Reader Tips

Good evening, welcome to SDA Late Night Radio.
On New Year’s Day, after more than a thousand cars were set on fire in France, mostly in the, how you say, banlieues, French security forces described the previous evening as having been ‘rather calm’ and ‘without major incident.'” Oui, tout va tres bien, tres bien, cela n’est rien.
Tonight, for your delectation, we present a musical tribute to the certain je ne sais quoi that has had a huge effect on Canadian politics, particularly on our government contracting….procedures. I am referring, of course, to the Gallic shrug. So without further ado, here’s Ray Ventura et ses Collegiens performing Tout Va Tres Bien, Madame La Marquise.

Just thought I would throw that out there.

  3. Robert W wrote… “Fascinating show today, including a detailed example of how the media manipulates the facts in favour of Hamas.”
What bothers me about the news coverage – and I have seen a lot, believe me – is the lack of background reference of Hamas in MSM reporting.
I can’t recall a war where the MSM doesn’t report in much detail the background of one of the sides fighting.
While reporters collectively say “We can’t give you the full story of what’s happening because Israeli won’t allow us into Gaza”, they have at their disposal clips of Hamas children’s programs which they can show at ANY time, adding context to the story, giving the average Canadian who doesn’t follow politics all that much but wanting more information the background of Hamas. As well, no mention of Article 7 of the Hamas charter.
Why does MSM not feel that it’s important to give the facts on Hamas?

  4. Excellent point, Dale! I just finished listening to Prager’s program (note that you can shove past the commercials – about 5 min each time). He also talks about the questions you’re asking. In fact, this phoney reporting could serve as a textbook on how NOT to be a truly independent journalist.

  5. Hugger – I agree with you … building more prisons in Canada is a great infrastructure project.

  6. A Legal Minefield ? Understatement ?
[ “On the face of it there appears to be clear contravention of the Criminal Code section, but on the other hand you have this Charter protection,” Skurka said.
“I think you are going to have a very firm, vigorous constitutional challenge to this section that will go all the way up to the Supreme Court of Canada. This case will not be over, in my view, for at least five years.”
Blackmore has said that he believes the freedom of religion provision in the Charter would trump any Criminal Code clause. It has been noted that he has a framed copy of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms hanging on his office wall. ] CTV

  10. The YMCA here in Quebec will now longer known under that name:
“The YMCA of Greater Montreal will now be
known as The Ys of Québec to convey new aspirations of development that will
enable it to serve more people. This new name better reflects the Y’s
contribution in all areas of activity throughout the province of Quebec. The
name change takes effect immediately and is accompanied by an adjustment to
the business model and a new visual identity, logo, signature and Web site.”
They are wiping out history by getting rid of ‘Christian’ in their name. It is ridiculous anyway, because YMCA has become a brand name.

  11. Sid Ryan is now apologizing for his sorry utterances. Precious that. Would the fact that Buzzy Hargrove disagreed publicly with his views have anything to do with it?
Could it be he’s sorry to save his own sorry ass?

“Global Warming Horror Flick Put on Ice
How embarrassing is it when you produce a horror movie based on global warming and when the time comes to release it, the planet is experiencing some of the coldest weather in decades? Such is the case with The Thaw starring Val Kilmer. Filmed in Canada last summer, it should be ready for release by now but even though the trailer has been produced, no specific release date has been announced. Perhaps the producers realize how much of a laughingstock this movie would become if a movie based on the premise of global warming were released when their potential audience is freezing. Here is a description of “The Thaw” from Dread Central:
The Thaw will be produced by Anagram Pictures, the same team behind Andrew Currie’s badass debut Fido, with directing duties being handled by Mark A. Lewis. The story is about a group of ecological students who discover that a prehistoric parasite has come back to life after a woolly mammoth is defrosted and their race to stop the bug from infecting the entire world, even as they themselves fall victim to it.”

  16. (Via SWJ) Damien McElroy, Hamas using ‘underground city’ to launch attacks on Israel from Gaza
Hamas was using an “underground city” of tunnels to stage attacks on Israel forces as fighting raged on Wednesday in built-up parts of the Gaza strip. The tunnels were being used by mortar squads that are spearheaded the Hamas attacks on Israeli forces, defence officials told The Daily Telegraph.
The squads – led by fighters believed to have been trained in Lebanon and Iran – are based inside intricate tunnel networks that can be accessed from mosques, Hamas commanders homes and public buildings. In close combat fighting, Hamas operatives use the tunnel layout to lure Israel soldiers into ambushes where they could be captured or killed.
The complexity of fighting in urban areas, allied to the dangers of so-called friendly fire in confined spaces, ranks as the main reason Israel does not want a prolonged operation in Gaza…

  17. One-tenth of a penny
That’s how much MPs’ gas rates were cut after prices plunged
By TIM NAUMETZ The Canadian Press
    Thu. Jan 8 – 4:46 AM
OTTAWA — The steep plunge in gas prices has prompted the House of Commons to reduce the kilometre rate for MPs who use personal cars for business — by a mere tenth of a penny.
The House circulated an internal email announcing the drop this week under a formula that ties the Commons travel expense to a government schedule, which also went down.
But the minuscule drop to 54.9 cents per kilometre from 55 cents, which was effective Jan. 1, has critics fuming when they compare it with the 50 per cent plunge in gas prices over the last six months. The head of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation laughed when informed of the tenth-of-a-penny drop.
“You can’t make this stuff up,” said Kevin Gaudet, noting the MP kilometre rate was already at least five cents over the maximum rate the Canada Revenue Agency allows as a business expense deduction….”

Promises, promises: What happened to the diesel tax cut?
    01/08/2009
OTTAWA — Even if Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s Conservatives manage to hold on to power through to the end of this month and beyond, truckers shouldn’t hold their breath waiting for the Tories’ promised (and much-hyped) diesel excise tax cut.
Invited to give the keynote speech at the first luncheon at the Ontario Trucking Association’s annual convention, veteran CTV journalist Mike Duffy revealed that his sources in Ottawa don’t think slashing the tax is a priority for the minority government — and he said all this before the ill-advised coup attempt…Duffy also hinted that if the price of oil continues to drop, “there might not be the pressure to follow through (at all).”

  19. Because there are no social problems in utopia France Napoleon Sarkozy is solving the Middle East problem by authoring, along with Egypt(the country that closes it border with Gaza) a solution to the latest unrest in Gaza. Unfortunately they didn’t include Hamas but rather only Israel and the Palestian Authority(who Hamas expelled from Gaza). Tony Blair (ex-PM of Britain) was appointed by the (ineffectual) UN to settle the Middle East problem. Sarkozy, still fighting the 100 Year war, seems to be trying to usurp the Messiah role from the incoming Obama.

  20. Y’know, maybe I’ve been to hard on our erstwhile ‘conservatives’. Despite the Conservative’s tax hikes this year (CPP & EI increases are triple that of the decrease in personal amounts), it is reassuring to know that at the least anti-corruption laws are possibly maybe kinda deeply under consideration….

Oh. Dang. I thought it might have been about the Libranos, and the fact that a former Prime Minister was connected to persons who exchanged dubiously sourced cash in semi-private locations wrapped in brown paper.
Instead, it’s about a Con who actually took brown paper filled with cash in private locations while still in office. Now in an inquiry that cannot make legal findings, that cannot prosecute, and cannot generate findings that may be used as criminal evidence.
Well, at least Canadians will get to the bottom of it all, and justice will be completely served.
Just like the Gomery Commission achieved.

  25. “Unfortunately, we cannot remain neutral while the experts battle.”
    …-
“The Dangers of Disputing Global Warming Orthodoxy
Those of us who refuse to accept calls from proponents of global warming for drastic restrictions on production often confront objections like this:
Skeptics, blinded by fanatical devotion to the free market, ignore evidence. True enough, you can trot out a few scientists who agree with you. But the overwhelming majority of climate scientists view man-made global warming as a great threat to the world. The course of inaction you urge on us threatens the earth with disaster.
Christopher Horner’s excellent book provides a convincing response to this all-too-frequent complaint.
But how can it do so? Will not an “anti-global-warming” book of necessity consist of an account of scientists who dissent from the consensus? If so, will it not fall victim to the difficulty raised in our imagined objection? The book will pick a few favored experts to back up a preconceived political agenda.
Horner strikes at the root of this objection: it rests on a false premise. Contrary to what our objection assumes, there is no consensus of scientists behind global-warming alarmism:
Professor Dennis Bray and Hans von Storch polled climate scientists to rate the statement, “To what extent do you agree or disagree that climate change is mostly the result of anthropogenic causes?” … They received responses from 530 climate scientists in 27 countries, of whom 44 percent were either neutral or disagreed with the statement… Science magazine helpfully refused to publish the findings.
But do not the most prestigious bodies of scientists, such as the National Academy of Science and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, claim that man-made global warming is indeed a danger? Horner shows that matters are not what they appear. Environmentalists insinuated their way into the National Academy through “a special Temporary Nominating Committee for the Global Environment, bypassing normal election procedures”.

“Fr. Richard John Neuhaus slipped away today, January 8, shortly before 10 o’clock, at the age of seventy-two. He never recovered from the weakness that sent him to the hospital the day after Christmas, caused by a series of side effects from the cancer he was suffering. He lost consciousness Tuesday evening after a collapse in his heart rate, and the next day, in the company of friends, he died.
“My tears are not for him—for he knew, all his life, that his Redeemer lives, and he has now been gathered by the Lord in whom he trusted.
“I weep, rather for all the rest of us. As a priest, as a writer, as a public leader in so many struggles, and as a friend, no one can take his place. The fabric of life has been torn by his death, and it will not be repaired, for those of us who knew him, until that time when everything is mended and all our tears are wiped away.

There comes a point when violence is clearly the only answer. Peace most often throughout history is achieved through the application of relentless and superior firepower. Now is such a time for Israel.

A kick-ass website doesn’t just materialize out of thin air.
For an organization to have one, a significant investment is required — yet few people understand this fact.
Free Press columnist Larry Cornies may be one of the many folks who’s in the dark.
In his column about Orchestra London’s woes last Saturday, Cornies suggested the venerable arts institution should look to the web for salvation.
“Rather than regarding them solely as marketing tools, transform your websites into instruments of dialogue and accountability that are truly interactive,” he advised the embattled group.
A transformed website? That sounds cool.
Unfortunately for the people who run Orchestra London, there’s no magic button they can push on the computer keyboard that will upgrade their website instantly, making it a must-bookmark destination for arts lovers with a simple keystroke.
In fact, what’s needed is an investment in the form of staff, infrastructure and time.
A website is like any other venture: More resources mean a better product.”

  32. hardboiled: I think that the issue here is “brown bags”. Perhaps we should outlaw these — or the hotel rooms.
There is no evidence that Mulroney accepted money from Shiver while still in office. The big difference between Mulroney and the Chretien/Liberal/Gomery incident is that in the Gomery episode it is taxpayers money that disappeared. We don’t like bribes either, but so far there is no clear evidence for that — none that the RCMP could find anyway. Mulroney may not be squeaky clean, but the issue currently being investigated had to do with a business deal after Mulroney left office. (Something he presumably did not actually deliver on . . . at least according to Schreiber.)

  35. Liz J: “Sid Ryan is now apologizing for his sorry utterances.”
Well, he hasn’t apologized to me and I wrote him two mornings ago. ‘Haven’t heard a thing.
‘Anyone else notice that the leftist mob never acknowledge e-mails or letters? I’ve written Sid and I’ve written both McGuilty and Moron Miller — always politely, though usually more than a little “concerned” about their (non-)policies and being AWOL most of the time, and I’ve never once received a reply. (I once received a reply from Governor-General Michaelle Jean, when I objected to her not attending, on Canadians’ behalf, Queen Elizabeth II’s 89th birthday celebrations in London because of “a previous committment” to attend a play of her life by the students at Nelson Mandella School in downtown Toronto — couldn’t that have waited a day or two? — SIX MONTHS LATER. I don’t, actually, count that as a legitimate reply. You know the saying? Too little, too late.)
When you contact the Prime Minister’s office, you always get a response, usually within the week, sometimes within two.
My conclusion? Leftists simply aren’t civilized. And, further, they simply don’t care.
    What scumbags.

  36. Re the ruling that the Ugandan woman’s baby born in a plane over Canadian airspace, this is what Alykhan Velshi, communications director for Immigration Minister Jason Kenney, had to say: “Our government believes that Canadian territory — and, as a result, the full reach of Canadian sovereignty — extends to our airspace. This means that a child born in Canadian airspace is a Canadian citizen.”
I can see the logic of this, however, I hope it then means that women who are over eight months pregnant will be prohibited from flying. This is a lousy precedent, IMHO. What, now, is Canada’s obligation to this new “citizen” of Canada? Can the mom now apply for citizenship? What benefits and perques will accrue to this new Canadian that most of us “old” Canadians and our children aren’t eligible for?
All of this is getting pretty ridiculous — and on my loonie/toonie (looney tunes, alright) too.

This newly discovered video features Hampton singing to Kucinich followed with a cameo appearance by Jacobson (at left) and Avery (at right).
