  1. Here is a little rumour floating around the LibLogs:
Andrew Coyne is going to be hired as John Manley’s press secretary when Manley throws his hat into the ring to become the new Liberal leader.
Hmmmm. If so, Coyne may have to give up his cushy cushy big bucks to be the weekly “non biased” opinionator on CBC’s At Issue.

  2. from Manleys article. this would appear to open the door for Manley to step in. but it makes Borat Dion appear to be the dumbest $hit to ever cross the Ottawa river . he really is the demented Hobbit.
“Mr. Dion had seemed to accept responsibility for the defeat (although somewhat reluctantly), and should have left his post immediately” after the vote, wrote Manley, who is now counsel at McCarthy Tétrault LLP.
“Furthermore, in agreeing to the terms of the coalition with the NDP and the Bloc, Mr. Dion bound his successor to a controversial arrangement without even consulting any of the candidates to succeed him in the process, leaving them no option but to endorse it or break with him as party leader.”

  3. I’m going to speculate on this political scenario.
I’d say it began and was grounded with the NDP and Layton. His plan was to have the NDP take over the Liberal Party by first, a coalition, and then, moving more and more into control of the party. [You can see that it’s NDP by the force of the unions in all the meetings and their prepared signs.]
He grabbed Dion, reeling from his electoral defeat – and remember, Dion’s self assessment as a superior being (the professor in the seminar room)and his sense of entitlement to reverence, meant that he couldn’t understand the defeat. Layton made sure that Dion, who was made to resign by his party, still insisted on staying until May.
“Don’t worry, Layton told Dion – I’ll make you PM by that time”. [Layton’s next step would be to merge the parties with himself as leader].
They had to enlist the Bloc as their guarantor, and Duceppe, realizing that this effectively put the Bloc in full control of the Canadian parliament, of course agreed. Signed and sealed, without the Liberal caucus even knowing about it.
Harper found out about it and forced them to reveal their plan before their planned date of Budget Day..when they planned to come out with it in an overnight coup.
Notice that not one of these people has any interest in democracy, Canada, Canadians, the legitimacy of parliament, morality etc.
Now, the Liberals are in a bind. Caught between a rock and a hard place. If they too openly reject it, they risk alienating the NDP voters whom they still hope to entice; and they risk alienating any Quebec voters. If they too openly favour it – they risk increasing support for the Conservatives.
Their first step, therefore, has to be to get rid of Dion, which possibly, would nullify the agreement.
Rae, however, has moved in to take the place, not of Dion, but of Layton. That is, he’s moving in to take over the NDP party (by the Liberals).
The question for the Liberals then is: Do they want to be swallowed by the NDP-Layton, which was their fate under Dion. Or, do they really want to end the Liberal Party and become, de facto, part of the NDP – which they would, under Rae. Or, do they want to do as Manley suggests, and remain Liberal and rebuild the party.
Or? Ignatieff is on thin ice, skating cautiously around… Is Manley the answer?

  4. Does thegeneral public even know what this coalition has proposed?
Do they know that the NDP would have 6 of 24 Ministerial positions PLUS 6 more Parliamentary Secretaries.
That is a total of 12 NDP at the Cabinet table – being told all of the top secret information about our entire country, finances and security.
Not one single NDP member has EVER been in a federal cabinet. But, I’ll bet the Government Unions would love it as they would get everything they wanted from us sucker taxpayers.
Could Jack ever say no to the unions? Could Bob Rae?
Nope – they won’t want Manley – he is just way too non radical.

  5. ET:
Harper forced NOBODY to unfurl their coalition at the time they did.
    He merely provided the bait.
The coalition could have taken their lumps and waited for a more opportune moment to pounce, like after the budget.
The timing to unveil the coalition was entirely within the coalition’s control.
It was their own devils that made them do it … one that made it too irresistible once Harper dangled out the bait.

  6. “Andrew Coyne is going to be hired as John Manley’s press secretary when Manley throws his hat into the ring to become the new Liberal leader.”
    Ain’t going to happen.
Damn it was cold at the Winnipeg rally today.

  7. Kelowna; Grade twelve student Megan Ritz initiated and worked hard to bring her
    RALLY AGAINST COALITION
    to fruition and success.
All speakers and all present we’re obviously dead set against any Any ANY coalition involving the Separatists.
The Media was present throughout. What was their headline ?
Grade Twelve Student Organizes Meeting To Discuss The Coalition.
    ‘ discuss ‘ !!??
    Disgusting.

  8. From a mainstream media talking head today. I couldn’t believe it>
Something about how people accuse Stephen Harper of being a bully and a control freak but he is NOTHING compared to Stephane Dion.
Did that actually come out of the mouth of that CTV blind guy with the round head?
Yikes. His CTV Liberal masters will be thumping his knuckles over that one.

  9. Must admit that this coalition of the foolish does not look good on Iggy. Had he wisdom and not education he would have realized that the coalition idea would likely sink his political career should he even think about going along with it. His continued waffling only makes him look more pathetic and even less a leader. For all those who conservatives who think Iggy is going to come riding to the rescue of Harper’s minority government hahahahahaha.

  10. What the he** is going on !? Europe got the crumbling-coalition-flu also ?
[ We must ensure that our energy-intensive industry, which is driven by exports, is of course excluded from the trading of (emissions quotas) in order to make sure they are not disadvantaged on the global market. The way things stand, we cannot spoil our export chances and stand by while jobs in the chemicals, steel and other industries move to regions of the world where climate protection is less stringent than here.
–Angela Merkel, Deutscher Bundestag, 4 December 2008 ]
So, Angie is just a Fair Weather Friend of Global Warming.
[ In response to Chancellor Angela Merkel’s statement in the German Parliament this morning regarding the EU’s Climate and Energy Package, WWF Germany issued a scathing rebuke. “Chancellor Merkel is about to change from being a climate chancellor to becoming a climate problem,” WWF spokesperson Regine Guenther said. “Germany is blocking the EU’s ambitious climate targets in order to protects its non-innovative industries. As a result, Germany is endangering international attempts to protect the climate.

Or, perhaps her people have made it clear – they are not going back to the cave, Dave.
[ The scale of the popular movement and the force with which activists and agitators deliver their arguments is key to the success of any future international agreement to tackle climate change. We need the utopians and we need the agitators.
–UK Secretary of State for Climate Change and Energy Propaganda, Ed Miliband, 25 November 2008 ]
Just as we suspected all along. The Albert Gore way. All bluster and pie-in-the-sky. No science at all.
[ Sadly, I think that the situation at the BBC is now a serious one with respect to their uncritical reporting of climate change. Around the world, the grand narrative of ‘global warming’ is dying, strangled by the cold realities of the economic crisis, by world politics, by the fact that an increasing number of people are seeing through the exaggerations and distortions of much of the Green movement, but, above all, because of climate itself.
–Philip Stott, The Clamour of the Times, 4 December 2008 ]
Well, fancy that. The earth is not warming up so people don’t believe it is warming up. Who would have thought !

  11. Maybe there IS a coalition of sorts that Canadians would support:
Those Liberals and NDP who have no completely lost their minds and been blinded by personal power could cross the floor and work WITH the consrvatives to help the entire country weather the most serious world wide economic situation since the Great Depression.
They could participate with ideas and in the decision making. If at least 12 crossed tyhe floor that would give Canada a stable majority government for the next 4 years which would entice investments from around the world.
How about it? Would you all support of coalition of MP’s who are FOR Canada before POWER?

  12. manley bailed before the last leadership vote, now that fools who stayed have shot themselves in the foot, and can’t run a decent race anymore, he’s back
just have to wonder how many of the others that bailed will now return

  13. GYM: “manley bailed before the last leadership vote, now that fools who stayed have shot themselves in the foot, and can’t run a decent race anymore, he’s back”
He isn’t back yet, but if he does enter, he’ll look opportunistic, since he declined a few weeks ago. But nothing very unusual about that, of course.
But I really don’t think he’s going to do it. His article was no more than it appeared to be: good advice to his old party, intended to prevent the Liberals from destroying themselves. By expressing his thoughts in the G&M his opinions have a lot more influence and exert a lot more pressure.

  14. Marle:
They can cross the floor, but not deals.
In line with union rules, their seniority starts right behind the guys who were elected seven weeks ago.

  15. All about Liberal Fascism: **http://calitreview.com/303**
“What is the overall theme of Liberal Fascism?
If I had to pick a single overall theme in the book, I would say it’s to rectify the misunderstanding of what fascism is and to highlight the deep historical, ideological and emotional ties between progressivism (now called liberalism) and fascism. ”

  16. No deals is right. It is actually against the law to offer inducements over and above what every caucus member gets.
That is why Belinda crossing with the promise (bribe) of a cabinet position was so controversial. It was actually illegal but somehow , ho hum, that’s just the Liberals way.
Is it not also illegal for Layton and Dion to be offering bribes and inducements to Duceppe to secure his vote for 18 months? ^ senate seats, 1.2 BILLION MORE for Quebec, etc. etc.
    It all stinks.
But a straight floor crossing from a Liberal or NDP back bencher without any additional perks, positions, appointments or inducements for at least 6 months (I think that is the law() would be the best thing that could happen for Canada to have a stable majority government .
At that time the fixed election date law would kick in – October 2012 would be the next election and it would also give the Liberals a chance for real party renewal as they are sure going to need it.
How can any of us help make this happen? Talk to your MPs??

  17. Dear Kate,
I’m watching “Planet of the Apes”. The guy just kissed a cute female monkey and then a cute female human. I think I like the cute female human better. Am I racist?

  18. Ural,
It has come to my attention that you are apeophobic and will be sent to a re-education camp where you will receive sensitivity training.

  19. Jeffrey Simpson’s latest is interesting, though predictable & laughable: http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20081205.wsimpsonessay1206/BNStory/specialComment/home
Did Harper REALLY miscalculate? I heard an interesting theory today: Imagine that one of the Liberal Party’s leading lights heard about what Layton & Duceppe & [likely] Dion had planned “when the timing was right”. Why wouldn’t it be in their interest to slip this information quietly to Harper? Learning of the attempted coup at “some time” in the future, wouldn’t it make perfect sense to have this happen now, so soon after the recent election?
So if you’re Harper, you quite deliberately insert something into the financial statement that you know will push Le Cabal de Trois over the proverbial tipping point. And sure enough, it worked.
The one thing the Conservatives couldn’t have counted on was just HOW MUCH RAGE average Canadians have felt. Damn Right So IMHO!!!
Anyhow, it’s just a theory, but a might interesting one.
By the way, does anyone doubt that Jeffrey Simpson will be appointed a Senator the first time a Liberal PM gets into power?!?

  20. It’s interesting that PMSH has been known all along as pretty amazing strategist and now that this has happened, he’s regarded as having been surprised by it.
    It’s so obvious.
Subsidy cut = Liberal and Bloc outrage,
No striking = Dippers on the rampage
No surprise there, and on a money matter too.

  21. Dear Rally, you and me both!!!
You’ve all got to catch this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qEutatn0dqo
The videographer titled it “Mary Walsh’s First Attempt to Welcome Dion to the Stage”. My version would have been “Not Ready For Primetime 2: The Stephane Dion Chronicles”
    Here’s one brilliant comment:
Pro-treason rally=about 300 union members with professionally printed signs and a paid day off.
Pro-democracy rally=2000 individuals with hand made signs.
The polls don’t lie, 2/3rds of Canadians are strongly opposed to this attempted hijacking of the country. The Libs and NDP have finally thrown off the disquise and shown themselves to be power mad lunatics. Jumping into bed with the separatists and attempting to over-turning democracy when their political welfare check was threatened.

  22. Also, ET, just exactly how did the Conservatives obtain that conference call number and passcode? Was it provided to them deliberately?
Wasn’t the NDP making all kinds of huffing and puffing noises about bringing in the RCMP?

  23. MSM provides for your electation:
    “100 words
used to describe Stéphane Dion and the coalition
    Beset with flaws.
    Like a teenager proudly recording
    his first YouTube vlog.
A creepy coalition godfathered by backroom schemers.
Response looked like a hostage video.
Slap in the face to voters in the recent election.
    In a world of hurt.
    Where is Michael Ignatieff?
    Coalition is toast.
    Hard to believe Dion’s reputation
    could sink any lower.
    Fraying.
    Unwieldy.
    A coalition if necessary,
    but not necessarily a coalition.
    Disaster.
    Pathetic.
An expression of enormous optimism. (Substitute the word “delusion” for optimism.)
Talk about a collision, I mean collusion,
    oops, coalition.
No time for a Coalition of Losers.

  24. Question Period with the Geritol Owl ought to be interesting today, but I just cannot bring myself to watch any of the national networks.

  25. MJ wrote of John Manley: “He isn’t back yet, but if he does enter, he’ll look opportunistic, since he declined a few weeks ago. But nothing very unusual about that, of course.” No matter; if he wants the job, he’ll have plenty of friends in Canada’s Toronto Newspaper. I have heard him speak several times and he is arse-numbing dull.
Robert W. writes: “By the way, does anyone doubt that Jeffrey Simpson will be appointed a Senator the first time a Liberal PM gets into power?!?” Surely, that was signalled by the appearance of Simpson’s simplistic “Hot Air” in a prominent place in Dion’s cell-phone video.

  26. BTW, why is it now being referred to as the ‘Liberal-NDP Coalition’? I could have sworn I saw the Bloc-head shaking hands in the photo op last week? Does not mentioning the separatists mean we’ll somehow forget they are the ones holding the cards in this coalition?

  27. “”””Does not mentioning the separatists mean we’ll somehow forget they are the ones holding the cards in this coalition?”””
actually the real “ones” left out is the unions, my guess would be the as the fortunes of the auto industry started to seriously decline, they (the unions) seen a need to make sure Harper and the Neocons did not stay in government, thusly we saw a shift from support to the liberals from the NDP, this could have caused Juaques Layton to plot with Jilles and MAYbe Lizzy. Now there was a question about liberal financing during the last election, this angle may offer a possible answer. So I say lets find out were Buzzoff Hargrove is in all this, or maybe Harper went for a prorogue just so as to calm the waters while that matter is investigated???

  28. and as to Manley being back,. could Harper have informed Manley and he stayed out till the sh1t hit the fan, and now he can step in and “rescue” the party from the fools. Would give him an excuse to reverse his position with out looking to oportunistic or waffling.
and yes Harper would confer with someone like Manley

  29. I agree that PMSH may have cut the party subsidy in an attempt to force the coalition into the light. If it would have come out on the budget it could have been much much worse. I think the PM was going to half the subsidy as a sop as has been recommended it be reduced to. Jack has suffered from premature speculation in the past and may have done so again. Thats what happens when you get too excited Jack.

  30. Marie: “If [Coyne becomes Manley’s press secretary], Coyne may have to give up his cushy cushy big bucks to be the weekly ‘non biased’ opinionator on CBC’s At Issue.”
When has a conflict of interest ever bothered the CBC???!!!

  31. Here’s part of a post I made on another thread:
“Yes, the sleeping giant of ordinary, up-until-now-not-political Canadians, is finally stirring. The lefties aren’t too swift and will be taken by surprise: they’re not used to either having to justify their dirty tricks or to losing, and are going to become even more nasty than they already are. I’ve spent a lot of time in their company and, believe me, these people are dangerous—like a pit bull who’s had its bone taken away. ’All the more reason for decent Canadians, who play by the rules and put the country and the good of others before themselves, to give them a run for their—well, it’s usually OUR!—money.
“The Liberals’ Ponzi scheme was rudely interrupted by the Conservatives—how DARE they?—and the latest coup is the left’s desperate attempt to get their grubby hands back on taxpayer money, which they use as a personal bank account in order to promote their pet socialist causes. These corrupt leeches must be stopped!”
We can’t sit back, obviously, but an advantage we reasonable, feet-on-the-ground, Canadians have over our arrogant opponents is that they are the Emperors and we’re the ones who see they have no clothes.
While the pro-Canada forces live in the real here and now, the pro-treason (I like that!) forces live in virtual reality. They are surrounded by sycophants and toadies, in most of our institutions, including the delusional MSM, enforced by university speech code and HRC diktats, as well as activist judges. In their isolationist bubble, “far from the madd[en]ing crowd”, the Lib and Dipper traitors really believe their own lies. When push comes to shove, as it is now, hard reality is in a stronger position than virtual reality, which is a chimera (“fantastic or gross product of the imagination”, Canadian Oxford Dictionary).
I’ve debated looney-toon leftbats many times: I’ve never lost because, while I join the fray armed with FACTS, they arrive with only their uninformed and easily bruised FEELINGS: the look on their faces when they’re outmanoeuvred is a joy to behold! Me? I’m usually not invited back: lefties protect other lefties from reality every time.
Reality bites. Ready, set, go, you traitorous cowards!

  32. “Am I racist?”
No. But you are clearly bananas. If you feel the urge to pick salt off of your partners back, please call the local Humane Society and ask for a prescription pharmaceutical.
—- This message brought to you by Lancelot Link, Secret Chimp.

  33. Consider this about the leverage of the Bloc in this coalition… it has the power to direct most if not all of the economic stimulus (i.e. ludicrous spending) to be directed to Quebec.
Quebec weathers the economic storm in relative comfort, the rest of Canada foots the bill for another generation.
A specific reason this coalition undemocratic, bad for the country, and must be stopped.

  34. Talk about virtualy reality. I wrote Boob Rae and received this weasel response:
    [Begin quote]
Thank you for your message about what is happening in Parliament.
Mr. Harper has lost my trust as well as my confidence. He has refused to allow a vote on his disastrously partisan Economic Statement, which fails to disclose our true financial position as a country, takes money out of the economy at a time when we need stimulus, and attacked collective bargaining, women’s rights, and the democratic process in Canada.
The negotiated agreement between the Liberals and the NDP to form a coalition government as an alternative to Mr. Harper is intended to bring this “my way or the highway” approach to governing to an end.
It will ensure a strong package of economic stimulus, infrastructure investment, and direct support for working families and their communities at a time of economic difficulty.
Mr. Harper does not have a parliamentary majority. The coalition government will have a working majority for at least eighteen months with the assurance by the Bloc that they will vote confidence in the government for that period. The Bloc is not part of the coalition, and has neither asked for nor been granted any special consideration for this support.
I am running for the leadership of the Liberal Party and will continue to fight for a real alternative to Mr. Harper’s approach to governing and politics. His divisive, confrontational style threatens our ability to respond to the challenges of the day, and will divide Canadians more than ever before.
I see a better way, a Canada where political parties are not afraid to work together in the interests of a better economy and a stronger country.
Thank you once again for writing.
    Hon. Bob Rae
    MP Toronto Centre
    [End quote]
    Count the error . . . I mean, lies!
Re the economy: Theo Caldwell of Caldwell Securities was interviewed by the CTV bimbo—“hundreds [over a thousand, actually] are at the Ottawa rally”—yesterday and he said over and over how financially well placed Canada is among the G20: “Canada is in good shape,” he said. Did the bimbo point out that it’s HARPER who’s been at the helm for the past few years? Of course not. These people live in La-La Land.
La-La Land versus the “True North, Strong and Free”? Once the latter are on their feet and running, no contest.

  35. I read about the Greek situation at Fox News. When it didn’t say anything about who the rioters were except for “youth” I assumed they were from the Religion of Peace. Muslims should be outraged over this.

  36. To Liberal MPs everywhere, please save Canada the cost of an election – cross the floor. Or not.
Why would anyone doubt that this whole wonderful mess was planned by our Prime Minister’s office? There were bloggers here who predicted this outcome shortly after Flaherty dropped the bomb on Nov 27, and so far the only miscalculation might have been an underestimation of magnitude of success. Imagine actually awakening and focusing the Canadian electorate!
The big question now is, just how obnoxious, to the opposition, will the budget have to be to cause non-confidence resulting in an election? For instance, even if the political party financing element is reinserted in the budget, what can the “Coalition of Losers”, if they still exist, do about it?

  37. From Canadian Sentinel.
Mr. Dion’s office has fingered Liberal videographer Mick Gzowski for blame. Mr. Gzowski is the son of the late CBC radio icon, Peter Gzowski. His wife has worked as a language coach for Mr. Dion.
Sources familiar with the taping say that Mr. Dion’s office put Mr. Gzowski and others working on the video in an impossible position by failing to begin work on the video until after 6 p.m. on Wednesday, when it was supposed to run on network TV shortly after Mr. Harper’s 7 p.m. address.
videographer Mick Gzowski for blame. Mr. Gzowski is the son of the late CBC radio icon, Peter Gzowski. His wife has worked as a language coach

  38. Interesting read at http://www.primetimecrime.com/
“Democracy and accountibility are an illusion (in Canada)”
It is written by Palango who recently detailed some of the corruption and fraud prevalent in Ottawa in a book. The MSM media has apparently ostracized him. Unlike Liberal Golden Boy Scott Reid.
Gee, given Scott Reid’s recent uncivilized, bloodthirsty outburst in a Toronto city local newspaper, I’ll bet that there are other people who have pissed the Crooked Liberal Party du Canada off, and have also been threatened, harassed, or had attempted imtitmidation from the Liberals.
    Tarpaper

  39. Have a read of a column in the Ottawa Citizen today by someone called Joanne Chianello titled “The many sides of Harper”. Typical slagging and dissecting by all the usual experts on everything including psychoanalyzing.
There’s even an opinionated quote from one Don Newman, job description CBC political analyst , compared what they term Mr. Harper’s “excessive partisanship” to, quote, “someone with an excessive drinking problem who falls off the wagon with damaging consequences”. What damaging consequences? Damaging to the Liberals who are SELF DESTRUCTING with help from within?
Oh, the experts from all segments including the pollsters like Nicky Nanos all can really delve deeply into the psyche of our PM.
Amazing how they manage to get quotes and opinions from those they think will say exactly what fits their agendas.
Another gem form the article is a highlighted quote from a FORMER Tory party insider named Bob Plamondon: “I don’t think he’s a man who possesses a high level of emotional intelligence. He just doesn’t get it”. Consider the source of course.
The arrogance of theses people is beyond the pale. who the hell are they to be analyzing anyone’s character? Oh, forget, they’re “experts”.
