  8. McCain/Palin had no message except for “fear Obama”.
    As time passed, respected and calm voices like Powell and Buffet supported Obama, Obama looked more presidential publicly, and that message resonated only with the hard-core republicans. Whether it was true that we should fear Obama time will tell, but certainly that message was no longer relevant by the second half of the campaign.
    But the Republicans offered nothing in its place. McCain certainly did not succeed in showing in what importantly, truly important, ways he differed from Obama.
    So what chance did the republicans have after 8 years of a mostly unpopular president (rightly or wrongly), as an economic tsunami poured onto the world?
    None. Zero. It was surprising they did as well as they did, frankly.
    If they don’t wise up and rediscover that conservativism does not mean liberalism with jingoist patriotism, anti-abortion, and pro-gun planks, then we will have a LOOONG time with Obama and his ilk.

  9. On topic, the article highlights the some key reason Obama won and some reasons he did not achieve the historical landslide predicted by the MSM. The time was right for a change and Mccain was unworthy of winning. The attention Palin recieved,good and bad, highlighted the ongoing division between ideogloy. Without the vote of upper middle class voters Obama could have lossed this election. After his first 4 years there will be no upper middle class so his chances will be dimished . Bobby Jindal is a rising star,Palin will be more polished and people will have decided that people who do not actuallOn topic, the article highlights the some key reason Obama won and some reasons he did not achieve the historical landslide predicted by the MSM.   12. His backers spent huge amounts of money to shift a few per cent of the indie voters that gave him victory after eight years of Bush. McCain was lackluster and slow to react with the MSM savaging him and Sarah Palin 24/7. Notice how nasty Obama got when real questions were asked. Some victory.
    Jimmy Carter+ is back. The world is becoming ever more dangerous. Don’t worry, be happy.

  15. Now that I’ve actually read the article I can maybe offer a comment on it:
    Honestly I thought that any Republican candidate would be doomed to failure, seeing how the outgoing candidate is almost universally loathed. In fact on that factor alone I would have expected any republican candidate to poll somewhere in the ‘teens. I’m somewhat amazed that McCain did as well as he did. I say “somewhat” because I often forget that Americans are quite a bit more conservative than Canadians and their view is not that of Canada or the rest of the world for that matter.

  17. Getting angry when real questions were answered was his strategy and it worked. Challenging him would have meant the media would have had to prepare a defence against charges of racism every time they dared do their jobs. So instead, on the eve of the election, Charlie Rose and Tom Brokaw went on TV and seemed proud of the wondrous fact that “we really don’t know that much about Barack Obama, do we?” They made that fact sound honorable.
    No one dared ask him what he meant when he said the Constitution was fundamentally flawed, that there was a problem with limited government, that he wanted a “living constitution” that broke “free from the essential constraints placed on the Constitution by the founding fathers.”
    No one pointed out that this so-called resurrection of Kennedy wanted people to demand what the government must do for you rather than ask what you can do for your country.
    Obama is as far from Kennedy’s notion of the relationship between the citizenry and its government as America is from Europe’s idea of governments and their subjects. Compared to the European idea, Kennedy’s true heir was Reagan. Yes, Reagan, who said: “Governments don’t have citizens: citizens have governments.”
    But if McCain had just said no to the bailout and insisted that Bush and Paulson and Bernanke were wrong, he would have won. The vast majority of Americans were opposed to the bailout. McCain had the issue to show that it was his opponent who wanted to follow in the “failed policies of the Bush administration,” not him. More importantly, he would have been right. But apparently McCain doesn’t really believe in the invisible hand of the market, doesn’t believe or understand that “social responsibility” is built into the design of the market and need not be added later and so he wasn’t the right guy. The real question is how perverted is the culture and how much of the pavement will flying cyclers have to eat before they wake up?

  18. PS: The GOP doesn’t need a “signature new idea” or “fresh faces.” What it needs is someone who believes in personal responsibility, a free market and limited government. It works. Why change it?

  19. The results (voting and fund-raising) show that the Democratic Party remains a coalition of the rich and their dependents (not unlike the LPC). It always amazes me that we continue to hear about the Republicans (and the CPC)being the party of the rich and big business.

    Most of the MSM predicted an Obama win of 310~ electoral votes. That’s hardly a landslide, and it’s certainly not a historical landslide. In fact, I’d argue that the majority of media outlets downplayed Obama’s lead while several blogs (Nate Silver’s, for instance) predicted the outcome much more accurately. I watch CNN, Fox, MSNBC, and other major news networks… if those don’t represent the MSM, I don’t know which networks do. And I never saw them call for a historical landslide… could you enlighten me?

  26. As many of you know, I’ve had my share of
    trouble with these nappy headed jungle bunnies.
    This reminds me of a trip I took to Algeria back
    in the day.
    A old war buddy of mine had just been discharged
    by the French Foriegn Legion and he had a few
    scores to settle with just the sort of lower
    human form this Obama has proven to be. Now I
    don’t think It would be wise top tell you the
    rest of this story but lets just say, where
    there’s a will there’s a way.
