To be fair, I’d be in a lot of pain too if I’d inadvertently separated from my unit and marched alone across Nazi-occupied Poland to single-handedly liberate Auschwitz ahead of the Red Army. Gawd, the blisters alone would have kept me in the attic for a year.
I think the Legions were the ultimate group therapy organizations after the wars. No professional counsellor could provide the same safe, understanding environment that the Legions did for the vets. Most of the vets grew through and out of that environment over the years; others unfortunately never did and ended up as burned out alcoholics. That’s a human tragedy, but hardly something to rub their noses in. And many men have indulged themselves in “the Demon Rum” and abused their spouses without ever being exposed to any of the horrors the vets faced.
