent physiological or cultural differences … our gender and national origins may and will make a difference in our judging.” The key, startling word there is “inherent.” She’s claiming (among other characteristics) that an “inherent physiological” difference “may and will” shape her view. Claiming that judgment or reasoning is even partly conditioned by inherent physiological elements of one’s ethnicity is very odd.”
    He continues, “It is very close to, if not the same as, saying that there is innate, in her ethnicity, qualities that make her a better judge. Which she seems to claim. For in the same lecture from which I’m quoting, she concludes “… I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn’t lived that life.”
    We’re all bounded, in this view, by the innate, inherent physiological or cultural properties, and gender, of our given identity. Her identity, to use the word often brought to these discussions, “privileges” her view of things. I’m not sure this is an advance on the thinking – race determines ability – that half a century of civil-rights struggle set out to defeat and exorcise.
    There is, in Ms. Sotomayor’s formulation, only a very thin possibility of an “imaginative leap,” empathy in other words, into the experiences of others truly different from her. And in so far as physiological differences are at play – they can’t change – there is no way at all to make that leap. Identity politics is a closed circuit. It shuts the door to other experiences, even denying the possibility of transcending them. It is the very contradiction of empathetic power.”
    The above, by Rex Murphy, is an excellent outline of the irrational, emotional deadend that forms the view of ‘identity politics’ where you are stripped of your human capacity to think, to reason, the evaluate based on empirical evidence and logic – and reduced to being merely a voice for some assumed, unproven yet firmly believe in, genetic characteristics confined to your ‘group’.

    If the world continues on it’s decade long cooling trend and over the next 20 or 30 years, cooling progresses to the point that food crop production is adversely affected – then what ? Burn more fossil fuels in a desperate effort to crank up the green house effect ?? After all, it would be no fun having to abandon your abode because of a kilometer of ice – as happened only ten thousand years ago ! (Desperate – because CO2 is a very minor GH gas)

    No-one here denies climate change. The planet and universe are not mechanical systems but are physico-chemical-biological systems. That means they are complex; that means that they are constantly changing. So, the climate is constantly changing, going through phases of warming and cooling.
    What many of us here deny is AGW – anthropogenic global warming. This isn’t climate change; it’s warming caused by man. Many of us here deny this.

    By the way, do you mean the 2004 ‘study’ which was debunked as pure speculation? Or the 2008 (there’s a study every four years)? Certainly, using AGW as an excuse to insert more authoritarian government would have disastrous results!

    The climate-change industry — the scientists, lawyers, consultants, lobbyists and, most importantly, the multinationals that work behind the scenes to cash in on the riches at stake — has emerged as the world’s largest industry. Virtually every resident in the developed world feels the bite of this industry, often unknowingly, through the hidden surcharges on their food bills, their gas and electricity rates, their gasoline purchases, their automobiles, their garbage collection, their insurance, their computers purchases, their hotels, their purchases of just about every good and service, in fact, and finally, their taxes to governments at all levels.
    These extractions do not happen by accident. Every penny that leaves the hands of consumers does so by design, the final step in elaborate and often brilliant orchestrations of public policy, all the more brilliant because the public, for the most part, does not know who is profiteering on climate change, or who is aiding and abetting the profiteers.
    Some of the climate-change profiteers are relatively unknown corporations; others are household names with only their behind-the-scenes role in the climate-change industry unknown.     A report by the Global Humanitarian Forum, led by Kofi Annan, the former UN Secretary-General, says that the effects of climate change are growing in such a way that it will have a serious impact on 600 million people, almost ten per cent of the world’s population, within 20 years. Almost all of these will be in developing countries.
    “Climate change is the greatest emerging humanitarian challenge of our time, causing suffering to hundreds of millions of people worldwide,” Mr Annan said.

  49. Whoosh The Pentagon creates defense plans for ALL scenarios. They have one for invading Canada and they have one for Canada invading the US. They do this partly for training and exposing the staff to the unexpected. The other reason is every now and then they have to go kick arse.
