Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

"The New York Times link to me yesterday [...] generated one-fifth of the traffic I normally get from a link from Small Dead Animals." - Kathy Shaidle
"You may be a nasty right winger, but you're not nasty all the time!" - Warren Kinsella

That is awesome! I love all the other pictures as well.
The statue was made by the french during La Belle Epoque.
Awesome? Nay kind Sir. That is more than awesome. That is something the Yanks,You-alls, BushMcChimpyHitlerites have…National Pride and Patriotism. Something sorely missing in this country. Could somebody please give me one thing that defines a Canadian, besides anti-American and the best soldiers in the world? Please!
But …. but …. but, we’ve got free health care. Haven’t you heard?
I love the planning and expertise, and how they doubled the number of men in the flame to create density and perspective for the whole shoot. Beyond the math of creating the shot, can you just imagine 105F degrees outside in the blazing sun in a wool uniform waiting for the photographer to snap the picture? Amazing what they were willing to do.
Well, Bobbi, in July of 1918, you did whatever the Officer Commanding told you to do. Whether it was standing out in 100* plus temps in a wool suit, or quacking like a duck, you did it.
That fact notwithstanding, they are all impressive images.
That would be sir-ette justthinkin, but we have the vanishing polar bears, and, and… the loonie, now the loonie is very Canadian!
Opppsss…sorry Hunter. Guess I should have checked your blog first. My bad. And the Toonie! Why in a couple of years we will all have the only known remaining representation of a polar bear! Except for my rug. hehehe
Bobbi & Sober, I don’t think “willing” would come into the equation, whether it was 1918 or 90 years later. Soldiers do what they are told. I’ve seen my share of parade squares littered with fainted bodies.
Mind you, even now you can get masses of people to do things if they think they are part of something special. The willing subjects of Spencer Tunick’s works are a prime example. I’ve often wondered how many naked people you could put in a Saskatchewan wheat field? Without a guvment grant of course 😉
justthinkin. french?
Indeed. What would we Canadians depict were we to even consider such a feat? A Health Card? A peace sign??
Sad.
Phenomenal; and second Bobbi’s comments wrt the planning, perspective etc. Kathy, we could depict the Vimy war memorial. Anyone who’s seen that cannot fail to be impressed. And that’s one count on which I’ll give unfailing kudos to the French; they meticulously preserve and respect those war graves.
anti-Christian frog…..she’s holding a Bible in her hand!
Just thought I’d play with your puny provincial mind a little.
There are so many things that make me proud of my country and proud of my people that I don’t know where to begin: I’m proud of the Greatest Generation” for not going over to the Bolsheviks during the Great Depression – people starved to death and froze to death yet they never resorted to the vandalism and thuggery, murder and destruction that reduced the people of Russia to a bloody mass of frightened mice ruled by a few filthy rats, I am proud to be a descendant of the men and women who volunteered to fight the Nazis and the Japanese in WWII thus saving the planet from universal slavery, I am proud to be a descendant of Highland Scots who crossed the ocean with children and no money – my people worked and bought land so they would be free of the cursed landlord and would never be thrown off their own property again – no gument help for my people!, I an proud of my ancestors who packed up their families in E. Canada and settled the west, building the infra structure from a scratch with their guns, dogs, horses and highland cattle (later Herefords when the fences were built), I’m proud of Calgary, I’m proud of our mighty mountains and our fabulous skiers, I’m proud of our Hockey players, I’m proud of our WWI soldiers who were braver than any others because they were not ‘going over the top’ for wealth for ‘King and Country’; they were fighting for the soldiers beside them, the folks back home and the soldiers who had already died. I am a very proud Western Canadian – but I’m proud of things in the East too; I’m proud of the wild independant seafarers from NFLD and the Mari times, I’m proud of Quebec City and the St. Lawrence Seaway. I have not spent much time east of the Sask western border where I was born (in the beautiful Cypress Hills). I am proud of the fabulous Gold Rush in the Yukon Territory (home now) and the White Pass Railroad.
I can honestly say that our politicians up until the last two years have been a source of shame for stalwart, honest, decent, brave, ‘can do’ Canadians – with the notable exception of some Provincial Premiers (Earnest Manning, Ralph Kline, Mr. Vanderzalm, Mr. Harris, Mr. Williams) and the Reform/Alliance/Conservative M.Ps of the last 20 years.
There is much, much more to be proud of in our country – we could write books and books and books – we have been brainwashed by lefto writers and agenda driven people into believing that we are a ‘surrender nation’ without outstanding people. We are not and we, the people, are finally stepping in front of the morally depressing politicians/msm of the left to have our say – thanks to blogs like SDA. Thank-you Kate!
