A proposal put forward by the Environmental Protection Agency…
…would require farms or ranches with more than 25 dairy cows, 50 beef cattle or 200 hogs to pay an annual fee of about $175 for each dairy cow, $87.50 per head of beef cattle and $20 for each hog.
The executive vice president of the Wyoming Farm Bureau Federation, Ken Hamilton, estimated the fee would cost owners of a modest-sized cattle ranch $30,000 to $40,000 a year. He said he has talked to a number of livestock owners about the proposals, and “all have said if the fees were carried out, it would bankrupt them.”
Of course it will. Has no one been paying attention?

But surely taxing dairy farmers will save the planet. Frankly I can think of no better way to save the planet, than to tax farmers.
It’s a great idea. I can’t think of anything the US could do that would be a better boost to our beef and dairy industries. I bet our ranchers would even accept COOL if the US implemented this plan.
Bankruptcy? Nonsense!
The farmers will simply apply for food stamps, welfare, Super Duper farm subsidy over and above the subsidy they already get, plus the new Fart Catching program that cuts your Fart Tax by 80% if you put biodegradeable diapers on your cows (Islamist lobby wanted that one) drop a couple bucks to their local DemocRat politician for some personal intercession with The One, and SHAZAM! They’re back where they started. In the hole for about $2 million to the bank.
Free market at work, American socialist style. Government taketh away with the Left hand, government giveth back with the other Left hand.
Reminds me of how Israel became a desert before the Return. The Ottoman Empire Satrap of Egypt, got it in his head to tax every tree on private lands. The inevitable occurred, which led to loss of rainfall.
Than erosion of precious soil. Total collapse of agriculture back to herding just animals.
Like microwave popcorn you have an instant wasteland of denuded barren hills.
All due to out of their minds elite wealthy bureaucratic cockroaches. Who have no idea of the real world anymore, or what it takes to run one.
I thought these farms were just for decoration and for hobbies. You mean this is where the packaged meat and bags of milk actualy come from, who knew about this.
Wolf Blitzer has never discussed this in the “Situation Room” so I flatly reject that these farms produce our real food.
Dave, I was shocked to hear that too. A couple of weeks ago, I was stunned to hear that turkeys are killed for Thanksgiving.
I always thought Mom made our turkey dinner out of flour. :O
I agree with Dave. Food comes from Fortino’s. Farmers just drive big machines real slow down the side of the road and block traffic.
As we see every time oil prices increase,it takes a dramatic increase in the price of an activity (driving) to see a fairly modest reduction in it; and (for the most part) there are pretty strict limits on how much people can (or are willing to) cut back. In the process of getting this modest reduction in behavior it usually comes at a cost of people becomming (amazingly) bitter towards the people who they blame for the price increases.
I personally wonder how long a government could survive if they tried to tax people at a high enough level to reduce GHG levels on the scale that Kyoto demands …
Eco-idiots. Their attacks on our necessities like food and fuel must be stopped. A small but vocal minority should never have been given the power to impose their environmental fundamentalism on the rest of us.

On the bright side, the amount of hunters will grow quickly. As will other self-sufficient behaviors. The other choice will be being forced to exist as vegetarians in cold dark apartments waiting for heat and light that are rationed by bureaucrats. Perhaps rat-burgers will become a black market delicacy in the cities.
Obama must be a total moron … guess what is the largest US lobby group ?
… auto industry ? Wrong.
… military industrial complex ? Wrong.
… the farm lobby !
” … The New York State Farm Bureau and the American Farm Bureau are the largest lobby groups in the state and the nation, according to Farm Bureau Dist. 1 Representative Phyllis Couture. …”
I came across interesting data that revels a existing Paradox by the young (18-29) environmentalists .
68% believe that protecting the environment is at least as important as a JOB
81% say their generation’s goal in life is to get RICH
If you don’t have a job or you lose your job you have a ~ Zero (0%) chance of been wealthy.
The MSM has a distinct responsibility to explain those inconsistencies to a generation that may be delusional. The CBC or CTV should create a scientific series “Climate Change “ (no holds barred), this must include “Practicing” Physicists & Geologists.
The alterative will be Ted Turners prediction that “We all will revert to Cannibalism”.
This would mean massive barriers to trade to keep out foreign beef and pork unless it comes from countries who institute similar fees. Otherwise U.S. farmers would never be able to compete and would go out of business. Which means:
1. The U.S. policy might in effect be exported to other countries (e.g., large neighbouring countries to their north).
2. The price of meat would soar.
The poor spend a far greater percentage of their income on food than do the rich, which means the poor would be poorer or have to resort to eating soy burgers (which is the same thing in my book).
Yeah somebody really thought that one through. Its like the clown that said to get the best people to run and organize things we have to pay more money. And we bought that and it gives us the three stooges in Canukistan and the BIG Three in America going to the government for more money!!!! In keeping with the Season as Scrooge said ” I think I’ll retire to Bedlam!”
Yep.Just when you thought you have heard everything.
Nice to see the Chinese head tax is alive and well.
Maybe we should propose to the bureaucratic organizations (GOC bureaus come to mind) that for every dollar they save in their budget, they get a bonus in their pension fund, for every dollar they go over, it gets deducted. I think these departments would run lean, mean and be extremely streamlined, especially when it comes out of their (our)pockets.
I drive around farm country a lot at work and I always see signs that read “farms feed cities”.
And I think to myself if you could find a way to stop doing that for a couple of months you would get a lot more respect.
Now THATS a program Manny can get behind!
“I always thought Mom made our turkey dinner out of flour. :O”
Nah, that’s so ’50s. They’re synthesized in tofu labs from the waste products of grow-ops.
“It makes perfect sense if you are looking for ways to cut down on meat consumption and recoup environmental losses,” said Bruce Friedrich, a spokesman in Washington for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.”
And there you have it. Someone has to be punished for the crime of eating meat, and it might as well be the farmers, because once they’re bankrupt, there won’t be any meat for anyone.
But we’ll still eat,’cause vegetable and grains grow themselves, don’tcha know?
Has no one been paying attention?
They voted obama in a lot of states, this’ll teach them.
The scientific illiteracy of these ecofreaks never ceases to amaze me. They talk about ‘smelly’ greenhouse gases, presumably referring to methane, and none of these dopes seem to realize that gaseous methane is a colourless, odorless, tasteless compound. They are mistaking gases like ammonia and hydrogen sulphide, which are not a greenhouse gases, for methane. I wonder if they are aware that the major ‘greenhouse gas’ is actually dihydrogen monoxide, which many of these clueless wonders have, according to legend, actually signed petitions to ban as a dangerous pollutant.
This will also mean no more cheese. Cheese is already around $100 bucks a lb. Sorry, Quebecers, no more camembert or roquefort pour vous. Or will there be exceptions under coalition rule?
So that’s where manny works! At the EPA. Can’t wait until they decide to tax the mice and rats running around. There should be a cull of eco-freaks!!
EPA is American. The coalition won’t cut off Quebec cheese but the Ontario dairy could take another beating.
Anything that saves another polar bear is good.
Do moose, elk, caribou, deer, wolves fox, polar bears, black bears brown bears, kodiak bears fart. And all the other wild animals? What about seals? who’s going to pay tax for them? Nobody.
Maybe we should kill them all. Imagine, no wildlife farts.
And if the farmers pay the tax, will the cows stop farting?
Save the planet! Bring in the fart police!
Since when has the US Environmental Protection Agency had the right to levey taxes? Did teh Anmericans rebel over taxation without representation or something?
And what will these taxes do? Provide teh EPA bureaucrats with bigger salaries and departments.
if they invoke fart taxes here in Kanada, I’m in trouble!!!!!
“all have said if the fees were carried out, it would bankrupt them.” Of course it will. Has no one been paying attention?

First Obama suggest bankrupting the coal industry. Now the EPA is suggesting bankrupting the dairy and related industries.
Great idea. Drive energy and food industries out of business, because lord knows modern civilization needs less of both.
F*cking leftards p*ss me off.
I just got back from the Vancouver Rally. I’ve never felt so proud to be a Canadian. I’ll have photos & videos up soon!
I’m now catching up on Roy Green’s 3 hours of coverage. In the 2nd hour Sask. Premier Brad Wall said something that I was not aware of. Listen to it at 9:50 here: http://cknwam.corusradionetwork.com/dynamic/dynamic_audiovault_process.asp?dt=20081206_12
Apparently the Coalition was all set to impose Cap & Trade emission restrictions at an ABSOLUTE amount of 1990 levels. He added that we’re currently 60% above those levels.
I can only hope that everyone appreciates the ENORMOUS significance of this!!!
Why hasn’t this been headline news and an investigative story of what the repercussions would be??????
I like the fat double-chinned decidedly not (where Harper has gone several times) in Afghanistan guy with the sign, “HARPER IS A COWARD”.
I can only hope that everyone appreciates the ENORMOUS significance of this!!!

You, I and most conservatives understand the significance of this. Unfortunately, a large portion of the Canadian electorate has been led to believe that something “needs to be done” about “the environment”, and that CO2 is a “pollutant”.
To your second query, it hasn’t been a headline story because most journalists in the MSN were doing everything in their power to spin the coalition in a positive light. They certainly wouldn’t bring up the issue of cap and trade, and the negative consequences of same.
As to investigative journalism, it sadly hasn’t existed in Canada for a long time.
One more time.
None of the methane and CO2 emitted from animals is being created by the animals.
All they are doing is returning the CO2 and methane to the atmosphere where it came from just hours, days or weeks previous when the ‘greenhouse’ gases were absorbed by growing vegetation.
If farm animals did not eat and digest the plant matter, then the ‘greenhouse’ gases would return to the atmosphere all by themselves.
Colin, thanks for your feedback! Of course, mine where rhetorical questions. Where I might dispute you is that I think a major reasons for Dion’s defeat in the election was his Green Shaft plan. More than a few Westerners cited that as a major one for voting against the Liberals.
Incidentally a meet a fellow SDA commenter, Glenn, down at the Rally in Vancouver today. He and I both reflected upon the fact that though it was just one block from CBC HQ in Vancouver, neither of us saw any CBC reporters. Maybe they were undercover!
I’ll get onto compiling my photos & videos now!
“Do moose, elk, caribou, deer, wolves fox, polar bears, black bears brown bears, kodiak bears fart.” I doubt it but if they do I owe my hunting buddy an apology. 🙂 I’ve always blamed him for the smells around the campfire.
btw, this sounds like a great idea for a research grant: Go into the woods on a regular basis and try to hear/smell a deer fart.
I believe it was the week before the election in October that the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association made available both the Conservative and Liberal Ag. policies.
I read them and lo and behold what was part of the Liberal Green Shift plan…..an emmissions tax on ALL livestock (including horses).
But on a happier note the Green Shift would have you spend a quarter million dollars for a manure digester to make electricity you will get tax credits for. Ya right. Make electricity for 25 cents a kwh and sell it for 5.
The same damn nonsense is part of Dion’s Green Shift.
Harper is the man on these back roads!!
Of course, mine where rhetorical questions.

I have a weakness for answering rhetorical questions. 😉

Your late,TC. I all ready put in for that grant 2 years. No go.BUT,I could get a grant to figure out how house flies walk upside down on ceilings!
And now Gwynne Dyer Straights is fear mongering.
Says climate change will cause food shortages – leading to war.
Climate change is causing these high grain prices, you see …. er … maybe not. Bio fuels are. Or, did.
how do you spell zimbabwe way wie w???? what the hell, we will look like that and be as broke if the socilaist, global warming, control, all people all the time idiots get complete control. its seems they are succeeding. someone better inform dyer that the people will go to war long before that.
You mean Al Gore didn’t think this up too?Actually he probablly started the rumour in the hope it will become a reality. Then he can add “animal taxation collection” to his “carbon credits for sale ” agency. And how about pigs and sheep and goats and chickens? Might as well tax all the sources of live animal protein. It reminds me of the city folk who move to the country and then complain about animal smells. It will all come about by itself when low prices force farmers out of business anyway.
