The Sound Of Settled Science

GHCN-1900.gif
GHCN stations with mean temperature data from present to the year 1900.
For those who say

that “the USA only has 2% of the worlds area, so it really doesn’t matter”, I’d point out this graphic from NCDC which shows the distribution of weather stations that have mean temperature records going back to 1900. The USA makes up the lions share of the weather stations in the world with complete data sets spanning 100 years.

Be sure to read the whole thing.

  1. I hope you are keeping all this in a file somewhere Kate. It would be nice if someone could pull them for reference.

  2. Kinda puts the weather station vandalism by NASA up to the front of the line for reasons to doubt Glow Ball Warming.
    “Over the last hundred years, as US urbanization increased, more and more weather stations ended up in parking lots next to air conditioners.”
    “This increased the global temperature, melted the glaciers and killed all the polar bears and fluffy bunnies.”

  3. How on Earth could the Kyoto Kult ever think they would get away with such a blatantly lame attempt at fudging and cover up ??
    And what of those Canadians who bought into the scam ?? Especially Anderson, Chretien, Kinsella, Martin, Dion.
    They could not all be that dumb, so the only thing that makes sense, IMO;
    They knew the AGW science was phoney. (Jane Stewart said as much when she was the minister)
    They knew it was a religion and so it did not matter that eventualy the Steve McIntyres and the Anthony Watts of the world would inevitably, someday, expose the scam.
    I think what the Kult miscalculated was the speed with which the exposure came. Thanks to the Internet and blogs. Without sda, CA and others, Maurice Strong’s followers may have had a century in the sun. Ten years was long enough.

  4. I am not sure I follow what is being said here. The fact that there are so many stations in the US does not detract from the fact that the US is only 2% of the world’s surface area. I don’t see a “gotch-ya” here.

  5. John,
    I don’t know about gotcha’s but the NCDC admitting “Because most instrumental networks were established to monitor local weather and not the long-term climate, there are practical problems in using these data to study climate change.” is kind of telling.
    Also, the US may be on 2% of the world but looking at the map, it looks like only 10% of the world’s landmass is covered with stations(Not included the oceans in that case, probable less on 2% worldwide coverage, just a guess from looking at the map). and the US has the best coverage. Maybe that’s the lack of coverage is the “gotcha”.

  6. It’s all us left wing kooks as compared to all you right wing kooks. I’d believe David Suzuki over you crazies. The rest of the world and everyone against global warming are all left wing kooks. You guys are speaking in tongues. And people vote your idiots in. You can lead the people to the poles but you can’t make them think.

  7. Quoth John Cross: “The fact that there are so many stations in the US does not detract from the fact that the US is only 2% of the world’s surface area. I don’t see a “gotch-ya” here.”
    Too many thermometers with barbecues under them John. The bulk of the measurements are being taken in the USA, where we know the network has been deliberately biased to the hot side. We know this due to photographic evidence of it.
    Can you say “scam” John? Try it with me now, sssscaaaammmmmm. Now use it in a sentence. “Global Warming is a …”

  8. Phantom: Let me try: The paper in Climate Research by Soon was a scam Hey, what do you know, that was easy! 😉
    The bulk of the measurements may be taken in the US, but that gives the US no more weight in calculating the surface temperature than other areas.
    Regards,
    John

  9. As well as underscoring the significance of errors in the US data given the sheer number of stations in the US, the map also shows just how spotty the ground station coverage actually is.
    Note the total absence of stations in the Canadian or Russian High Arctic. Or the Antarctic (though that may be an effect of the map’s projection.)The Equatorial regions are sparsely stationed and, hey, what’s the weather obsession in Sri Lanka about.
    One would think that with the billions being committed to the whole GW routine the first order of business would be to create a serious grid of weather stations worldwide. That is, if the climate scientists thought ground stations actually provided useful information.

  10. Holy crap!!! Are you guys gonna publish all this stuff, or just sit on it?!? The world needs your genius!!!

  11. i get so tired of the crap. over and over lies, more lies. the damn plant will grow or shut down whether we are here or not. stupid people.

  12. Who do you think would be a better source of information;
    a) A person of average intelligence telling the truth.
    b) A very intelligent person who has an agenda.
    Scammers are usually much smarter than others around them —- that is why they succeed. At least for a while.

  13. How about a person of average intelligence repeating the talking points of another dimwit who is paid by someone with an agenda? And where does the dimwit echo chamber fit in?
    How do you decide what’s the truth is, and who has an agenda? Is that up to the intelligent person or the dimwit?

  14. Kate, give it up. You’re not a scientist. You’re an uneducated armchair blogger who’s greatest talent is painting mediocre portraits of dogs. There are a lot of other indicators which show temperature variations on the planet that are consistent with the bulk of conclusions on climate change.

  15. First, Hansen said the US, with most of the stations , didn’t matter because of the .15 degree difference. Now that he’s been forced to release his code, he’s says South America and Africa don’t matter either.
    As McIntyre states — “So United States shows no material change since the 1930s, but this doesn’t matter, South America doesn’t matter, Africa doesn’t matter and Antarctica has no records relevant to the 1930s. Europe and northern Asia would seem to be plausible candidates for locating Waldo. (BTW we are also told that the Medieval Warm Period was a regional phenomenon confined to Europe and northern Asia – go figure.]”

  16. … hey, what’s the weather obsession in Sri Lanka about

    Well, the Brits were ruling Sri Lanka 100 years ago, and they’re more obsessed with weather than we Yanks.

  18. There are few things more amusing in running this site than reading anonymous drive-bys question my intelligence as they struggle with the concept of quoting.

  19. Oh, all those thermometers in the US? Well I guess this mean global warming isn’t true after all. I guess Al Gore and David Suzuki can now put all the ice back in the Arctic, Antarctic, Greenland and the glaciers that they stole. I guess all the weather patterns that have been altered over the past few years should go back to the way they were. The satellites, tree rings and climate models can stop indicating a global temperature rise. I guess the deep-sea temperature can once again cool off to where it was a few short decades ago and the oceanic ph balance can reverse it’s current negative trend. Gee what a climate breakthrough, American thermometers.
    Ok sarcasm off. Do you really think your denial argument could get any sillier than this?

  20. Interesting in that, with a third of the (USA) stations surveyed, Surfacestations has found a large majority of the stations impared by local site factors. I had thought that at least some of the recent uptick was due to the changeover from mercury bulb thermometers to automated units, but I didn’t think it was quite this bad. What is especially distressing is that the US network was supposed to be “the best”.

  21. A lot of the internet posted articles refer to the Antarctic ice shelves as “melting”, but if you read what the scientists have to say, they are really discussing ice calving, not melting. Calving can be more closely associated with increased winds than with some of the standard AGW causes.

  22. Some glaciers are melting — some are growing. Been happening since time began.
    Sometimes they grow to a kilometer or two in thickness !! Over Canada !!
    But the point of Kate’s post;
    Yes the climate has recently warmed — no one is dening that. It will also cool again. No one should deny that either. Our climate has ALWAYS been changing.
    The Gore and Suzuki fear-mongers are helped by the sleaze of Hansen et al. Through poor placement of weather stations ect, they intentionaly skew the temps to the up side. They also just simply manipulate the data. Helps with the headlines — ‘worse-than-we-thought’, blah blah.
    They have been caught red handed and are having to admit it.
    Now once again. Tell me, which would you prefer for Canada;
    One degree warmer ?
    Or trying to survive under a kilometer of ice ??

  23. What??? Oh now wait a minute!

    “Yes the climate has recently warmed — no one is dening that.”
    So why are these armchair deniers quibbling over the temperature sensors?

  24. simple alby.
    2% of the earth surface has 90% of the record . just because 2% goes up in temperature doesnt mean the other 98% follows.
    now go back to adding DNA samples to the bottom of your socks.

  25. We use more fossil fuels here in North America than any other continent. That’s a fact. We should be more frugal like western europe. We’re about 20 years behind them in recycling etc.

  26. 100 years ago a lot of the world was unknown. At least a lot of it was. Who cared about temp? The USA uses more fossil fuels than 80% of the world. Why not use electric trains and buses? Europe has been paying 2.00 a litre for gas for years. I see all the big SUVs out there and I wonder who are they trying to impress? You can’t get people to conserve as long as the gov’t says waste.Tax the hell out of SUV’s unless they are required for your livlihood. Iused to work with guys that drove trucks that were the size of a small house.
    We can’t keep wasting our resources like that. As I’ve said before we all would be a lot better off if we conserve. Europe learned this years ago.
    It’s not just left wing kooks it’s a fact.
