  1. Two books not remembered (or even ever read) by the MSM: ‘Chicken Little’ and ‘The Boy Who Cried Wolf’.

  2. I watch with joy and amazement as Sask. grows and prospers at a very high speed.
What a difference a day makes if it is election day in Sask.!!
The Dark Dipper days will soon be a bad memory in the minds of the people who live in what will soon be a land of business and prosperity.
I think Kate does speak for the people of Sask. and may they never forget that this website had a HUGE influence on the election that turned things around.

  3. Jemma 54 – How did the election increase the international price of hydrocarbons that much of the new found wealth is base on? How did the election start the mass return of our children from the West causing the house price explosion before the election? You can’t attribute our present bounty to a change in government.
I agree that there is probably an attitude change in the population in general, but must tell you that one fear I had was that the growing good times would prevent a meaningful and thoughtful election and lead to buying our votes with our own money.
I still live in fear that a new government finding itself in as good a position as this new government finds itself will do what all the oilmen did before NEP. I fear they will spend like drunken sailors. They cannot count on it lasting forever. They cannot start megaprojects. They have to stand up for the Confedration of Nations (remember that Canada is a confederation) and make sure that provincial rights are protected and enforced.
We’re doing really well economically now as a Province. But where has all the talk about the equalization formula gone? Do we remember how angry we got over that apparent turnabout. Does the fact that we have money now make what happened then right?
We must continue to hold this and all governments to proper principles. Yes we have a different government now. And it has different approaches to governing. But we must continue to watch and can’t have our ability to think be overcome by the good times we’re in. This is the time to make hay.

  4. Day after day, new real-world evidence indicates that, really, nothing is being done to even attempt to reduce emissions.
All the measures we’ve been hearing about, like cap-and-trade, emissions trading credits, carbon taxation, etc… are all about money, money, money, and are seen by the likes of Gore and Dion as ways to enrich themselves or to raise general revenues so as to be able to expand the social welfare state apparatus and deepen the problem of dependence on left-wing governments like the Democrats and Liberals.
The reasonable person, day by day, with each observation of what’s really happening/not happening, will conclude with ever-greater confidence that the whole AGW/CC thing is a big pile of Green Shift and that the likes of Gore and Dion could actually care less (albeit not much!) about the environment, the future of the planet and the future of species, including Homo Sapiens.

  5. Apologies if this appears twice…

Damned if I’m going to sacrifice a camping holiday for saving a few tonnes of carbon dioxide.
    That’s my annual vacation
Dion is doomed by his own Green Shi*t

  7. rroe – the ‘equalization’ thingie was a Culvert ploy to keep the people of Sask dependant on his Dipper gov’t for their livelihood.
Sask., like the Yukon, has always had resources. Sask., like the Yukon, was living under false pretenses. As a former resident of the Cypress Hills, I am delighted to see Sask. people getting off their knees. I hope you will take the time to cast an eye on the ‘park’ (The Yukon) that you support through taxes – a ‘park’ with plenty of resources, hobbled by a Dipper mindset.
The Yukon gets big transfers from the feds to keep it’s luxury loving government workers happy. The new people do not want production because if people were independent the government would not have the power of the purse.
What is YOUR problem rroe, did I detect envy in your post? That could be the little greenie in your post. Are you a gov’t employee who is not so smug as you were before?

  8. When Kyoto is good for something besides tourism in Kyoto Japan, I’ll consider it. Besides that, it just another bit of babble out of Suziki’s mouth. Y’Know, if I was Suzuki Motor Co, I’d be suing Dave baby to keep his mouth shut. It’s gotta be killing their sales, I know I’d never buy on in case someone saw me on/in it. If W was Suzuki’s lawyer, the suit would have already been launched.

Just another die-hard socialist who, after months of denial, has grudgingly come to the realization that the “natural governing party” has been unceremoniously turfed. What is even more confounding is that the sky has not fallen, medicare has not been abolished, SaskPower has not been privatized and the “wolf in sheep’s clothing” is, in fact, an enthusiastic and capable leader. For the life-long socialist, sour grapes are the order of the day.

  10. Jema 54 and biff jr – I don’t see how you can come to the conclusions you have about my environmental outlook (remarkably in line with the average poster on SDA), my view on each political party (they are all good and they are all bad, but some are worse than others on the things that matter and some fundamentals matter all the time and some peripherals matter at the time), the rhetoric of political parties (always seems to pale when put to the test of the fundamentals articulated by the “dead white guys”). I merely said that much of the change started before the election and it came from outside forces. I never attributed it to the provincial NGP. I was cautioning against all readers here becoming complacent and losing vigilence in the oversight of government just because that “nice young man from Swift Current” is in power now.
You are right, I was unclear in my post about the equalization promise. I view that as a provincial rights issue. Equalization is flawed, but let’s not let the fact that Saskatchewan is enjoying good times, will be a “have” province and can now contribute to the subsidy of “The Park” and the continued promotion of a unilingual Quebec, etc. prevent meaningful dialogue on reform. I viewed the fact that Saskatchewan was claiming money as a chance for reform by a government that seemed to think it was a good idea. Did I tell you what my view is on political parties and political rhetoric?
Jema 54, you do make an interesting point on the Yukon Territory. Stripping away the political rhetoric there is probably a grain of truth. I have seen that people in power certainly want to stay in power and do not want to change things that will tend to unseat them. The easiest way for them to do that is to set up or perpetuate a nanny state complete with medicare and childcare and gun laws, etc. And a good way to support it is to get outside support to preserving what you have – a park – what a great idea – so green – so culturally sensitive!
But all of this goes against basic human nature – which is to strive to advance and better oneself. If the government of Yukon is getting in the way of the bettering of the people of Yukon, it will fall. They all do.
I agree with your point about equalization money buying voter support and that is why I think it needs reform. Wall never said he was going to push for that so I don’t expect it from him. But large portions of the Saskatchewan population were very supportive and because the economy is good that is gone now. Just wait until they see that as a “have” province, we are contributing to the rest of Canada with little say in how that money is spent.
