While answering a question last night at the St. Lawrence debate, I mentioned that it’s important for us to realize that there are currently Canadian military officers serving in Iraq as part of the American command. Bob Rae interrupted me to object adamantly, almost angrily. “No there aren’t!”
Yes, I said, there are. “No there aren’t,” Mr. Rae said again. “They’re part of our military exchange program,” I explained. […] Strangely, Mr. Rae demanded I tell him where in Iraq our officers were stationed, as if my inability to do so would prove they weren’t there.
At that point, seeing no immediate resolution to our disagreement, I moved on with the rest of my answer. Today, however, having confirmed that I was correct, I’m quite taken aback that Mr. Rae could have been so misinformed about our military’s exchange program with the United States and our direct involvement in the war in Iraq. It’s made worse by the fact that Mr. Rae isn’t just any Liberal candidate: he’s the party’s foreign affairs critic.

The Dept. of -Defense- is there to -defend- Canada. Its purpose is to keep us safe, and that is why we pay for it. Its purpose is not to go and impose “peace” in the big wide world, that’s the exact thing Tindal is against the US doing. That’s why its called the DEFENSE Department.
Plus, what fantasy is it that renaming a department changes what it does? Should we give them pink uniforms with bunnies on them, so when they shoot some head chopper in Afghanistan it will be more “peaceful”? Maybe engrave “Have a great day!” on every bullet? I’m sure there’s some Green Party/NDP/Liberal buffoon who’d applaud for that too.

Strangely enough I remember an interview on the Fifth Estate with Ann Coulter. Reporter Bob Mckeown smugly informed Ann that no Canadians had ever served with the US military in Vietnam. Even though Ann said she had proof he still adamantly rebuked her claim. As a matter of fact, Canadian Forces personnel on exchange with both US and British forces have served in Iraq, and are serving as I write.
They were serving even as Prime Minister Chrétien was proudly declining to involve Canada in Iraq.
What I saw and heard were two individuals suffering from cerebral necrosis – one severely (you can decide which one) – and a cheering section, also suffering from this terrible malady.
