Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

China may prove to be a significant ally against todays greatest threat – the resurgent Islamofascist:
“China reveals Iran’s nuclear secrets to UN”
(telegraph.co.uk)
China has betrayed one its closest allies by providing the United Nations with intelligence on Iran’s efforts to acquire nuclear technology, diplomats have revealed.
Concern over Tehran’s secretive research programme has increased in recent weeks after officials at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the UN’s nuclear watchdog, discovered that Iran had obtained information on how to manufacture nuclear-armed weapons.
Beijing is believed to have decided to assist the inspectors after documents seized from Iranian officials included blueprints for “shaping” uranium metal into warheads, the testing of high explosives used to detonate radioactive material and the procurement of dual-use technology.
Much of the new material was presented to the governors of the Vienna-based IAEA in February. That meeting is said to have triggered China’s change of heart.
Diplomats described Beijing’s decision to provide material related to Iran to the IAEA as a potentially significant breakthrough.
Now these same groups want Canada to ‘boycott the Olympics’.
If he indicated he was going to boycott, they would be up in arms screeching that he was harming relations.
Whatever Harper does, the opposition will complain and champion the opposite.

“Corruption, intimidation, robbery, violent assault, forgery, large-scale fraud. No, not the subject of the latest John Grisham novel, but sensational allegations, made public Apr. 4 by Hermitage Capital Management.until recently the largest foreign portfolio investor in Russia.
In a detailed and damning report, titled Criminal Justice.Russian-Style, Hermitage alleges the fund’s Russian subsidiaries have fallen victim to an elaborate con designed to defraud the fund of hundreds of millions of dollars.
The most sensational part of Hermitage’s allegations is that the attempted larceny was carried out with the direct connivance of officials in the Russian police. Hermitage alleges the police seized documents and equipment that were instrumental to the attempted fraud, which involved bogus court cases based on forged documents, the aim of which was to sue Hermitage subsidiaries for hundreds of millions of dollars.
*The most shocking thing is not that there are corporate raiders in Russia who attempt to steal your shares,* says Jamison Firestone, managing partner of Firestone Duncan, Hermitage’s law firm.
*The shocking thing is that the police worked hand-in-hand with them, and actually performed the theft of the documents so that the corporate raiders could then do their work.* **

irwin daisy – exactly. I’m very suspicious of the Dalai Lama’s ‘John Lennon/Yoko Ono’ image of saintliness.
Tibet and China have been embroiled in identity politics since the 7th century. That’s a very, very long debate. It’s not new, it’s not black and white. Frankly, I suspect that the Dalai Lama set up this whole situation (as China is alleging) to obtain world sympathy for Tibet, at a time when China is trying to move itself and its image, into the modern world.
China is changing. Moving from a peasant, and I mean a non-industrial peasant, agricultural system to an industrial economy in one generation is a monumental task.
Educating that population as a common nation is another monumental task. After all, China is an enormous geographic area, with a great variety of terrain and has always been a loose conglomeration of multiple peoples, with different dialects. Moving them to literacy is enormous in itself – Chinese is not phonetic; there’s no alphabet.
So, we have to help China come out of its former isolation and ‘enter the global world’ and interact positively with the rest of the world. That will help it change. But if we get all hoity-toity in our superiority, reject it, punish it for ‘being bad’ – the Chinese will retreat in anger and humiliation.
‘Face’ is very important in all Asian cultures; not just Chinese. In Asian cultures you don’t insult someone, humiliate them – and expect them to, as we might, ‘brush it off’. They wouldn’t show it, but their anger and humiliation would throw them back into further aloofness and isolation. [Unlike Middle East cultures, where the humiliation would be reacted to with violent reprisals].
So, with China, my suggestion is that you don’t boycott, and you do acknowledge their hard work at building a proper Olympic setting. At trying to clean up pollution – so the athletes can breathe in Beijing! At trying to clean up so many other things..from smoking, spitting (very common and Chinese are being told that ‘it’s not acceptable any more)…on and on and on.
And you keep commenting on such things as human rights – as you praise them for their attempts to be part of the modern world.

“At 2:18 into the video embedded into the article, something very curious is presented. It is a map showing carbon levels at 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM. What makes this curious to me, is that carbon levels are markedly lower later in the day. I find it very curious that human activities can be blamed for increased carbon levels when the maps presented show a decrease in carbon levels AFTER a full day of human of activities. If carbon levels are highest following a period of reduced human activity (night), such as the maps present, the increased carbon levels cannot be due to increased human activity, but most likely due another cause … like plants unable to convert carbon dioxide to oxygen through photosynthesis without sunlight.

Children Told they are Dogs during Mosque Visit
THE HAGUE, 09/04/08 – A primary school in Amsterdam wished to provide its pupils with an understanding for other cultures. But during a visit to a mosque, the children were told they were dogs.
With a view to developing understanding and respect for other cultures among children, primary school De Horizon regularly organises outings to various religious organisations. The chairman of the El Mouchidine mosque told the children from group 7 (aged 10) and their chaperones however that non-Muslims are dogs.
In a letter to the children’s parents, the school expresses its regret at the incident: “We are shocked that during the guided tour, the mosque’s chairman told the children and chaperoning parents that non believers were dogs. We consider this statement as unacceptable since we allow our children to partake in this project to develop respect for freedom of religious choice”.
In the meantime, the school’s management has addressed the mosque on the undesirable behaviour of the chairman. Both parties will say nothing further on the matter. “We will resolve the matter amongst ourselves and I have no inclination whatsoever to discuss the matter with the media”, as newspaper De Telegraaf quoted the school’s spokesperson Mariet ten Berge. “We have been to the mosque before and it always went well”.
Angry parents had sent the letter on to De Telegraaf but were reportedly rapped on the knuckles by the school’s management. “The school wishes to play this down. That is precisely the problem”, as one mother commented.”
