Kate, do you have any news items about non-left newspapers going under? I’m curious as to the extent of the slide in newspaper sales, if it hits both sides of the spectrum equally.

The National Post (aka Jerusalem Post canadian edition) is widely known in Canada as losing money (15 millions per years according to wikipedia).
Yet, it is kept alive artificially by the Asper family to promote its political agenda (mostly Israel).
But at 15 millions per year… they will eventually give up and I expect the NP to close down in the next 5 years. Coyne was smart to move to macleans.

Grok, its hard to find a non-left US newspaper. NY Post, maybe, is almost in the “center”. Kind of. On a good day.
The Star/Trib is so pink it practically glows in the dark. I used to live in Minnesota (gawd its boring!) and the only people in town who subscribed ( that we knew of anyway) were the fruity professors at the local university.

Aspers can support what they want with their own money. I do hate that CBCpravda is supported to the tune of a billion a year of taxpayers money and still cries poor.

AQS, you will admit that the NP has veered considerably Left after dear old Conrade Jailbird sold it to the Aspers. Andrew Coyne was the last hold-out from the flight of columnists that started with Christie Blatchford and Mark Steyn.
Coyne isn’t even particularly conservative for that matter, its just that he’s got a functional brain and isn’t a devoted pinko.

The entire left wing group of newspapers have been bankrupt for many years.

Circulation is declining for all of the top 25 papers by circulation in the U.S. Most of these newspapers are editorially liberal.
The WSJ (conservative) and USA Today (liberal) are doing better than most.

I am confident that the demise of this enterprise will have a significant beneficial effect on the environment. Included in the carbon footprint of this kind of business is the consumption of the biological carbon-sequestering agents otherwise known as trees. A double dip for the environment.
Let us also not forget that the unemployed will scale back their lifestyles, and thus individually reduce their carbon usage profiles as well (at least temporarily).
My question is, will the newly unemployed look for their next jobs online, or in the careers section of the classifieds of a “news”paper?

I look forward to the Toronto Red Star going down the same road as the Minneapolis paper. Now that will be a happy event.

For decades, most Media have Dumbed-Down news & information. Most of us knew it. But they were the only game in town.
But now, with the advent of the Internet and the millions of factual information sites out there, we all now realize just how bad a product most newspapers (and TV) are.
But, you say, there is lots of junk on the Internet ? Absolutely. But nothing beats side by side comparison — a click away !
With the likes of Reuters, AP, Thompson feeding virtually all media outlets the ‘line’, comparison was irrrelavant.
The ‘Power of the Pen’ has been replaced by the power of the ‘Keystroke’.
Speaking of dumb and considering that most media are organs of political parties;

Me, I love shadenfreude. The kicker is Vikes’ owner isn’t interested in the downtown property either so the assets aren’t what they thought they were.

At the farmers’ market in Mountain View yesterday, there was a booth for subscribing to newspapers. The San Jose Mercury (probably the best newspaper in California, not that the standards for that are very high) had an offer to subscribe for $59 per year. That included the Sunday edition.
I’d say that newspapers are in very big trouble in California.

Wooooo Hooooo! Another one down! Hopefully conservatives in the U.S. will start suing the paper for ANYTHING they can dream up just to harrass it into bankruptcy.

Could be wrong here, but I thought the saying is: “As dumb as a bag of hammer handles”
After all, with a bag of hammers, you can still earn a living. NO heads on the handles, well then you have our liberal party and LSM of Canada.
Witch would make more sense to me.
