  1. I’m somewhat surprised that no one made comment on Robert Fulford’s Saturday column in the N.P. where he seems to support Christopher Buckley’s decision to write an expose of sorts on his late parents, Pat and William F.. Chris recently parted with his father’s magazine the National Review, though I can’t say that he is terribly missed. He also chose to support the Democrats and their man, Obama.
That is his choice and he’s welcome to it, but what ever became of “Honour thy father and thy mother”? It is sad that some kids just aren’t willing to forgive their parents for real or perceived wrongs. And although Fulford is an excellent writer, he hasn’t a sense of humour, nor does he generate the sincere warmth that Mr. Buckley could. No parents are perfect but what is the sense in airing their foibles> Christopher at 56 could never hope to gain the fame and notoriety his father had in his 20’s.

  2. I’ll repeat my comment here from today’s Tips.
First, I cannot comment on the legitimacy of either the Tamil or Sri Lankan perspective since both have been heavily edited by their holders and hard data and actual facts are effectively missing. I can only comment on the protests.
Yes, people have the right of peaceful assembly and protests, as they did in January, when they simply lined the streets, but they have no right to interfere with the rights of other people. That is, they have no right to block a road, any road, much less a major Toronto highway as they are now doing.
They have no right to hold a people hostage as they are now doing, preventing people from getting to work and home. They have no right to insist that they will keep these commuters hostage until the federal govt works to impose sanctions on Sri Lanka!
When asked what these Tamils expected the Canadian govt to do – one Tamil speaker said that, as an analogy, Milosevic had been taken to court; armies had gone into Bosnia. Does he expect Canada to do this? Then, when told that the federal govt has gone to Sri Lanka, and asked for a ceasefire, and was refused, the Tamil speaker said that then, Canada should impose sanctions on Sri Lanka until a ceasefire is obtained.
When asked why they had women and young children sitting on a major highway – an elevated highway with low guardrails – which put these people at risk, the Tamil spokesman said, not that he and the Tamils were doing this to their own people, but that the Canadian govt should realize the harm to these women and children from the highway – and come and agree to impose sanctions on Sri Lanka.
This has moved out of the rule of law and into the rule of force. That is, these Tamils are saying that they will take a people hostage, the commuters, and put their own people in grave danger (the women and children), to force the Canadian govt to do what they want.
Think about it. That means that any group can move on to a highway, sit down, and refuse to move until the govt does..whatever it wants.
That’s no longer the rule of law. It’s the rule of force.

  3. The Tamils have escalated their protests and have now shut down the only highway through downtown Toronto and the police of course are doing nothing just letting them close the Gardiner and the Parkway. Hotel Canada is in full swing as these Tamils in their thousands use us as part of their world wide protest to save the LTTE thugs from being defeated and their dream of splitting Sri Lanka in two dies with them.
Mayor Miller hopes if he and they can just start singing Kumbaya this will all go away. If the Tamils can just hold on a little longer the Natives will have time to come from Caledonia, Deseronto and Ipperwash to join their peaceful protest.

  4. 6th grade children wearing LTTE shirts to schools. Is that news? Apparently not. Same children taking day off to attend LTTE rally in Toronto. Is that news? Probably not.
Do you think that Tamil kid got spoken to at the principal’s office? Ain’t gonna happen. Two AK-47 on his shirt are just a form of self-expression, protected by the Charter. However I am hesitating to send my kids to school wearing the range jackets, those with CSSA and NFA badges. I got raided for ordering bullets, don’t want to get raided for being a member of society promoting sport.

  5. Wow, I’m away for a few hours and hell breaks lose! Seems to be that the Tamil supporters are using the same Tactics Rule Books as First Nations groups in Ontario & Quebec.
Not right in either case but do any of the authorities have the balls to do ANYTHING?!?
Next, watch for Iggy & the Video Professor to call our PM a racist! I don’t know how, I don’t know when, but watch for it!

  6. Actually Robert W just watched the chief of police break a sweat being politically correct so I’d say the Tamils own Toronto.
Maybe McGuinty will get tough ….. lol

  7. Mugs, I’m watching him on CTV NewsNet. He mentioned that they’ve also sent extra police to the U.S. Consulate. Could someone fill me in what beef the protesters have with the Americans?

  8. Listen to this
With apologies to those of you in Toronto, such as ET, I find this an interesting test of:
    – Concern for Tamils killed back in their homeland
    vs.
    – Latte liberals inconvenienced
Which emotion do you think will win out?!?

  9. As I said, I can’t comment on the validity of either Tamil or Sri Lankan narratives, since both are heavily biased.
But, the Tamils have no right to take control of a major highway and prevent its use, thus taking hostage all the commuters who use that highway. And, insisting that they will remain there until, not merely someone from govt comes to speak to them, but until the federal govt imposes sanctions on Sri Lanka! That’s an outrageous demand.
Does this mean that, let’s say, an Italian group who are disgruntled with..whatever is going on in Italy, have the right to take over a major highway, and insist that they will stay there until our federal govt imposes sanctions on Italy?
It isn’t up to this Tamil group to tell our govt what to do; it’s up to our govt to make those decisions.
Then, we get the data chaos. Sri Lanka refuses media access. However, all of these people seem to be in constant contact with people back in Sri Lanka – and tell us that there are ‘concentration camps’. When asked what this term means..the vague replies begin with no definitions..and we hear that ‘there is no food’ and then, two sentences later, that ‘the food isn’t very good’.
And we hear that 400 were killed. Then, it’s 4,000; then, it’s 6,000. How does one phone call to a relative enable one to obtain a reasonably accurate number?
Of course, we never hear of the Tamils killing anyone… and the violence of these Tamils here, who attacked our own police who tried to prevent them taking over the highway – we don’t hear about this.
Again, the Rule of Force, which reduces our society to obtaining what you want by sheer force, is a brutal rule. We don’t want to live within such a rule.
We want the Rule of Law, and that means that you don’t take a population hostage, you don’t prevent people from getting to work and home; you don’t attack our police; and you don’t, ever, insist that unless our government does exactly what you want – you will carry out the Rule of Force and ignore the Rule of Law.

  11. The ‘so called law abiding gun owners’ like to whine about how the US imposes trade barriers for the firearms, parts and ammunition. Those also happen to claim that they are conservatives. But they themselves strangely refuse to listen when I tell them: just watch the news like these – here is the answer WHY Canada no longer enjoys free trade in gun related stuff. We imported too many terrorists.

  12. Well, our resident lightweight’s got a challenge on his hands.
What’s Prentice The Red gonna do with his carbon tax? To him, he’s making the world safer for all of us.
Channeling Al Gore is really what Prentice is all about. Thank you Faux-Cons everywhere. We wouldn’t have had a carbon tax without you:
Canadians cool on carbon tax: poll
    DIRK MEISSNER
    The Canadian Press
    May 10, 2009 at 11:18 AM EDT
VICTORIA — Canadians are willing to flirt with a nationwide carbon tax to fight climate change, but bets are off when it comes to paying the bill, a new poll has found.
A Harris-Decima telephone poll conducted exclusively for The Canadian Press found 49 per cent of respondents said they supported bringing in a carbon tax.

  13. The latest news – is that Ignatieff has moved in for the Vote.
He’s contacted these Tamils, who have attacked our police, and have held the public hostage by taking over a major highway- well, Ignatieff has supported their violation of the Rule of Law and their behaviour within the Rule of Force.
He’s told them that HE will bring up, to his caucus, tomorrow, the issue of asking the govt to impose sanctions on Sri Lanka.
Ahh, Ignatieff. Think what he has done. The Tamils have violated our laws; they have taken Toronto commuters hostage; they have made unreasonable demands – that they will use their Rule of Force to make the govt do what THEY want to a foreign country.
So, Ignatieff moves in for ‘the kill’. Just like the Tamils, he’s violating the Rule of Law. He’s after their vote. He says HE accepts their agenda; HE accepts that sanctions against Sri Lanka should be put in place.
And, when Harper disagrees, as he probably will, well – Ignatieff gets the Tamil Vote!!!
Ahh, the Liberals. Trust them to cheat, lie, manipulate and use people. For their own agenda. Power. Just personal power.
So, we have the Tamils using Power to achieve their agenda of making our govt do what THEY want, not what our govt wants. And we have Ignatieff using Power to achieve..votes..for power.
    Disgusting.

  14. Hey – it’s ok. The OPP are on the scene. Just like in Caledonia, they’ll make nice with the poor aggrieved people, screw the locals, spend millions of your tax dollars for overtime, and drag resolution of it on for years.
Good thing we have respinsible leadership in the nation, otherwise it might be worse….
‘Unlawful’ Tamil protest blocks Toronto highway
    Updated: Sun May. 10 2009 11:48:14 PM
Thousands of Tamil protesters spilled onto Toronto’s Gardiner Expressway on Sunday to protest the escalating civilian death toll in Sri Lanka, as police tried to restore order.

  15. gads – forgot!
Steven the Fraud can’t do it all.
Damn that Ignatieff. Damn him. If there was no Libranos in this nation, the Faux Cons could fix it all.
    Just power and votes.
And what – Little Girl Toon – has the Cons addressed – aside from the largest increase in government spending in the history of the nation.
Steven the Fraud’s armor is getting thin.

  16. Ignatieff says Coalition would have deeply divided Canadians.
Uh huh. It only took several months for that to sink in I guess. He signed the document.
As to what ET said, Iggy is a true Liberal, a bottom feeder extraordinaire.
harboiled: been on boil way too long.

  18. This is a provincial/municipal problem, is it not? Where is Mcsqinty?
25 years ago these gangsters would have been rounded up and put in the drunk tank for the night and sprayed with water hoses if they caused trouble.
They should be ordered to take themselves over where the ‘action’ is if they wish to help their fellow terrorists – take Ikky to help, if he is so concerned…take ALL supporters of the LTTE ‘over there’ – this is NOT Canada’s war. Our country is not at war with Ceylon; we can do NOTHING to change anything over there.
What is wrong with the citizen’s of Toronto? Don’t the citizen’s out number these people? This nation belongs to Canadian citizen’s; not Mr. Miller or McSquinty!! Get out there and ‘protest’ back – take your ‘right of way’ on your own streets with force of numbers.

  19. Well ET, I predicted it and you confirmed: Iggy caved into the protesters … big time. Now watch a string of other groups use the same tactics.
Must be nice to come to Canada but not really care one iota about being Canadian.
I reposted your great comments on my blog!

  20. Apparently, they also want to talk to someone from the province as well, even though province has nothing to do with foreign policy.
But the joke’s on them, due to Toronto’s great multicultural mix, there are no Conservative MPs from Toronto, so there’s no reason for the CPC to care about what happens in Toronto, especially if it embarasses the leftist municipal government or the Liberal provincial government.
And somehow, as might be seen from the tone of the now-closed comments section at the CTV link about this (it’s at National Newswatch), if the liberal-leftist federal opposition parties did try to make an issue of this, or force an election over this issue, they might be pretty surprised at the results.

  21. BTW, at CityPulse 24 (now owned by CTV) after softball interviewing a young protest “organiser”, the bint doing the interviewing on the overpass said, “Always a pleasure to talk to you,” to him to close the interview. And later after I returned once I could stomach some more b.s., she interviewed some 16-year-old girl who was screaming her answers at the interviewer, and the interviewer didn’t react to it at all. (And ignored a claim that 6,000 people had been killed yesterday [of “her” people] by the Sri Lankans using chemical weapons.)

  22. And for some strange reason, comments sections are being closed down all over the Internet re. this issue. I wonder if the Tamils are blocking ISPs using children in baby carriages?

(And closed at CTV’s report on this too.)

  23. OMG, zoom into photos 8 & 10 of those thumbnails!!!
I have a new slogan for the Conservatives:
Michael Ignatieff: Not a leader, simply an appeaser.

  24. *
looks like we know which way iggy’s gonna play this one… well… in the
parallel universe where he’s already prime minister anyway…
“A spokesman for the protesters told TV station CP24 that Liberal
Leader Michael Ignatieff’s deputy chief of staff has promised to
bring up their concerns Monday in caucus about the civil war in
their native Sri Lanka and the possibility of economic and
    diplomatic sanctions by Canada
    .”

  25. Wow.A Liberal leader appeasing terrorists. How surprising…
Iggy, you are a f’in goof.

  26. Are those protestors the unemployed we are hearing about in Toronto. Remember the woman who stood before a tank, to stop a war, she was run over with not concern. How long before a few 18 wheelers come barrelling thru and suddenly lose their brakes. Those on the highway should be deported ASAP. They are turning a lot of canadians against multicult, and then there is Ruby and another immigrant group.
500 Tamils killed today, probably lots more tomorrow. At least we are learning who liberal voters are, and if that is an example of what liberals and MIMI support, DON’T VOTE LIBERAL.
This is CANADA, not some asian country full of terrorists.

  27. Remember folks,
The Liberal leader, Ignatieff, caved in to terrorist demands.
    liberalism is a mental disease.
As I have stated, how dare these terrorist supporters fly their flag above and next to my country’s banner? I have served her long and well and I will be damned if I stay silent watching this abomination..

  28. Here’s one CBC comment that’ll make good grist for the joke mill:
    “CharlesChristie wrote:
    “Posted 2009/05/11at 2:50 AM ET
“Shane William Brown wrote: This is not a Canadian issue, therefore do not disrupt Canadians lives. If you are so passionate about the issue, go to Sri Lanka.
“Niether [sic] is Afghanistan yet there we are and you folks that think we should bring in the army, what army would that be? There are more protesters than we have army left here at home or close to it. LOL.
“You may not like the protest but right or wrong, it’s getting your attention and if it disrupts your your comfortable little miserable existance for a couple of hours, so what? People are dying needlessly as they are in Darfur etc. and you think by sending a few bucks for aid we can assuge our conscience and forget about them?
“WE have the dumbest and most insensitive prime minister in our history at the helm who won’t even lift a finger to help our own citzens so the protesters ar [sic] not going to get any help from that corner. let’s try not to start a war right here at home. You wouldn’t like it.”

  29. I was in a gun store the other day getting my rifle bore sighted and while chatting with the gun smith was told that Obama had banned the export of .223, .308, and .30-06 ammo. Has anyone else heard this?

  30. It was only a matter of time before Ignatieff and the rest of the Liberals openly support the Tamil Tigers. Never mind they’re flagged as terrorists, that’s fine, votes trump safety and security.
Is there any doubt the Liberals are dangerously morally bankrupt as well?

  34. A CP24 reporter (CityNews Toronto) that one of the protesters mused about doing the same on HWYs 401 and 427 – much larger multi-lane freeways. What a fantastic idea! But this time, do not close the highways off to traffic. Just send some road crews out to clear the “debris” from the side of the road and from the ditches. This way, at least, there will be fewer protesters next time.

  35. softboiled…..Canoe poll now 1406….6% yes…3% unsure(don’t care)…..92%…..NO. Let’s see…that 9% who don’t care/yes…leftards and/or friends…living off the public trough. A week in Yellowknife,in January with no heat outta snap them out of it.

  36. Tamils are are as politically stupid as Palestinians and that’s a whole lotta dumb-ass.
Great protest – piss off everyone but yourselves.
And Iggy the Appeaser looking for some cheap votes . . . you’re supposed to agree with the MAJORITY position. If you are going to get down on your knees and suck for votes, don’t go after the cause of the problem.

  37. Iggy’s team imported these people in the best interests of the Liberal Party of Canada – they should be good for a seat or two out in Scarborough, and as we all know electoral results are much more important than the good of the country.
It is in Toronto’s best interests -certainly those of commuters – that the Sri Lankan government finishes off the Tamil rebels. Crazy as it sounds, a government half way around the world can put an end to unlawfulness here in Toronto that local politicians won’t or can’t do.

  38. The most important question to all those who voted against the protest in the Canoe poll, and to you, ladies and gentlemen, is what are you planning to DO about the LTTE problem in our country. So far you have only been whining about it on the Internet.

  39. So, if I understand the situation, the Tamils have rejected our Canadian Rule of Law and instead, chosen the Rule of Force.
First, using Force, which included throwing a policeman’s bicycle at the police, and throwing things at the police, they stormed on to the Gardiner Expressway, closing it down.
Second, they deliberately set up the blockade using women and children as their shield against the police.
Then, they refused to move until some political figure promised that Canada would impose sanctions on Sri Lanka.
Think about that; they are saying that they, as a group, have chosen that our government will not run by debate over facts, will not make up its mind on issues, but must be run by a particular group, who use the Rule of Force rather than the Rule of Law.
So, using this Rule of Force, they take a community hostage, preventing them from using their own public highways – and insist that our govt do what THEY want. Not what the govt wants; what THEY want. Not via debate, not via facts, but via the Rule of Force.
Third, our police do nothing but dither. Incredible. We get rhetoric about ‘they have the right to protest’..along with ..they are breaking our laws. But nothing, except fears of ‘we don’t want to harm them; we don’t want to create a chaos’.
Fourth – Ignatieff, smelling votes, swoops in to ‘promise’ that he’ll bring up the Sanctions issue.
Think about that. Ignatieff doesn’t know the facts any more than anyone else does. I still find it incredible that these Tamil are in constant minute by minute phone contact with their relatives in Sri Lanka but our media have no knowledge sources. And, naturally, the information we get from the Tamils can’t be accurate; how do they know whether it’s 400, 4000 or 6,000? Who did the body count?
But Ignatieff, smelling votes, swoops in. That’s his style. He has utterly ignored the rule of law and instead, sided with their Rule of Force.
Speaking of Ignatieff and votes, he’s informed us today that the Coalition would have divided the country. But wait, wait, wait. He signed that coalition. He said nothing; he signed it. He signed it. Doesn’t he have any integrity? Obviously not.
Speaking of integrity, we are also informed by Ignatieff that he’s pleased that in Quebec, so few bring up the Sponsorship scandal now; it’s being forgotten.
But, integrity doesn’t forget. Remember, Mr. Ignatieff, the Liberal party owes the taxpayer over 40 million. When are you repaying us?
