    Here we go again.
    I just wish once one of these ‘strong willed’ women of the ‘head scarf/covered face defenders brigade’ were as militant about saving their sisters suffering back in their countries of origin.
    Like the woman recently given 200 lashes for being gang raped by seven men in authority in the magical kingdom of land of sand, oil, money, corruption and spilled blood.
    Or child brides, public executions, lack of human rights, slavery, a punitive kingdom sanctioned murder/revenge (harsher for infidels and women) blood money, terrorism, banned freedom of religion, thought and expression and etc.
    Guess it more important to shove ‘their’ beliefs down our throats instead of understanding a rational point of view.
    It’s simply safety first in this case. Same as the last case. I suspect malingering here, but I’m also becoming more jaded about these demands for religious restrictions and incursions into our open society.

    A security guard at Toronto’s Pearson Airport was ordered off the job for wearing a skirt that’s too long.
    Halima Muse, a practicing Muslim, was laid off without pay by the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority until she agrees to wear a standard uniform that includes either slacks or a skirt that falls at the knee.
    Not willing to oblige by the rules, she took matters into her own hands and filed a complaint to the Canadian Human Rights Commission saying she was the target of religious discrimination, since Islam instructs that she dress modestly.
    Muse, 33, claims that she’s never had any problems with her employer in the five years that she’s worked there, until now. She told media that her decision to sport the longer skirt was not a matter of personal style, it was about dignity.
    In a statement she made to the Commission, Muse said she never liked the uniform pants that she used to wear because they showed the shape of her body. So she asked the person in charge of work attire for a skirt that’s longer than the standard one, but was told it didn’t exist. So she went out and bought material matching in colour and made her own skirt that reached her ankle.

    LONDON–The Canadian owner of an “urban, funky, punky” hair salon is being sued for religious discrimination for refusing to hire a Muslim woman in a headscarf as a stylist.
    Sarah Desrosiers, 32, originally from Windsor, Ont., says she turned down applicant Bushra Noah as a junior stylist to maintain the image of her salon.
    She told Noah, 19, that she needed staff to display their hairstyles to the public, but the devout Muslim insisted that wearing her headscarf was essential to her beliefs.
    Noah, who has been rejected for 25 different hairdressing jobs after interviews, is suing Desrosiers for the equivalent of $30,000 for injury to her feelings plus an unspecified sum for lost earnings.
    Desrosiers, who set up her Wedge salon in King’s Cross, north London, 18 months ago, says she faces financial ruin if she loses the case and would be forced to close.
    She denies any discrimination and insists it is an “absolutely basic” job requirement that people should be able to see a stylist’s hair.
    “When a potential client walks past on the street, they mostly look into a salon at the stylists to get an impression of what haircut they are going to get there,” said Desrosiers. “The image I have built my salon on is very urban, funky, punky. That is the look I am going for.
    “If an employee were wearing a baseball cap or cowboy hat I would ask them to remove it at work.
    “The essence of my line of work is the display of hair. To me, it’s absolutely basic that people should be able to see the stylist’s hair. It has nothing to do with religion. It is just unfortunate that for her covering her hair symbolizes her religion.
    “I now feel like I have been branded a racist. My accountant is Muslim. I have never discriminated against Muslims. My name is being dragged through the mud and I feel victimized.

  10. The Stephen Harper the Media Refuses to Talk About
    I got some inside information on the PM’s recent visit to the Thunder Bay Superior North riding a couple of weeks ago. For those of you unaware (which is likely most of you since the national press stayed in Ottawa), he came to the town of Nipigon, to announce the creation of a marine protection area for the north shore of Lake Superior, an important environmental announcement. However, more important is a couple of facts:
    1) He was the first sitting Prime Minister ever to visit Nipigon. Nipigon is a small town, its economically depressed right now. Their major employer had a major fire last year which essentially closed the facility (local grocery stores here in Thunder Bay took up donations of food to send to the people of Nipigon at the time), and its been a tough road for them. They could have announced it in Thunder Bay, the major center of the region, or in any of the other small towns, but Nipigon was selected precisely because it was neglected by previous federal governments, and had been going through hard times and could use the pick-me-up. It is also worth noting that the Nipigon area is a lot of union folk, and tends to drift towards the NDP, not Conservative.
    2) To get to Nipigon he had to travel by motorcade down one of Canada’s worst highways about 100km, this was done over the objections of his security detail, and his planning people who felt it was a waste of his time.
    3) When Harper arrived, the kids from a Nipigon school had come out to welcome him with signs, and he directed his motorcade to stop (over the objections of his security detail again), and he spend at least 10 minutes meeting the school kids and talking to them and their teachers.

The real Stephen Harper is one who is warm and caring, and who goes out of his way to brighten the days of others, and who is really concerned with getting things done for people, and especially people in Northern Ontario. …+

    The stupidity of people doing the hiring/interview never ceases to amaze me and I tend not to have any sympathy for them.
    Instead of saying, “sorry, but we have hired someone else” they insist on giving reasons that can be construed as being discrimanatory.
    You don’t have to give a reason for hiring who you do(at least not yet) so why would anyone with any sense at all say things like, “sorry, your to old” or “I don’t hire muslims” or “I don’t like Chinese” etc.

    Yes, maz2, the Lib-friendly MSM continue to paint this fantasy of Harper as an aloof (and now corrupt) bully. Too bad those inconvenient elections come along where Canadians actually start to pay attention to politics, and now we don’t have to rely on Giggles and Puffy et al to tell us what we should think.
    If only they could get rid of elections. BTW, any bets on this:
    Dion either won’t be around as Grit leader for next election, or will at least have a stunt double, like Ignatieff stand in for the english language debates. I know, that is not fair.

    He’s now telling us more than he thinks when he stated on QP the Inquiry shouldn’t smear everybody.
    Well, Hello! How does he know there are others to “smear”? Is he worried about his previous bosses?
    Mulroney is going to give it to them this time, no more accusations from the Libranos and a man who is in jail awaiting deportation.
    The Media hacks are not too comfy either. They’ll be busy checking up on what they said and wrote for the past few weeks/months/years.

  17. Curious. Last week the G&M ran an article about the man who was tasered in the Vancouver airport. It was a somewhat gushy piece, quoting relatives describing the man as a “gentle giant”, a loving family member, interested in star-gazing and geography, lived alone and was not involved with any women.
    Yesterday, a number of media sources including the Nat. Post and Vcr Sun ran a piece about him. It was quite different. The article mentioned that he has served a five-year prison sentence for armed robbery and had lived for the past 15 years with his alcoholic girlfriend. Friends and family quoted in the piece said that he had made a number of wrong decisions in his life.
    Doesn’t sound like the same person, does it?
    Curious.

    Quickly, the idea is you allow the suspended powder to build up a ring-sealing varnish or coating that gives you more compression, saves gas and cuts your escaping oil way down. [ Cut 1 oil per 2 fill-ups to 1 in 15 on my Jeep]

    What an idiot. By all means let’s do that. Then we can check into why Dion’s office did nothing when this PM-in-waiting received the same correspondence; why Robert Thibault visited KHS in his jail cell, then libelled PMBM; then let’s investigate the settlement Grit govt made with Mulroney; then Stevie Cameron’s actions as paid informant, working with Liberals; and on and on.
    Then we can investigate the politicization of civil service and overt, and incredibly expensive, corruption of Liberal govt, which Dion part of.

    Former prime minister Jean Chretien suggested to reporters that a public inquiry may not be the best way to get to the bottom of the Mulroney-Schreiber affair.
    “It’s not the best way to solve problems,” Chretien told reporters, in his first media appearance since undergoing heart bypass surgery last month. “We have police for these things. But there will be an inquiry, so we will live with an inquiry.”

  27. Thank you Maz2 for the info re Harper’s visit to Nipigon. The Canadian Press reporting in this instance is blatantly biased. It’s what we have come to expect, but the unfairness is still hard to take. I decided long ago that the image of “cold” Stephen Harper was a media construct. It is repeated again and again with no real evidence to back it up. The other night on Paikin I was appalled to hear Lawrence Martin bringing this up yet again — Martin is particularly relentless in this view to the point where the observation is now seriously hackneyed. I can think of many things to suggest that Harper is a genuinely warm and caring person on a personal level (a great background article about his wife with insites into Harper in McCleans a few months ago) — but the media do not care to take notice.

  28. I think that the NDP is missing a significant opportunity to distinguish themselves from the Liberals by backing off of the enquiry. The Liberals have a vendetta on this, but the viscious politicing is quite transparant. (I thought even Martha Hall Findlay seemed uncomfortable with their position the other day.) Conservatives are caught, I think. NDP has an opportunity to come down on the side of common sense and I think that many people would respect them for it. My sense is that there are quite a few indications that the upcoming inquiry into “mulroneygate” is a waste of taxpayer’s money — it is also a serious distraction from other more important business. I think it is really hard to see where the Canadian public has anything to gain. There are, of course, other routes to getting Mulroney if there is anything to be got (back GST taxes or whatever) In any event all can be investigated and dealt with without an enquiry. I really don’t think that most taxpayers care that much about Mulroney’s alleged transgressions at this point.
