About a year ago or so, I was wandering through the Holocaust exhibit at the Imperial War Museum in London. They had a television with a looped presentation of Hitler making one of his speeches. Watching that old black and white footage in what I would describe as a detached environment (as opposed to being in the frenzied German crowd), one thing struck me as quite clear: he was nuts. He was clinically ga-ga all along. Audiences couldn’t see that I suppose because they were used to the theatrical exaggeration demanded of stage and screen in those days – and they wanted to believe him.
In the same exhibit, I had another interesting experience. There were some benches in front of another television. I sat down and there was footage of German soldiers bullying Orthodox (Hassidic) Jews in Poland. As I watched, a group of Hassidic Jewish men arrived and sat on the benches with me. I allowed my sight to move from the screen to the men; there was no difference between them and those Jews being taunted in the film. I wondered what they thought of it all. They just sat there impassively watching.
A pox on all demagogues, be they trumped-up Austrian corporals, mad mullahs or race-baiting preachers.
How come I wasn’t taught those techniques at my Toastmaster’s session? : (

Interesting isn’t it how COOL today is nerdy in 20 years. How demonic then becomes cartoonish now.
Some time back I saw (Kate link I believe) a quite revealing colour pic of Hitler with a couple of children. What was most striking was how small and weak he looked.
I’m also reminded that Nietzsche — the uber-man guy — had a nervous breakdown while watching a horse mistreated in the street.
