  13. Free wifi at Vancouver airport so I thought I’d take advantage of it to check out SDA and also to share an observation that I made today while enduring moronic airport “security”. On the way to Vancouver my large collection of electronics that I carry with me underwent minute scrutiny but in Vancouver my pack sailed through without a hitch.
    In Vancouver the focus appeared to be on a hypersensitive metal detector picking up flakes of metal on my shoes and I was asked to remove my shoes so they could be xrayed. No footware to take the place of my shoes was available and the rent-a-moron with a Napoleon complex got quite perturbed when I pointed out that what he was asking me to do was an invitation to pick up unwanted bacteria fom the very public carpet at the security area. I eventually removed my shoes and had the small pleasure of knowing that the odors released in the process are not generally percieved as pleasurable by most humans with intact olfaction.
    While observing the “security” personal in action I noticed that they all wore gloves but did not change gloves after touching a passenger. Here we have 2 ideal situations to transmit viruses and bacteria and it may well be that airport security may be the means that the next influenza epidemic begins. I doubt that my writing a letter to the head of airport security would have much effect but if passengers started pointing out practices which can spread infection maybe something would change. (Ideally I’d like to be able to board a plane with the only check being that the .45 auto I was carrying was loaded only with frangible ammo).

    Such is the case – for example – concerning the idea of Infinity, which in reality is the most positive of all (expressions), because Infinity cannot be other than the absolute all [whole], which – while not being limited by anything – leaves nothing outside itself.
    And we have to say that this idea can only be expressed in negative concepts, because in language every direct affirmation is necessarily the affirmation of something, which is to say [it becomes] a particular and determined affirmation; but the negation of a determination or limitation is clearly the negation of a negation, therefore a real affirmation, in the way that the negation of every determination equals basically an absolute and total affirmation.
    What we were saying here concerning the idea of Infinity can be equally applied to other extremely important metaphysical concepts, but this example may be enough for what we are about to explain here; and by the way one must never lose sight that pure metaphysics is, in itself, absolutely independent of all those more or less imperfect terminologies which we are trying to reshape, in order to render them more accessible to our understanding.

  20. I wouldn’t call it a mean humour, Greg, in the sense that that’s not, I don’t think, descriptive. On the other hand I’m not sure what to call it, yet. I’ve been working on what to call it for months now, and I’ve written many paragraphs that I’ve since deleted ~ never published ~ because I always sound to me like I’m being condescending, when I don’t intend that. So, anyway, if and when I do come up with an acceptable theory of what it is, I’ll be sure to keep y’all posted.

I had been pulled out of the normal security as a suspicious passenger because my ticket was only one-way. The fact that it was one way because Air Canada had cancelled my original return was not a factor. I think it is time for some sanity in Airport security. Maybe that’s too much to ask.

  30. I was away all day today so was not able to join the thread on the car dealerships losing franchises. I am following the US side a little more closely so will comment on that and leave the Canadian GM situation for others to discuss.
    It seems that many commenters are/were under the impression that the dealer had not done his due diligence and the contract somehow did not protect him from Chrysler pulling his franchise. His contract did and does protect him. However, there is something else going on that his letter did not mention. I do not think he was dishonest in leaving that part out but the reader is better informed if the additional information is known. That missing information is related to Chrysler being in Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection – a legal question. However, there is also a political angle to this story. It is important to distinguish between the two items, the legal and the political. I shall make a few comments on the legal question first and then on the political question. Oh…, I am not an attorney.
    Chaper 11 Basics
    Most people know that a company may dishonour debts under Chapter 11. However, a company may also have existing contracts impacted without compensation. That is what is going on here. Outside of Chapter 11, it would not be legal for the dealer to lose his franchise without compensation. Under Chapter 11, it is legal for Chrysler to propose any set of changes to existing contracts to the judge and for the judge to approve those proposals. The judge has until June 9 to approve or disapprove these changes to contracts. If approved (and not appealed), the franchises will be lost without compensation as the letter describes. This is a legal question, it is an artifact of Chapter 11 and existed before Obama became President. He is not responsible for the possibilities available to corporations in bankruptcy protection.
    However, there is also the political question. It is here that I feel most commenters “got it” in the earlier discussion. Many brought up the union contracts. Kate brought up the idea of governmental environmental regulations. It is Chrysler’s position that closing franchises will allow the corporation and dealers to charge more for products by reducing competition. They may be right; however, because franchises cost Chrysler nothing, I think the current economic environment is pointing to cost cutting as the way to slow losses or increase profits.
    It is my belief that Chrysler would have had more options in Chapter 11 had the Obama administration pursued alternate policies – including dealing with union contracts. This one is probably not over yet: the dealers will not give this up without a legal fight – particularly if they are facing bankruptcy themselves.

    My feelings this morning are that since taxpayers are bailing out the GM pension pan, the faster the compan6 actually dies – disappears from the landscape, the fewer taxpayer dollars will be wasted.

    It’s a sobering thought. If you’re Jewish or gay the chances are that as soon as you leave the house someone will show hatred towards you.

It is the equivalent of the crap that is going on in Britain — with privileged people exploiting everyone else. The reason behind this ever being a Revenue Canada policy needs to be investigated. Time for a commission of inquiry around why some in the country are more equal than others.
