I have some experience in verification systems. There are only two reasons for this being left as wide open as it has
1) Incompetence
2) Intentional
There are very smart people running th eObama campaign, so it isnt incompetence. Especially now that it is an issue.
It is fairly safe speculation, I am not in the room so I cant say it with direct knowledge, that this is about intentionally NOT verifying contributors. This is doen for a few reasons
i) To enable international contributors
ii) To enable multiple contributions
iii) To hide other types of contribution fraud.
All with one goal, maximize, and i mean maximize the fundraise. Obama has enough money for a second run at the white house without having to raise a dime. In business this is the equivalent of a huge IPO and is called “f**k you” money. If obama doesnt have to raise money, then he can do whatever he pleases, to a greater or lesser degree, without having to please larger donors, who are usually more conservative in their approach.
What I like about the US system is Obama will have maximum 2 years before there he has to face voters again, indirectly through house and senate elections. If he screws up then the both will flip back to GOP control and the US system regains some balance.
2008 to 2010 are going to be very interesting times.

The GOP ship is sinking fast. The rats that could have made it to dry land have already done so. The remaining rats know their fate, so like a suicide bomber they do what they’re programmed to do. They use transference to compare the object of their hatred to the most despicable people in history. They’re so frustrated they even make up outlandish conspiracy theories to console each other. This miss-guided anger and frustration only accomplishes one thing…It puts a smile on the faces liberals and democrats everywhere.

Inspired me so much I just had a movement of my own.
I feel do much better for “joining” a movement.
The first name I would search for would be Saul Alinsky. This whole “Acorn style” operation seems organized to overwhelm any “by the rules” attempt at detailed scrutiny which harks back to Alinsky’s guiding principles.
It never fails to amaze me:
Truth is presented, and a liberal calls it anger and frustration.
It pains me tremendously to agree with someone like “liberal Ron”, even in part.
I do not think it useful, in the nex week, but especially in the long run, to bring the discussion down to this disgraceful level. And if the Democrats are doing it, then we have to be better than them, not wallow in the gutter with them.
One of the main reasons that McCain will lose this election is that his supporters increasingly has no substance to offer the American electorate beyond trying to frighten then with the thought of Obama as president. How different is his vision, his policy, really than Obama’s? Has he even articulated it clearly? Yes, he is a better man, but somewhere recently I have read the very accurate quote that voters do not pick on the basis of what someone has done, but on the basis of what they think they will do.
Add to that his age, his less than dynamic persona, the entire weight of the US media stacked against him, and the very unfortunate choice of VP candidate (which I did speak against on the day she was selected on this site), and it is clear that he cannot win this election. And should not.
In the beginning of the campaign there was more substance and less ugliness, and I applauded him for that, though I feared he could not overcome the obstacles stacked in his path. But seriously, how likely was any republican to beat any democrat after 8 years of Bush’s poor national and international performance, as the worst economic disaster in a generation evolves on his watch? A truly superb, brilliant, exciting republican candidate might have been able to do it because Obama is actually a pretty weak candidate. But I know of no such person right now in the republican party.
McCain at first seemed to be taking the high road, but as the campaign has gone on, and more or less since Palin joined it, the discourse has gone straight downhill.
The republicans need to use the next 4 years to rebuild and find themselves, or we are going to see a generation or democratic domination much like the manner in which the republicans mostly dominated since 1980. While 4 years of Obama won’t destroy the US, a generation of Eurocentric democratic leadership very well might.
The republicans need a Stephen Harper now, not Sarah Palin 2012.
