Here’s the opportunity Lorne “small dead animals doesn’t speak for the people of Saskatchewan” Calvert has been waiting for to finally drop the writ – I’m off on another dog show road trip that will eventually take me to the eastern US.
I hope to get online every couple of days, but my time (and energy) for blogging will be severely limited.
I’ve written a number of posts (including several reader tips threads) that will appear automatically, but remember that these sometimes malfunction. I’ve arranged for a friend to check for that, but be patient should you get an error message when posting comments.
I should be home by around the 11th. In the meanwhile, surf the other good blogs on the sidebar, be good to the guest bloggers, stay on topic, and ignore the trolls and drive-bys. And wish us luck!

Over at [theospark.blogspot.com] a post titled “something to ponder”.I might add for firstimers Theo has pictures of the NSFW type and that great British sense of humour.Must have something to do with his potatoe farming.

Vancouver’s hookah-parlour owners are celebrating after winning an exemption Thursday from a proposed new bylaw that will ban smoking on most sidewalks in commercial districts, in bus shelters and even in taxis passing through Vancouver.
In giving the bylaw unanimous approval-in-principle, Vancouver city council members bowed to arguments that hookah lounges provide an important cultural space for the city’s Muslims and granted them a temporary exemption.

It’s really hilarious to note the headlines across from each other today at National Newswatch….”Liberal civil war goes public”….and “Liberals ready for election, adviser says.”
It’s delightful to see the Libranos in the state they’re in, it looks so good on them.
Stephen Harper should do whatever it takes to engineer an election because despite what the Liberal lackey pollsters tell you, there is a majority government just waiting to be had.
The Liberals are in disarray like never before, the Bloc has become irrelevant, and the NDP…well, who cares.
Strike while the iron is hot Mr Harper, just like Chretien did when he saw his chance to kick the Alliance when they were down.

Will Media Report Flaw in Manmade Ozone Hole Consensus?
As the world marks 20 years since the introduction of the Montreal Protocol to protect the ozone layer, Nature has learned of experimental data that threaten to shatter established theories of ozone chemistry. If the data are right, scientists will have to rethink their understanding of how ozone holes are formed and how that relates to climate change.
“This must have far-reaching consequences,” Rex says. “If the measurements are correct we can basically no longer say we understand how ozone holes come into being.” What effect the results have on projections of the speed or extent of ozone depletion remains unclear.
As you can imagine, those who have been part of the manmade ozone hole consensus are going to end up scratching their heads when they observe Rex’s results. In fact, the Nature article included some views from astonished scientists:
“Our understanding of chloride chemistry has really been blown apart,” says John Crowley, an ozone researcher at the Max Planck Institute of Chemistry in Mainz, Germany.
“Until recently everything looked like it fitted nicely,” agrees Neil Harris, an atmosphere scientist who heads the European Ozone Research Coordinating Unit at the University of Cambridge, UK. “Now suddenly it’s like a plank has been pulled out of a bridge.”
Fascinating, wouldn’t you agree? After all, these findings bring into question the conventional wisdom on these ozone holes that has existed for decades. Now, things have radically changed. ….-

Gore Dodges Repeated Calls to Debate Global Warming
As over 150 heads of state and government gather at UN headquarters in New York to discuss climate change, former Vice President Al Gore, the most prominent proponent of the theory of the human-induced, catastrophic global warming, continues to refuse repeated challenges to debate the issue.
Czech President Vaclav Klaus, who addressed the General Assembly on climate change September 24, is but the latest global warming skeptic to receive the cold shoulder from Gore. In ads appearing in the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, and Washington Times, Klaus has called on Gore to face him in a one-on-one debate on the proposition: “Global Warming Is Not a Crisis.” Earlier in the year, similar challenges to Gore were issued by Dennis Avery, director of the Center for Global Food Issues and senior fellow at the Hudson Institute, and Lord Monckton of Brenchley, a former adviser to British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. All calls on the former vice president to face his critics have fallen on deaf ears. …-

Memorial University Disallows Pro-Life Group.

PRESS RELEASE
The Death of Free Speech at Memorial University of Newfoundland:
MUN Students’ Union disallows pro-life group
On Wednesday, September 26, the Memorial University of Newfoundland Students’ Union Board of Directors (MUNSU) met for its regularly scheduled meeting. One of the highlights of the agenda was the proposal to ratify, or give official club status to, Memorial University of Newfoundland Students for Life (MUN for LIFE). When it came to this point the meeting, everyone was hesitant to speak. The chair asked for a motion to approve and one was not tabled. A motion to deny was put forth and the flood gates holding back the conversation opened wide. Every speaker, except for one, identified themselves as pro-choice and echoed the comments of the previous speakers. The motion to deny ratification passed nearly unanimous. MUSNU signaled the death of free speech on a university campus.
The dominate arguments brought by MUNSU personalities to deny MUN for LIFE their rights were 1) MUNSU is a local of the pro-choice Canadian Federation of Students (CFS) 2) MUNSU could not ratify a group in opposition to its beliefs.
If MUNSU only ratifies groups that it agrees with, why is it that an assortment groups with competing ideologies are listed on their website. For example, there are Christian, Jewish, Muslim, and Pagan groups. There are Progressive Conservative, Liberal, and New Democratic groups. Surely, MUNSU can not agree with every one of these groups. If MUNSU can grant ratification to these groups, it should be able to allow MUN for LIFE its democratic and university rights to free speech.
If CFS is an obstacle, why it is that a number of other CFS locals have pro-life groups? A small example of these would be the Universities of British Columbia, Toronto, Dalhousie, Carleton, and Saskatchewan. Once again, MUNSU is grasping at straws for excuses to silence the voice of the pro-life movement. MUN for LIFE members have paid CFS and MUNSU union dues and must now be granted their rights to free speech and association.
In November 2006 the Carleton University Students’ Association passed a motion to silence pro-life student groups on their campus. As a result, Carleton Lifeline’s ratification was placed in jeopardy. A heated debate, which attracted national media coverage, ended in Carleton Lifeline’s membership increasing and work continuing.
Patrick Hanlon, the President of MUN for LIFE, is encouraging his fellow union members and all concerned individuals, regardless of their position on life issues, to demand MUNSU to immediately reverse the decision made at the September 26 meeting. If this decision is not reversed, a dangerous precedent is set in place for MUNSU, and other Student Unions in Canada, which would allow the silencing of any other group that a union wishes not to have democratic and university rights.

Dear Howard, I thank you for this very timely editorial. Many of our readers face the same quandary that you have articulated in this editorial and may find your thoughts on the upcoming election very useful in their own mental struggles. Many Ontarians have been spooked by the increasing Islamist terrorism on the international scene and are very nervous about John Tory’s suggestion to extend public funding to other faiths. Many are considering not voting for the Conservatives mainly because of this fear. Personally, I think that it is better to have the teachings of any school under public scrutiny than allow them to teach anything they want (which is what is happening now anyway). As far as the Liberals are concerned – the McGuinty/Meilleur team is intent on making Ontario officially bilingual (I have proof) and for that alone, I could never vote for them.
As for the MMP referendum, this is designed to give more power to small parties that would never otherwise get voted in and this will eventually result in a pizza parliament. As Ontario is a mainly socialist province, this will result in more power to the many left-wing parties (God forbid!). If anyone reading this message wants more information on the MMP referendum & why it is not good for Ontarians, please contact me.
The only way we can make language an issue in this coming election is to attend an all-candidates meeting & ask one of the following two questions:
1. Has your party any plans or will support the move to make Ontario officially bilingual?
2. Liberals are going to fund a francophone secretariat. Why was this hidden in the Budget?
This is the only way we can make the uninformed public aware of the Liberal agenda on official bilingualism. Don’t waste this opportunity to ask a question that they cannot ignore, like they ignore our letters.

Why I Voted Against McGuinty And PR Thursday, September 27, 2007
Ontario Election ’07 By Howard Galganov
Anne and I live in a small rural community in South Eastern Ontario, which is located about 45 minutes from Montreal’s West Island, and about an hour from Ottawa.
In terms of location, location, location – it’s perfect for us.
We moved to this area about 7 years ago to get away from the horrific politics of the province of Quebec, where all taxes are outrageously high, and the government feels compelled to intrude into the personal lives of its residents. Not to forget to mention Quebec’s unique brand of ethnocentric nationalism.
For us, a more Conservative Ontario was the answer. But we didn’t want to move too far away from our family, friends and medical support structure. So here we are.
Then all of a sudden Dalton McGuinty happened.
McGuinty is Ontario’s current Premier (equivalent to a US Governor), who is now running for reelection. He is a social micro managing tax hungry lying Liberal.
When one calls someone a liar in voice or in print, he or she better be very careful to be able to back up such a statement for fear of being sued for defamation. But in McGuinty’s case, I’m fine. He is a liar.
During his first election campaign, he actually signed a pledge not to raise taxes, which went out the window the moment he was declared the winner.
He set the stage to make Ontario a bilingual province (English/French), even though Ontario’s French speaking community numbers only 5% of the total population.
He has stood by like a silent dummy as Ottawa picked Ontario’s pockets to send our tax dollars to ethnocentric Quebec.
He has bloated the bureaucracy and sucked-up big time to the unions. And he has done nothing positive for small businesses. I mean nothing!
He has also introduced a new voting structure that would see our First Past The Post system, which we now have, combined to a Proportional Representative (PR) system similar to what exists in politically gridlocked countries like Italy and Israel.
Conservative leader John Tory, who is a relatively bland person without much apparent vision, leads the opposition. To his credit, he wants (or so he says) less government and lower taxes.
The thing about Tory that really sets me off though, is his stated policy of funding religious schools.
In Ontario, there are two school systems funded by public tax dollars. There is the public school board, which is void of all religious specific education. And there is the Catholic school board, which teaches Creationism through the Catholic Bible.
Tory wants to add all religious specific schools to the public purse.
To me, this is an outrage. I do not want one penny of my tax dollars going to teach a Moslem about Allah, a Christian about Christ, a Jew about Abraham, a Buddhist about Buddha or Hindus about Vishnu.
Because McGuinty is a liar and a micro meddling Putz, and Tory wants to mix religion and public money for education, I was compelled not to vote in this upcoming Ontario election.
But not voting is wrong. So I thought seriously about going to the polls to destroy my ballot. But I didn’t want to do that either.
I decided to vote. And this is how I arrived at my decision.
McGuinty is a liar and a micro manager. He gets his government involved in social engineering where none is needed. And he wants to bilingualize Ontario where the linguistic minority is so small that there is no reason for it at all.
John Tory wants religious specific education paid for by the public purse. But it already is, since the Catholics have their own school system paid for by all Ontario taxpayers. So, if the Catholics can be funded by the public purse, why not everyone else?
I cannot bring myself to vote for a meddling liar like McGuinty. And not to vote directly against him would perhaps be like voting for him. So yesterday, I bit the ballot (so as to speak), and voted for the Conservative John Tory in the advance poll.
I also voted in Ontario’s referendum on changing or keeping the government status quo between the existing First Past The Post, or a combination of First Past the Post and Proportional Representation.
I voted to keep First Past The Post.
As I see it, we already have too much government. We don’t need more. I also see this second option that includes limited proportional representation as confusing, ponderous and yet another way to create new stifling bureaucracies.
This combination of First Past the Post and Proportional Representation is a perfect example of a government that wants to become bigger. If we could cut our government size by half, that wouldn’t be enough.
There’s also going to be a real problem at the polls.
When we arrived (Anne and myself), we were the only people there to vote. We were asked for our voting card, and waited until they found our names on the master list.
They also asked for one piece of photo ID with an address, which they then examined and presented to the person who hands out the ballots.
The person whose job it is to hand out the ballots asked us where we lived, as she looked at the ID. Her job was to make certain that we knew the information that was on the piece of photo ID we submitted. Then we were given the ballots.
This process took several minutes each. Can you imagine what it will be like when several million people show up to cast their votes on Election Day?
Surprisingly though, the only question they did not ask, which they should have asked was: ARE YOU A CANADIAN CITIZEN since only Canadian citizens are allowed to vote in any Canadian election from municiple to national?
I write this because an American friend of mine, who is not Canadian, is on the voters list, even though she has repeatedly told those responsible to remove her name due to her nationality.
According to what Anne and I went through at the polls, this friend of ours would have been allowed to vote, since her driver’s license is Ontarian and her address is in the riding.
Instead of a referendum for Proportional Representation and a much bigger more complicated government, perhaps we should have a referendum on the need to have a voter’s ID card.
In conclusion: I won’t tell you how to vote. But now you know how I voted and why.

“Europe Should Deport all its 20 Million Muslims”
Republican Presidential Candidate Tom Tancredo told a Danish journalist that Europe Should Deport its 20 Million Muslims. This was last night on the first episode of a mini-documentary series on America, Clement in America.
If Tancredo became president, I wonder if he’d deport the Muslims in America? Hey, I’d vote for him. Imagine the tax savings from cuts to security, less hassles at the airport, the end of the hissing snakes at CAIR and the Muslim student association, etc, no special prayer rooms and foot wash basins in public institutions, no more muslim cab driver discrimination against blind people with guide dogs, not to mention a lot less fear about domestic terrorist attacks.
A fantastic idea. Hope it catches on.
On a far less serious note…

Will the so-called ‘Third Industrial Revolution’ fall flat on it’s face when the taxpayer gets tired of the game ??
Try exporting solar power devices that are not competitive.
Or electric cars that are only feasible ‘around town’.
Or wind power that is unreliable and hugely expensive.
If it works, fine –all the more power to them. However, it could all make a country uncompetitive in the world and lower it’s standard of living. All for the sake of maybe, maybe 0.5 degrees warmer. A hundred years from now.
[But would there be a third industrial revolution without the taxpayer? While Germany is creating green jobs, the effort comes at a price. Half of the capital cost of Arise’s German factory was financed by a government grant (because it’s being built in the job-challenged former East Germany). If that weren’t enough, the government used legislation to guarantee a solar market. Demand for solar energy equipment is driven by Germany’s Renewable Energies Act, passed in 2000. The law requires power companies to purchase energy from renewable resources at a fixed price three or four times higher than the market price.]G&M

The favoured option was to have Adrian’s boat transported through the ice onboard one of the ice-breaker ships bound for Murmansk…

The price had been cut by 60% but was still double the original quote. This was a face-saving compromise, a big pill to swallow but not so big it would stick in my craw. James Purnell found himself in an embarrassing situation over the disclosure just two weeks after he warned broadcasters of the danger of losing the trust of viewers. The controversy centred on a photocall at Tameside general hospital, Greater Manchester, to mark the start of work on a new unit. Mr Purnell was among four local MPs invited to the event, but he arrived after the photograph been taken and the other MPs had left.
He was photographed in the same position and his image was added into the earlier shot. The picture was then distributed to the local press….-
