I Told You So

Really. Why does anyone watch CBC, when they can have me?
SDA post-convention analysis from Dec.2, 2007;Post Mortem – in the final analysis, here is what happened. Despite a determined campaign to present a positive face to the nation, the Liberal Party’s decision boiled down to a selection determined by negatives.
The campaign of Michael Ignatieff gained early support, but eventually stumbled because a significant number of delegates were determined to vote for “anybody but”.
The campaign of Bob Rae gained later momentum, but eventually stalled because a significant number of delegates were also determined to vote for “anybody but”.
In the end they settled on the candidate who had staked out the highly coveted political ground known as “least offensive”.
So, there we have it.
The new leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, leader of Her Majesty’s Loyal Opposition, and citizen of France…

Mr. Anybody But.

    Ignatief In: Rae Out

Michael Ignatieff will be the next leader of the federal Liberal party.
The Canadian Press has learned rival candidate Bob Rae told confidantes during a teleconference call today that he is withdrawing from the race. It now rests with the party executive to find a way to install Ignatieff that meets with the approval of the majority of Liberal party members.
The Toronto-area MP will become the third Liberal leader in five years – possibly as soon as Wednesday’s caucus meeting. Ignatieff has been cool to the idea of replacing the Conservative minority government with a Liberal-NDP coalition. Current party leader Stephane Dion announced Monday he will step aside as soon as a replacement is chosen.

  2. ET, I could be wrong, because I am not bilingual, but I believe “Bloc Quebecois” translated into English is “Extortion Party”.

  3. “Kate calls it correctly a year ago.” Indeed, Kate has a pretty good track record of “calling it correctly.” Unfortunately, self-absorbed organs like the CBC are always more interested in people like Gwynne Dyer, who has an almost unbroken 40 year record of getting things wrong.
I recommend my daily regime: Listen to CBC Radio to get a sense of what Nanny is interested in and wants us to think, brew the coffee, the open up SDA for the real news and analysis.

  4. STEPHANE DION’S RETIREMENT DINNER At a dinner thrown in her husband’s honour, a man turned to Madame Dionand said, “Your husband has been such a promininent public figure withsuch a busy schedule. How quiet will retirement seem in comparison. Whatare you most looking forward to in these retirement years?” “A penis,” replied Madame Dion. A hush fell over the table. Everyone heard her answer yet no one knewwhat to say next. Stephane leaned over to his wife and said, “In Hinglish dey pronounce dat word, “Appiness.”

  5. “If we can afford $30b of stimulus, then we can afford a $300m election. That money will circulate around the economy. Why is spending $300m within the Canadian economy on an election not seen as $300m of economic stimulation?”
Because alot of that money is simply a transfer of the taxpayer’s cash back to political parties who argue for larger bureaucracies and budgets to control.
That’s euphemistically called a ‘circle jerk’.

  6. As a matter of fact, Kate, while you are not my only, you are my first source for news when I come home after work. CBC Pravda doesn’t even make the ‘B’ list.
It may be true, hardboiled, that much election money is tax dollars transferred to political farties, but they still spend that money don’t they? And isn’t spending money what ‘economic stimulus’ is all about? As I see it, large amounts of that money will spent on television, radio and ‘news’paper ads, not to mention all the printers printing up all those yard signs. Then there are pollsters of course, and I am pretty darn sure that quite a few ‘grassroots’ blog posters are paid political operatives, aka astroturf. I say this in all sincerity as a Concerned Christian Conservative (TM)

“””Dion doesn’t speak English very well , probably better than your French, but be sure that the man is very smart.””””
what does my speaking french have to do with anything, tho my great granny spoke fluently, I have NO reason to speak it
and if the man was smart and can’t speak both official languages well then he would not have run for party leader. You do know that it is basically at french (P trudeau’s) insistance that all gov’t employees speak both official languages
or maybe you could redefine smart for me????

  9. Oz , you said : The Canadian economy grew by 1.6% in the last fiscal quarter. That is a slowdown not a recession…
Cutting government spending and lowering taxes is a good start to help the economy. Borrowing money and throwing it around is not a plan to help the economy.
Since the election, actually 2 days after it , we have learnt that we are officially in a recession. Harper blew the $13 Billion surplus the Liberals had acquired for leaner times. And worse Harper has no plans to help the economy.
Why are you defending the Harper government so much. It’s a party of one. Where is the democracy you speak of ? One man does all the speaking.
On the other hand the coalition is very much a part of Parliamentary governments, up until the last elections Harper depended very much on the support of other parties to pass laws. Parties may support governing parties or get together in some workable fashion to defeat the governing party , even replace it until they decide that it’s time to call an election.
By the way Quebec does send politicians to Ottawa that are legitimate Members of Parliament. It was not very smart of Harper to stir English red necks against Quebecers. Even English Quebecers are very upset about that. He wants to reopen old wounds that gives him absolutely nothing in return. It won’t save his job if he doesn’t react to the world economic crisis. None of the parties are just going to sit there while he fiddles as the country burns down. But I hope that people will realize very quickly that it is not a good idea to breathe new life into Quebec separatism. Let the Block protect Quebec’s interests, as sure as hell you won’t. That is just as legitimate as Albertans sending their Block of conservatives to protect their interests , yes?
It think I would rather have a coalition for a new reason now— both leaders of the major parties are too tainted with foreign interests for my liking. I want someone totally and completely pro- Canadian to lead this great and wonderful country.
