Mark Steyn,     with some assistance from your humble correspondent who pointed out Napolitano’s rather amazing quote to him and wrote “It’s apparently just as politically incorrect under the new regime to profile countries as it is to profile individuals,” reveals Obamaland’s view of Canada as just another border town.
    “One of the things that we need to be sensitive to is the very real feeling among southern border states and in Mexico that if things are being done on the Mexican border, they should also be done on the Canadian border,” Napolitano told a conference in Washington.
    “In other words, we shouldn’t go light on one and heavy on the other.”

    The end of East Germany was ushered in by massive protests across the country. But opposition to the communist dictatorship started with a whisper. A new exhibition in Berlin documents the early days of dissent that began in the spring of 1989 and culminated with the fall of the Wall that November.
    May 7, 1989 was a sunny day in Berlin, both East and West. By then, the Wall had been standing for almost 28 years, and few — no matter which side of the barrier they called home — thought it would disappear any time soon.
    And yet, the beautiful spring day was far from ordinary in communist East Germany. Municipal elections were scheduled — and everyone living in Erich Honecker’s dictatorship knew the ground rules. Everyone was expected to make their way to their local voting station and approve the list of candidates put together by the ruling SED party. There was no opposition. For those who forgot to vote, the East German secret police, the feared Stasi, promptly showed up with a reminder.
    In the evening, the results were announced. Fully 98.85 percent had voted to approve the SED list — that, at least was what state officials reported. As it turned out, however, not everything went completely according to plan on that May day two decades ago.

    Certainly the alleged mistreatment of nannies by MP Ruby Dhalla should be thoroughly investigated and punishment given, if necessary.
    However, after reading this headline, I thought we had returned to the days of the old plantation. I was offended because I believe it is racially offensive to blacks. The headline brought images to mind when many white people believed that a black person’s place in society was to do menial tasks for white people, especially shining shoes. To refer to Dhalla as “Miss Ruby” reminds me of the slaves in the southern United States who called the wives of the slave owners Miss and then the first name of the slave owner’s wife.
    No more Gone With The Wind headlines – I already get the point.

At the recent Summit of Americas where Obama made kissy kissy with all the thugs and dictators Arias gave a speech where he put the blame for South America’s problems with South Americans and not America….

    Fifty years ago, Mexico was richer than Portugal. In 1950, a country such as Brazil had a higher per capita income than that of South Korea. Sixty years ago, Honduras had more riches per capita than Singapore, and today Singapore – in something like 35 or 40 years – is a country with $40,000 annual income per person. Well, we Latin Americans did something wrong.
    What did we do wrong? I cannot list all the things we did wrong. To start, we have a seven-year schooling. That is the average length of schooling in Latin America and it’s not the case with the majority of Asian countries. It’s certainly not the case in countries such as the United States and Canada, with the best education in the world, similar to the Europeans’. For every 10 students who enter high school in Latin America, in some countries only one finishes. There are countries with an infant mortality of 50 children per thousand, when in the more advanced countries it is 8, 9 or 10. We have countries where the tax load is 12 percent of the gross national product, and it’s no one’s responsibility, except our own, that we don’t tax the richest people of our countries. No one is to blame for that, except we ourselves.

    They can’t sell them and make an evil profit, they are spposed to burn the carcasses.

    “But if you read the fine print, the sale of seal products has not been banned, any more than the killing of seals has been banned. There are two exceptions written into the law approved by the parliament today (which must now be given a final green light by national ministers). The first is for Inuit and other indigenous hunters who kill seals for reasons of subsistence. The second exception is where the hypocrisy comes in: it will remain legal for European fishermen to cull seals for what is delicately called “the sustainable management of resources”. A British MEP who could not bring himself to vote on the seal ban today told me he had asked the British government how many seals are culled in Britain every year: about 25,000 a year, came the answer, mostly culled in Scotland by fishermen who consider them a menace to fish stocks. A Scottish MEP told a colleague of mine, for what it is worth, that most Scottish culls involve shooting seals. The bodies are then burned on beaches.
    Apparently, seal shooting by European fishermen is ok because the new draft law will outlaw anyone making a profit from the sale of seal products from culls: the resulting bits of seal can only be sold to cover the costs of the hunt.
    This ban on making a profit is arguably the most soft-headed aspect of all this. A few months ago, a senior European environmental official explained to me that the ban on commercial sealing could easily lead to more killing of seals in Europe. Once seals have no economic value to coastal communities, he said, they will cease to be seen as a natural resource, and will be seen purely as a pest. As they are not endangered animals, fishermen will then shoot them without a second thought.”

  31. Yes, the Tamils have shut down a major expressway in the city of Toronto. Without notice or permission; they simply en masse walked on to the highway and sat down.
    I cannot comment on the validity of either the Tamil or Sri Lankan narratives; both are too entangled with subjective perspectives and agendas and actual data and facts are missing from both sides. Therefore, I can only comment on the legitimacy of a protest.
    Yes, the Tamil-Canadians have the right of assembly and peaceful protest. However, this does not include the right to block a road. Any road, much less a major highway.
    After all, if this were the case, then any group with any perspective could at any time, feel that they should block a highway – just to hold the other citizens hostage, and force some govt or authority to act on their agenda. That has moved us out of the rule of law and into the rule of sheer force.
    The Tamils say that they will maintain their blockade until: some senior MP or MPP or comes and talks to them. That is an act of holding a population hostage (all those commuters who must get to work) and forcing a govt to act. Again, this denies the rule of law and moves us into rule by force.
    One Tamil, when asked what he expects Canada to do, replied, giving examples, that Milosevic was taken to court and imprisoned; that the international community went into Bosnia. Does he expect Canada to do this? Why aren’t they protesting before the UN?
    I have no problem with people protesting on a sidewalk (their original protests in January were lines along sidewalks; the roads were clear); but closing down a road – no matter its size – and making demands that they will hold that road and its travellers hostage until our govt does what they want – that’s moved, again, outside the Rule of Law and into a Rule by Force.
