Reader Tips

Good evening ladies and gentlemen, welcome to SDA Late Nite Radio. Tonight, for your delectation and pursuant to our Sunday night classical music show, here courtesy of listener Occam’s Carbuncle‘s recommendation is Mieczysław Horszowski live at Carnegie Hall, at age 97, performing two works by Frédéric Chopin, his Nocturne in Eb major, op. 9 no. 2, and his Etude in F minor, op. 25 no. 2 (1990, 7:11). (Any of you who were actually brave enough to listen to last night’s Stardust show might want to double-clutch before attempting to shift gears into tonight’s show, I know I did 😉

Your Reader Tips are, as always, welcome in the comments.

  1. You may find these videos of the ATLAS experiment, one of the five detectors in the Large Hadron Collider project at CERN, to be interesting, PiperPaul: part 1, part 2, and part 3. Consider the absurd degree of complexity of this instrument, especially as explained in parts 2 & 3, and then think, just think, of the P&ID drawings. Now, now we’re havin’ fun ;-!

  2. Wow, way cool, Vit! Didn’t Al Gore have such detailed explanatory animations?
I’d been trying this experiment myself at home by smashing two rocks together, recording it all with a high speed digital camera. Time to give up.

  3. Vit — now that’s a pet peeve of mine. As an anal retentive industrial instrument mechanic, it always bugs me when people say P&ID *drawing*. Since P&ID stands for “process and instrumentation diagram/drawing, the extra “drawing” is redundant. Aeeeeeiiii!!!
Why I make such a fuss about this is a mystery, since P&IDs are almost always hilariously wrong, and have no relation to reality, anyway.

  4. If the LHC does not find the Higgs Boson will the plans the Superconducting Super Collider be dusted off?

  5. Typical national news tonight. Stephen Harper issues an apology to sikhs in Surrey prior to his appearance at the summer BBQ at Senator St. Germaine’s.
Nothing about his speech appeared on national news. Nothing about the CPC’s bill to give British Columbians proper representation within the lower house. Nothing about the CPC’s proposed savings account (akin to the RRSP from many moons ago) which won’t be touched by the taxman…ever.
CPC car flags went on sale for the first time ever. Contact your local EDA (riding office) to get yours – they should be available across the country within a month or so.

  6. Gen. Lee Wright, Harper may have to re-apologize in the HOC as some Sikhs have suggested. Never satisfied that the PM is apologizing on behalf of us for the actions of OTHERS and to them directly, they want the whole world to hear it on National TV.
When it comes to covering the Prime Minister of Canada doing his job, the MSM are not interested in covering it unless it’s negative. They do not cover the important stuff. Just as they shamelessly ignored his great performance at the Vimy Memorial Services. The media just couldn’t handle it, relegated it to page four, that was a disgrace to all who served and died. That’s how deep the media have sunk for their political biases.

  7. Wonder how many of the Taliban killed would Senator Romeo Dallaire classify as “child soldiers”?

Jewish Defense League stages demonstration at Arab Federation Building.
Defiant chants of “Condemn Muslim Terrorism Now” and “Jewish Blood Is Not Cheap” could be heard in the streets of downtown Toronto, on Thursday afternoon, July 31st, as 30 members of Toronto’s Jewish Defense League staged an angry demonstration in front of the offices of the Canadian Arab Federation. Responding to the dramatic rise in anti-Semitic attacks on Jews by Muslims in the Toronto area, Meir Weinstein, director of the JDL in Toronto, said, “The abject silence on the part of the Canadian Arab Federation in the face of vitriolic attacks on Jews by Muslim perpetrators is tantamount to tacit approval of anti-Semitism and gives a green light to others who would entertain the notion of attacking Jews.”
Weinstein was specifically referring to an attack that occurred on November 3, 2006, when a Jewish teenager and her three friends were viciously assaulted at a Toronto train station by Mustafa Taj, 21, who was recently sentenced to one year in prison by provincial court Judge Bill Cummings, who ruled that the attack was racially motivated.
According to a report in the Canadian newspaper, The Calgary Sun, dated July 24, 2008, on November 2, 2006, “Taj approached the group (of teenagers) around 10:45 pm, and asked ‘who’s Jewish.’ Nichola Cordato, then 16, stated ‘me’ and Taj grabbed her and said, ‘I’m Muslim and hate Jews.'” The report continues: “He then slapped her in the face and pullled her hair before her friends, Jessica Motta, Kayla Hungle and Daniel Ball attempted to intervene. Hungle attempted to prevent Taj from further attacking Cordato and was punched in the face by him. Motta then intervened and was punched in the face, pulled to the ground by her hair and kicked in the stomach and ribs. When Ball tried to stop the assaults, he was thrown onto the C-Train tracks where he fell onto his back and was spat upon by Taj. During the melee, Taj called Cordato a ‘Jewish piece of (crap).'”
Prosecutors Ken McCaffrey and Inayat Jetha had sought a sentence of up to two years for the hate crime. Prior to sentencing, McCaffrey called into evidence a similar assault perpetrated by Taj a year earlier when he approached a black male at an LRT station and assaulted him.”

  10. I am glad that Harper apologized to the Sikhs.
I am glad that it backfired.
I am glad that CBC is showing it over and over, because I’m quite sick of the apologies and the sense of entitlement that immigrants to this country now have. I hope other Canadians get fed up too.
Don’t like it here in Canada? Then LET the door hit your ass – hard – on the way out.

  11. That’s exactly why the CBC is carrying the apology, they’ve polled and found apologies to be unpopular.
Those who come here after some slight or wrong by previous, recent or long ago, actions of a Canadian government, apparently aren’t too concerned, they still come here and lap up the goodness of the Country. Life here is far superior to the places they fled.
We can’t truly apologize for others, we can say we don’t agree with them, and condemn such actions as wrong and case closed.

While Arbour was hobnobbing with anti-semites, butchers and anti-democratic forces from around the world, Iranians were being prepared for public hangings. Arbour was reported by the Islamic Republic News Agency as having “expressed pleasure with being at the NAM meeting and described Iran’s representation office in the UN in Geneva as “very good.” In an unusual move, the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights has so far neglected to put her official statement on their website.
The day after Arbour left Iran the government felt sufficiently buoyed by their UN stamp of approval, that they executed 21 prisoners. People are executed in Iran for charges like “enmity against God” or “being corrupt on earth.””

    By Sandy
My original article about the Harper government being the longest running minority was posted at Jack’s Newswatch on June 22, 2008. With revisions, here it is again.
Fellow conservatives, let’s celebrate the fact that, in spite of opposition “gotcha” politics and a Liberal opposition too weak to take the government down (by sitting on their hands or not showing up for parliamentary votes), the Harper government is the longest sitting Canadian minority since the election of 1921.”

  14. I suspect someone already submitted this a while ago (and/or Kate already posted on it), but I just found this cool site comparing daily sea ice on the North Pole. Seems like we have more now than this time last year, which sure isn’t what most people I talk to think.

  15. Sixteen Chinese soldiers/police killed today in an attack by terrorists. No one has taken responsibility for the attack but the smart money is on the ‘religion of peace’. I have the feeling that this will be the bloodiest Olympics yet. BTW,does anyone have any idea how many islamic countries participate in the actual sporting events? I highly doubt they will be walking away with many female medals, esp.in the aquatic sports.

  16. MSM is biased to the left-Liberal Party?
Angry has the bias documented in a fine blog entry:
    “Stephane Dion Election Cycle”.
Angry enumerates 5 stages; plus, an abbreviated “Cycle”.
Here, Angry shows the MSM’s obsessive fixation on the word: election, er election.
Surely the MSM’s left-Liberal obsession, on behalf of Citoyen Dion-Liberals, with the “Stephane Dion Election Cycle” is da proof of the definition of insanity as propounded by Einstein:
“doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”
Yes, the MSM is the mouthpiece/strumpet of the Liberal Party.

“Stephane Dion remains committed to cycling
You might think I’m talking about Liberal Party leader Stephane Dion’s green credentials — using a bicycle and such.

  17. When are the Sikhs going to apologize to US, for bringing their animosities and vendettas to Canada?
When are they going to apologize to US for the worst air disaster in Canada’s history and the gazillion$ of dollar$ the investigation has cost the Canadian taxpayer.
When are they going to apologize to US for the thuggery and criminality that’s been brought to their new country by a significant segment of their population?
Perhaps they’d like to pay back what’s been taken from Canadian taxpayers rather than carp and complain about an apology our government has made to them.
The other alternative is to leave Canada. No one’s forcing them to stay.

    “The battle of the ghosts
Like the tolling of a deadly clock, yet another missile struck al-Qaeda in the Pakistani border area. “One of al Qaeda’s top chemical and biological weapons experts was killed in an air strike by a CIA pilotless drone,” according to CBS News. Abu Khabab Al-Masri is dead, according to al-Qaeda website. Several other men were killed in the strike. However, al-Masri’s name has still not officially been taken down from the Rewards for Justice website. The US had not officially confirmed his death as of this posting.
While the title of “top chemical and biological weapons expert” may evoke images of Dr. Evil-style laboratories, the more prosaic description of al-Masri would be “bombmaker”. The LA Times says al-Masri was behind the failed post-September 11 plot to blow up airplanes en route from Britain to the United States, an event now memoralized in the restrictions on passenger-embarked bottles of fluids.
The innovative techniques required special instruction. Masri envisioned his operatives injecting the liquid explosives, a highly concentrated hydrogen peroxide mix, with a syringe into the false bottoms of innocuous containers such as sports drinks, sneaking the components aboard and assembling bombs after takeoff.
The Associated Press also credits al-Masri with training the suicide bombers who attacked the USS Cole. He preferred to be the mentor, often through a training staff who acted as cutouts. The LA Times sources believed that counterterrorism had chopped off al-Masri’s tentacles and ground down his networks. With the decimation of his henchmen, the master bomber was forced to venture out himself and train volunteers who were often of indifferent quality.”

  20. Frank J. Gaffney, Jr., Dangerous Disarmers
Wednesday marks the 63rd anniversary of the destruction of Hiroshima by an American atomic bomb. For most of us, if we think of that occasion at all, it will be a passing thought – a distant historical fact, probably noted with sympathy for those killed or wounded in the attack. Perhaps we will recollect – as we should – that the unprecedented destruction wrought by a single weapon helped bring World War II quickly to a close, obviating the need for an invasion of the Japanese home islands that would have been infinitely more destructive, for both the inhabitants and for our forces.
Others intend to observe that anniversary very differently. The event and its victims will be exploited as props in an international anti-nuclear weapons campaign. Ironically, under present and foreseeable circumstances, those who seek to “ban the bomb” would likely clear the way for the next terrible global conflagration…

Dinosaur – I was thinking about that myself. There was a quote by Brian Mulroney that I wanted to include in the blog post, but couldn’t find the source.
He said, in reference to the G-7, that given the relative size of the economies, they could just fly George HW Bush around from capital to capital, and they would accomplish as much as they would flying around the whole lot of them.
So too with Kate. Some of us are on this list entirely because of Kate. There’s no left wing equivalent. Matthew Good got me 400 hits, Canadian Cynic about 100, Garth Turner about 30. But SDA, I don’t know how she does it, but she does it, and well. Any link from her guarantees you 1,500 hits. I have a lot of respect for her. And not grudging respect, but legitimate respect.”

‘Here are two brother countries, united like a single fist,” said socialist Hugo Chavez during a visit to Tehran last November, celebrating his alliance with Islamist Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Che Guevara’s son Camilo, who also visited Tehran last year, declared that his father would have “supported the country in its current struggle against the United States.” They followed in the footsteps of Fidel Castro, who in a 2001 visit told his hosts that “Iran and Cuba, in cooperation with each other, can bring America to its knees.” Ilich Ramirez Sanchez (“Carlos the Jackal”), for his part, wrote in his book L’islam revolutionnaire (“Revolutionary Islam”) that “only a coalition of Marxists and Islamists can destroy the United States.”
It’s not just Latin American leftists who see potential in Islamism. Ken Livingstone, the Trotskyite mayor of London, literally hugged prominent Islamist thinker Yusuf al-Qaradawi. Ramsey Clark, the former U.S. attorney general, visited Ayatollah Khomeini and offered his support. Noam Chomsky, the MIT professor, visited Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and endorsed Hezbollah’s keeping its arms. Ella Vogelaar, the Dutch minister for housing, neighborhoods, and integration, is so sympathetic to Islamism that one critic, the Iranian-born professor Afshin Ellian, has called her “the minister of Islamization.”
Dennis Kucinich, during his first presidential campaign in 2004, quoted the Koran and roused a Muslim audience to chant Allahu akbar (“God is great”), and he even announced, “I keep a copy of the Koran in my office.” Spark, youth paper of Britain’s Socialist Labour party, praised Asif Mohammed Hanif, the British suicide bomber who attacked a Tel Aviv bar, as a “hero of the revolutionary youth” who had carried out his mission “in the spirit of internationalism.” Workers World, an American Communist newspaper, ran an obituary lauding Hezbollah’s master terrorist, Imad Mughniyeh.

  25. Spengler, Israeli pre-emption better than Islamist cure
The critical mass of three Islamist states – Iran, Turkey and Pakistan – threatens to create a regional upheaval that can be contained only by wars of attrition. The outlook is grim, not least because the US State Department is repeating in Turkey the errors that helped bring Islamist governments to power in Iran and Pakistan. Two weeks ago (Turkey in the throes of Islamic revolution?) I accused the world press of ignoring an Islamist coup in progress in Turkey. There is more to say on this score, but America’s whipsaw over Iran is even more alarming…
Israel is the only player in the region with the perspicacity and power to stop the slide towards regional war. The Jewish state may not have the capacity to eradicate Iran’s nuclear development program, but it almost certainly has the means to set it back for a number of years. The forthcoming resignation of feckless Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert opens all options for good and ill. If Israel can find a von Schlieffen, it still might be able to interrupt the slide towards political Islam in the region. If Israel fails to act, the near-certain outcome will be regional war on a scale dwarfing the Iran-Iraq war of the 1980s.
