Among The Many Things I Enjoy About Travelling In The US

Is the opportunity to turn on a local radio newscast and hear “the accused is currently serving time for throwing a rock at a federal buliding in Fargo”.
Heh.

  1. Unless his name is Ahmed, then CAIR would file a lawsuit claiming that throwing rocks at Zionist Oppressors is a sacred ritual held during Ramadan and imprisoning him in a Gitmo-like facility is in violiation of the separation of church and state promulgated by BushHitlermcChimpyBurtonCheneyevilcabalzionistregime.

  2. And if you don’t mind another 2 cents, one of the things I miss about the US is turning on the radio and NOT hearing CBC, but hearing, Denis Prager, Laura Ingraham, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Michael Medved……

  3. I like the fact that in a great big swath of the western states, you can put 400 miles behind you in considerably less than 5 hours, routinely being passed by locals and even highway patrol cars cruising at just under triple-digit speeds. This spring, we laid down the longest single-sitting drive we’ve ever done- Elko, Nevada to Red Deer (1168 miles) in 17 hours including meals, snack, and gas stops plus a border crossing. Got passed on I-15 in Montana, while running at 85+, by a an older couple in an Olds Aurora running a solid 105. The state trooper coming the other direction at a similar clip didn’t even warrant a glance across the median strip. Quite simply one of the finest days of driving we’ve ever had. Pretty good talk radio down there, too.

  4. Here’s what I heard yesterday on the radio here in the GTA.
Toronto Judge released two American “drifters”, who stabbed a guy to death in the entertainment district after he refused to give them money, because they were not, in his opinion, a “flight risk.”

  5. i was in pennsylvania on labour day weekend and had the misfortune of tuning in to what sounded like “creationist science hour”. utter and complete bull**** being passed off as rigourous science. that i don’t miss about radio in the usa.

  7. rb That’s OK. A number of years ago I was channel flipping and came across David Suzuki pushing Darwinism as if it was sound science too. Not only that but a few years later I heard that same Suzuki pushing AGW as if it were fact. things that make you question.

  8. @Joe: i agree, it’s crazy how science is taught these days. people these days seem to be confusing theory with fact. there is a better way to articulate scientific theory or theology for that matter, but it’s a rare sight and it appears that media has more pressing objectives than accuracy.

  9. Too True rb the media has only one objective and that is to sell advertizing. Just think David Suzuki gets a bully pulpit so CBC can sell Tampons and Dish Soap for their clients.

  10. In Alberta today a 19 year old who was an accomplice to a murder of a young girl, 12 or 13, I believe, was sentenced to LIFE IN PRISON with no chance for parole for 10 years. TEN YEARS! I only wish that he and his 4 friends had been tried and sentenced in perhaps Texas where at the very least life means life.

  11. Oh, Oh, Kate… Time for a federal rock registry????
    (oops… Better not give U.S. Liberals ideas…)

  12. Doug,
All those talk radio hosts are available for free on line streaming radio live every day. I listen to them every day. Some of them have archives and IPOD downloads so you can listen later in the day if you wish.
Just google their names and you will find several stations across the USA that carry their show coast to coast. It’s easy … if you have a computer you can listen.
I would go nuts listening the all liberal radio all the time in this demented dominion.
I will suggest one radio show worth listening to on the week-ends in Canada is the Roy Green show on the corus radio network. Also available on a number of streams such as through CKNW.com in Vancouver … 11-2 pm west coast time. Do the math for your time zone. Roy could fit right in the the American right wing hosts. In fact I am surprised he has a show on Canadian airwaves.

  13. For American talk radio, go to Townhall.com. You can sign up for free full podcasts of Prager and Hewitt. Hewitt is more wonkish and inside the beltway, whereas Prager combines topical shows with stuff that’s more timeless like raising kids, coping with loss, spirituality.
Medved is now subscription only via his homepage. He seems to attract (and/or screen for) the weirdest callers and that alone is pretty entertaining.
I highly recommend Dennis Miller’s new show. Go to Dennismillerradio.com Amazing guest line ups. He is not a doctrinare ideologue, changes his opinions mid-show, and has a more liberal co-host.
Glenn Beck ranges between laugh out loud funny to maudlin and weird.
I have to be in the mood for Rush, too, but when he’s “on” a roll, he’s invigorating.
I download yesterday’s shows on the iPod every morning. If I didn’t have them to listen to at work or in the car I don’t think I could cope.

  14. CRB,
This puke was a young offender at the time of the murder. At least the judge in this case determined that he should be sentenced as an adult and his name published. Had he been sentenced as a young offender, he would onlyu have done three years.

  15. Re: Speed Limits
When Montana eliminated the speed limit on their Interstate highways, the average speed of cars actually dropped. Fewer controls = safer. Speed limits become the automatic minimum speed for most drivers.

  16. “”the accused is currently serving time for throwing a rock at a federal buliding in Fargo”.”
The same lead story has probaby flooded the media of other authoratarian statist regimes through out history… from Rome to Moscow to Havana…no totalistic martial state can have disrespect or dissent of federal commissariate authority….state symbolism is paramount to justice…toss a rock at a Fed building…or one of their tanks in the square, you may as well take a leak on the glorious leader’s shoes.
I say hang the rock throwers…hang ’em all…all hail the great and powerful Oz.

  17. like Kathy Shaidle, I couldn’t cope without downloads of American talk radio – Rush practically everyday (he always puts me a good mood), Dennis Prager from Townhall site on the weekends. Canadian airwaves drive me crazy, raise my blood pressure, or are just so boring (except Michael Coren on CFRB on Sunday evenings).
If you can handle news about Israel and the world from a Torah (Jewish observant) point of view, from someone who is a real “obstacle to peace” settler living in Judea (West Bank), then I highly recommend Deprogram Program (Shai ben Takoa; http://www.deprogramprogram.com)- you have to subscribe but I think he has one or two free shows every week – check it out.

  18. What is there to enjoy about driving in the US?
Much better roads for one thing!
    Much cheaper GAS for another!
Much better SERVICE at hotels and restaurants!
    Much cheaper BOOZE!
Satellite radio makes the whole “What’s on that I can listen to?” question …. moot!

  19. The roads, lots more roads to ride on there are 10 time the mileage of roads in the US, compared to Canada.
I also find the slow drivers will pull to the side and let me by when I am riding my motorcycle. Something Canadian drivers rarely do.

  20. smiling waitresses, not “service with a sneer”
    smooth pavement,
interstates not rollercoaster cowpaths like across northern ontario.

  21. John L. – When Montana eliminated the speed limit on their Interstate highways, the average speed of cars actually dropped.
They only did it for 12 months, but during that period accidents actually declined. That isn’t what was reported in the media, though.

  22. Yeah, I like the friendliness of the Americans, too. And I like the fact that they don’t seem shy–especially in NYC, my favourite place in the U.S.A.–about voicing their opinions on all things, esepecially politics.
Prices are better, choice is better, being a committed Christian and conservative doesn’t make you a redneck yahoo idiot, and there just seems, generally, to be a more generous give and take in the U.S. than in Canada.
We’re all about “official” political correctness up here, whereas our neighbours to the South allow for a rugged individualism that we’ve sent packing.
I feel like hitting the road again…

  23. Having lived down here in the US of A for the last five years I can honestly say that Canadians can learn a lot from Americans. Maybe Canadians are jealous of the yanks, I don’t know except it has seemed like bashing America went from This Hour Has 22 Minutes skits to politicians actively cursing them. The Canuckistan leftards are always ready to trot out the American healthcare card and make fun of American patriotism.
The fact is that Americans aren’t perfect but then nobody is. If it is so bad here then why does everyone want to come here? A boatload of Chinese boat people land on Canadian shores a few years back and almost half don’t show up the next week to get their welfare cheques because they went to America.( via those First Nations reserves btw) They had food, shelter, and instant health care in Canada and still they moved on.
A big difference in travelling in the US is the amount of flags flying here compared to north of the border. Count the Canadian flags on your next trip and compare them with a trip across the border.
One more thing; with the loonie almost at par with the buck, why does most of the Canadian merchandise cost 10 – 25% more? I just compared computer equipment and big screen TVs and there is still a big difference. And that is without GST or Sales Tax.
