  1. If Mulroney broke the law nail him. If Cretien and Martin did the same lets nail them too.
Wow , left and right for dummies …. well put Joe .

  2. $300,000 is pocket change compared to the tens of millions that the Liberal Party stole from taxpayers.

  3. Ted, there were police investigations leading up to Gomery inquiry. If present investigation goes that way, then special prosecutor and even judicial inquiry might be appropriate for what Norman Spector somehow believes is the worst scandal in Canadian history. But, what should be investigated – the facts of the matter, not some alleged “coverup” as Dion purports. Yes, let’s investigate why government and RCMP botched this thing from day one. Let’s investigate why Stevie Cameron got away with writing a book based on evidence she had not proof of, which became basis for Fifth Estate program that cost taxpayers over $2 million in libel settlement. Yes, by all means, let’s have an investigation – into this matter and Shawinigate, and yes, let’s find out what the political operatives (Chretien, Gagliano et al) knew about this criminal enterprise.
If Mulroney is found to be dirty, let him swing. Heck if you can even prove Harper is covering up, then have at him too. Good luck with both of them. Let’s get to the bottom of government corruption once and for all. I’m all for that.
Personally, I think Grits are flogging a dead horse here. If Mulroney has done anything illegal, he has covered his tracks by now. Likely the same for Chretien if he is criminally culpable in Adscam.
Maybe Grits will present real-life policies, instead of guidelines, and get themselves a proper leader, with real policies, rather than hoping for some kind of scandal here. Then, again, maybe not.

  4. maz2
“””So, if Mr. Chretien or his successor have any problem with that, maybe they should start by explaining why at that time they paid Mr. Mulroney a compensation for being unjustly accused.”””
that may be why Harper is calling an inquiry, may there is more to it than meets the eye, the lieberals may yet wish they had taken a PASS on this one
    TED the troll
whom is defending moosejaw (mulruinedy) in here????????

  5. “Because Mulroney lied about his relationship with Karlheinz Schreiber”
In other words,Mulroney simply denies the allegation, and the liberals fold the investigation and hand him money. And now they’re trying to tar PM Harper with this?

  6. Mulroney is now reported to be calling for a full judicial inquiry!! The future should be very interesting for the Liberal Party.

  7. I think Harper’s comment on this subject from last week says it soooo well. Paraphrasing, “Are you guys SURE you want me to start digging in to the misdeeds of past prime ministers?”
There’s got to be closets full of Liberal skeletons just creaking at the hinges. One little rattle at the doorknob, there’s going to be bones all over the place. Some of those bones are PC, awesome.
I’ll drop not a single tear for the late, unlamented Progressive Conservative Party. Slayers of the Arrow to start with, then we have them to thank for the present obscene state of the gun laws in this country. Brian Mulroney and Kim Campbell can K my A! In Technicolor.

  8. Mulroney is now reported to be calling for a full judicial inquiry!!
Yes he is. But what sort of game is he playing?
Or, is he a man who genuinely believes he is being smeared by the Liberals and a slimey arms dealer and simply wants to clear his name?
    Takers?

  9. Mulroney is cornered. What else can he do but call for a public inquiry. If Harper controls the investigation, then Harper’s appointee could easily issue a report just cuts Mulroney up and Mulroney doesn’t get his big public defence. The chill is already setting in and Mulroney must know that all of those bedwetters that he has been mentoring over the last 3-4 years, including PMSH, are cutting him loose. Better for Mulroney (and standard fare Mulroney, just as it was standard far Chretien) to go on the offence. In a full public inquiry, Harper doesn’t control, the Liberals don’t control, Mulroney gets to say his bloated piece and Mulroney’s lawyers get to go to work on any and every witness who takes the stand.
More importantly, Mulroney probably knows that Harper is not going to do it. So he gets to claim injustice and lack of due process, and the truth never got out, etc.
For the record, I think Harper is only guilty of not wanting this to distract his government from its priorities. (That being crushing the Liberals, of course.) That being said, Toews shouldn’t have started an investigation into Mulroney and then quietly stopped it. That is one of those things that makes the public (and opposition parties without much on the go) go hmmmmm when the former PM, and his people, are such close advisors.

  10. Start with mulroney, then on to cretian and martin. sounds great. announce all three at one time and see how fast Borat Dion screams “dat is not fair, you ‘ave priorities”
three quebecers behind bars is just a start.

  11. Frankly, I’m getting sick and tired of hearing about this. Mulroney wants a full public inquiry to end this charade once and for all. This is like the 1993 election campaign that never ended. Let’s MOVE on already…and once this is done, I hope the Liberal party gets sued for everything that they’re worth…

  12. I am not up to speed on this ruse by the Libs to try to paint Harper guilty of something that happened twenty five years ago when he was still in college.
Isn’t that Karl Shrieber dude doing time?
Didn’t Mulrony retire as the most hated PM in history? And isn’t his son the TV idiot a total embarrassment to him too?
Enough already this is bullshit. Let us move on.
The Libranos were far worse and little has happened to that gang of criminals.
Again … Enough already, let’s move on.

  13. For the Liberals, the calls for a public inquiry are not about Mulroney. For the Liberals it is about creating a large, ongoing, three ring circus through which they (along with their media cheerleaders) could create a link between “crooked” and “conservative” in voters minds. Just check Warren Kinsella’s archives regarding his thoughts on the wisdom of launching Gomery. Notwithstanding Gomery was based on an auditor general’s report and not allegations by a sundry slimeball like Schreiber.
To institute a full blown inquiry would help the Liberals, help Mulroney (as per Ted’s comments) and hurt PMSH. Alternatively, to refuse to do anything would make PMSH look bad.
PMSH is doing exactly the right thing. Have an independent person above reproach dig into it and submit findings and a recommendation on whether or not to bring in the RCMP.

  14. Just for the record…
This is one Ontario native that voted Reform…
    way before the PCs folded
I didn’t like Mr. Mulroney’s constant patting of himself on the back…however
I did like the GST and Free Trade…
I have never had a problem with lowering or eliminating any tax…GST included
Despite what Leftie whiners would like to think Mr. Mulroney retired…he left on his own terms…the same as Mike Harris did
Revisionist wishing does not change the facts…people supported both of them to the point of 2 huge majorities
If Mr. Mulroney had shady dealings…which I highly doubt…they have absolutely nothing to do with one of the architects of the party the was formed to replace the party he led…
No matter how the frigging media will try to play it!!!

  15. This whole Mulroney Affair looks completely staged with every actor playing his role on cue. One has to wonder what is Harper up to??
With Brian Mulroney calling for public inquiry one can be assured that revelations will become very embarrassing for the Liberals.

  16. “Mulroney said he wants a public inquiry to cover the period from his time in office in 1988 to the present day.”
Wouldn’t that be a tasty morsel.

  17. Mulroney speaks (sort of): http://www.cbc.ca/canada/story/2007/11/12/mulroney-inquiry.html
Throws in warning/threat to all police, public servants and elected reps from 1988 to the present day.
    —————–
“I have come to the conclusion that in order to finally put this matter to rest and expose all the facts and the role played by all the people involved, from public servants to elected officials, from lobbyists to police authorities, as well as journalists, the only solution is for the government to launch a full-fledged public commission of inquiry,” he said in a statement.
The statement was read to the Canadian Press by longtime spokesman Luc Lavoie.
Mulroney has denied all accusations of impropriety and received a $2.1-million settlement after his name was publicly mentioned in connection with an investigation into the sale of Airbus jets to Air Canada.
Media observers told CBC’s The National that they believe Mulroney was doing the right thing, but that it’s somewhat late.
He could have cleared all this up years ago simply by explaining himself — explaining what he was doing, taking cash in envelopes from Karlheinz Schreiber,” said Andrew Coyne of Maclean’s magazine. “That being said, he’s doing the right thing.”
“If I were in Mulroney’s shoes, I’d do exactly what he’s done tonight, which is kind of regain the initiative and go back to what he used to say some years back when he did want a public inquiry,” said Chantal Hébert of the Toronto Star.
The former prime minister has been silent for several days, but his call for a muscular investigation into his affairs suggests his silence may be coming to an end and he may attempt to regain the initiative after watching Schreiber win daily headlines with a series of public statements.
A full-fledged public inquiry would have the power to compel witnesses to testify under oath. It was just such an inquiry under Justice John Gomery that unearthed details of the sponsorship scandal that torpedoed the former Liberal government.
Mulroney said he wants a public inquiry to cover the period from his time in office in 1988 to the present day.
“Only then will the whole truth be finally exposed and tarnished reputations restored,” he said.

  18. Question period should be a blast tomorrow.
From 1988-present. Wont that include chretain and martin years.

  19. What the hell.Let’s take a page from the Pakistan playbook, declare martial law and then send the cops out to club lawyers for a day or two. We will all feel much better come the weekend.

  20. It’s unfortunate that liberals can rely on the amnesia of too many voters so Dion, who was a Quebec cabinet minister during the Adscam scandal and claimed to know absolutely nothing about the truckloads of tax money showered in Quebec with kickbacks to his party now has the nerve to question Harper’s unfamiliarity with a single letter sent months ago by a convicted felon.
This is the Liberal way, coached by Kinsella. Be a shameless hypocrite. Throw enough mud and some will stick. Just once, it would be nice to see the Liberal strategy bite them in the behind because of an informed electorate with elephantine memory.

  21. Did the Citoyen Dion-Liberals hide/sit on the excrement they received from the jailbird? Did the Liberals receive the excrement in brown envelopes? Is Citoyen Dion covering up the excrement?
Did Citoyen Dion-Liberals keep or did they “THEY THREW IT AWAY”, the excrement package they received from the jailbird seven months ago?
    …-
Brian Mulroney calls Stephane Dion’s bluff

Here’s a new twist on the so called “letter” that Shreiber sent to the PM’s office seven months ago and that Harper is accused of “covering up”.
Shreiber has been a busy guy copying LOTS of people in on these “letters”…Pat Martin of the NDP said today that the NDP received the same package as the PM seven months ago and THEY THREW IT AWAY!!!!
If the NDP received the same package it is no stretch to assume that Stephane Dion as Liberal leader would have ALSO received the same package. Question: WHEN did Dion’s Liberals get their package, what did they do with it and WHY have THEY sat on it for seven months if it was SOOOOO important.? Hmmmm????
    Paul said:
C’mon now, Marie. You’ve seen the Liberals lately. They’re very good at sitting on things. Especially when it’s time to vote against something they hate. …-

  22. Looking forward to this inquiry into Mulroney’s supposed $300.000 deal with his thorn Schreiber.
There’s no way Harper could be implicated and if he says he had no knowledge of any letter, that means exactly that. He has far too much at stake to lie like a Liberal. The Liberals are so hungry for power they’re prepared to believe the jailed and about to be deported Shreiber over an honest person. Not surprising, Karlheinz Shreiber is the Liberal’s next great hope for power, they’ll be fighting to keep him here.
It’s the Liberals who should be concerned, they’re the ones who forked over a couple of million of our money to Mulroney as a “settlement” without thorough investigation, WHY?

  23. Self-professed “non-partisan” Ted, who NEVER has anything positive to say about conservatives (which makes you go…hmmmm…Ted MUST be partisan and MUST therefore be a liar), is now flailing about regarding Mulroney and how bad this makes the Conservatives look. Big surprise!
But as he finds out, conservatives are all about law and order…if Mulroney is guilty, then fry him!
If Harper is as wise as I think he is, he may do the following: call a judicial inquiry into Government of Canada actions FROM 1988 TO THE PRESENT and not just single out Mulroney. He could say that it is time to re-establish the trust of Canadians with their government and clean out the closets of all skeletons. If he’s worried about the Conservatives being tarred with anything, then style it as a “Truth and Reconcilliation Inquiry”. Yeehaw!
And, as for Mulroney…isn’t he a Power Corp boy? Won’t he be willing to “take one for the team” and return the Liberals to power?

  24. On CBC’s specially-convened “At Issue” panel last night, Chantal Hebert, the only panelist who ever evinces being mildly non-plussed at the nature of CBC’s spin, pointed out that “…this did not take place on Stephen Harper’s watch; he was not sitting around the cabinet table; he wasn’t even in the same party as Brian Mulroney…”
Irrelevant, apparently; Mansbridge replied, “I, I get that, but you know what the opposition is going to be focusing on starting tomorrow…”
Yeah, they’ll be focusing on the same thing CBC is: trying to tar Stephen Harper with the contents of their own filthy bucket and trying to not appear as ridiculously partisan and hypocritical as they are.
Imagine that when Jean Chretien was prime minister some revelation emerged about a former prime minister from another party, and that the incident, involving private money, had occurred after that former prime minister had left office. Would CBC or anyone else be trying to attach it to Mr. Chretien? It would be ludicrous.
Did CBC ever ask “What did Mr. Chretien know about his Public Works minister’s connections, and when did he know it?” or “What did Mr. Chretien know about his own phone calls to the head of the BDC, and when did he know it?” Or “When did Mr. Chretien become aware of the ongoing gooning of Francois Beaudoin?” Or “When did Mr. Chretien became aware of Louise Beaudoin’s curious behaviour regarding the Oil-For-Food scandal?” Or…
Never. The Liberals’ full knowledge of the illegal procedures, involving taxpayer’s money, that they they had set up while they were in government wasn’t really, uhh, pointed out by CBC, or investigated by the “Fifth Estate”. Yet now the alleged malfeasance of a former prime minister from a different party than Harper, and which involved a sum of money about 1/60th of that in Adscam, and which was not taxpayer money, is being attached to Mr. Harper.
So fair, so balanced, so non-partisan.
Last week the CBC did a story on the issue of Senate reform. Mansbridge began with sarcasm: “A national vote on the future of the Senate — sound exciting?
He handed off to Susan Bonner “for a bit of context on the Senate issue…”
She began: “You could be forgiven for wishing that some debates would just remain shut away…”
Back in studio, Coyne made a reasonable point about the non-democratic nature of the Senate, etc.; Mansbridge said, in a tired tone, like he’d heard just about enough of that sort of talk already,
“I don’t know, it just seems to me that eyes are starting to glaze over on this issue nationally — Alan, does it, I, I, I, I understand and appreciate that there’s a certain kick for this in the, especially in certain parts of the west, where they’re big on it — and David will talk about it in a minute — but generally, as a national issue, is there any play in Senate reform?

  25. BillD Cat : “Who should be Liberal leader ?
    J.Trudeau 40% Iggy 25% Rae 23% Kennedy 11%”
This is probably one of the most damning condemnations of the mental health of Canadians I have ever seen.
Aside from the fact these polls are concocted ways of lying with figures, the fact that Canadians could be open to such a dynastic partisan paradigm makes me stand in awe at the political naiveté which the MSM has cultured in the voter.

  26. The sooner they abolish not only the Senate, but even more fervently see to abolishing the CBC, the better.
Take heart everyone, Saskatchewan has gone Conservative provincially, and as I see it, this is one small change in what is going to be a large change nationally. The Liberals and the Left generally, are frightened.
There is something we can learn from our neighborhood Leftists. We have to be much more adamant in dealing with the media, in our language and demanding that our voice be heard. For instance, I’ve adopted the moniker of “radical fundamentalist Leftists” or “radical anarchistic Leftists” when referring to those with even a hint of Left ideology. Besides enraging them (which is lots of fun) it also alienates them by pinning a perception to their beliefs. The Left has been using this strategy for years, it’s time we had some fun with it. One might say, what is good for the goose is good for the gander.

  27. Wording the founding of a public inquiry: Whereas reputationthe office of the PM of Canada has been inpinged with allegations of wrongdoing by people in the office of the Prime Minister including Prime Ministers past we will convene a public inquirey to clear the reputation and prosecute any wrong doing by pevious holders of this office and people attached to this office beginning with the time of Joe Clark to present.

  28. Eeyore mentions Power Corps, now we all know the connections there cross political lines, could be very interesting.
Bring on the probe or Inquiry on this whole affair, Mulroney is anxious to clear his name and says he will co-operate fully to do so.
Let’s enjoy the ride and relish the spectacle of Bullcrap splattering back in Librano faces.
They can be prepared as a Party to pay the piper this time, not the Canadian taxpayers. That’s the reward they deserve for stooping to the lowest form of politics to get and retain power.

  29. Jeez, the guy should demand an apology for being identified as Dion. Now he has some similarity to Steffi but he looks more intelligent, less like Howdy Doody.

  30. Did anyone else notice that the usually viciously anti-Harper ,Richard Brennan PPG head, was noticeably disconcerted by Harpers reaction?

  31. Let’s see. The Fiberals (through the Canadian taxpayers) had to pay out about $2 million damages to Mulroney some years ago over this very same mess. One would think that that should/would be the end of it.
    But noooo.
I wonder what it will cost the taxpayers on this go around?

  32. 300K palm greasing from eager German manufacturing is standard and only *naughty*, not criminal…[ If it is true at all.] B.C. just took delivery of an ocean ferry made in Germany.
That Schreiber should be able to spend $100 million$ of our money with Dion*s cheerleading, just so he can avoid German court,.. now that is criminal.
We can listen to Schreiber AFTER he clears German justice. = TG

  33. Crucify Mulrooney if he took liberty with his elite position of trust, and jail him if he broke the law in any way.
    Party affiliation is no bother.
    Crime is crime.
Dirty politicians are just that, dirty politicians .
The politicos punishment should be harsher than the sentence given the citizens commiting like offences, since our political masters have promised to uphold their office and sworn an extra oath to do their utmost.
Bury this corrupt bunch of Power/Desmaris thugs that have damaged our country to perhaps beyond repair status.
Progressive conservatives, liberals and dippers a crook is a crook.
    Heads on Pikes!

  34. This inquiry will go on and on and will cost tens of millions of dollars. Lawyers will get rich and very little will come of it. Many skeletons will be dug up including those in Liberal closets.
Who will pay for it? Taxpayers of course.

  35. There is affable, congenial, Lloyd Robertson on CTV talking about the Schreiber affair. “To hold an independent review etc”. Next, the RCMP have been brought in. That got a lift in Lloyds voice .

We all know about inquiries. Bob Rae and his Air India inquiry. What for? Two men still free and will remain. Even if proven, just what did Mulroney do as a private citizen?

Talking of gangsters (joke). It was Jake (The Barber) Factor
back in the 1930’s or so. Factor was to be extradited to England for insurance fraud. He claimed a crime by Roger Touhy of kidnapping. The Americans held him as material witness. He died in opulent luxury in America at a ripe old age.

Scheiber must have read that account.
