UPDATE This 2004 report sheds a bit more light on the actions of Sacha Bond. As it turns out, the gun was loaded after all;
Islamorada – An Islamorada man was arrested Saturday just before 4 a.m. after he pulled a gun inside an Islamorada bar and began pulling the trigger.
Fortunately for the people he was shooting at, the first four times 19 year old Sacha Bond pulled the trigger, he was firing on empty chambers. Deputies who recovered the gun found only two bullets inside. He was tackled by employees and patrons of the bar just before firing on one of the live rounds.
The incident occurred at Woody’s Bar in Islamorada. Bond was inside and reportedly failed to compensate the entertainer who was performing for him so he was asked to leave. He returned a few minutes later, pulled out a revolver, pointed it at the people inside and began to pull the trigger. After he pulled the trigger four times without discharging a bullet, two employees and a patron of the bar tackled him to the ground.
Deputies James Freed, Alvin Burns and Joseph Moran were called to the scene and when they arrived, they found Bond still being held on the ground. A search turned up a holster for the gun clipped to his belt and a knife in his pocket. He was bleeding from a cut on his forehead and he was taken to Mariner’s hospital for treatment of the minor injury. He was then charged with four counts of attempted murder, four counts of aggravated assault and he was booked into the Monroe county Detention Center. There is no bond allowed on the charges.
What motivated CTV’s Kathy Tomlinson to whitewash the facts of this case to the extent she did in this so-called “whistleblower” segment?
(h/t reader Ann.)
Between this headline…
Gunman Kills Four In Florida Strip Bar
and this one?
Mentally-ill Man’s Family Fights To Get Him Home
Answer: forgetting the bullets.
It’s a not-so-subtle distinction that manages to elude CTV’s Kathy Tomlinson – who apparently believes that “exposing” Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day as a man who won’t accept “drunk and off his medication” as an excuse for attempted murder elevates this bit of apologist journalism to “whistleblower” status.
In January, 2004, Sacha Bond was in Florida visiting his mother, who was living there temporarily. He wasn’t taking the prescribed medication which controls his mental illness and behavior. Late one night, he took his mother’s car out to a strip bar in the Florida Keys. He was 19 and underage, but still, the bar served him approximately 10 drinks. While intoxicated, Bond got into an argument with a bouncer, who threw him out.
“I don’t remember very much,” Bond told CTV News, in an interview inside the prison.
Police records show Bond came back to the bar with his stepfather’s gun, and pointed it at several people. He tried to fire it, but there were no bullets in the chambers. Bar staff tackled him, roughed him up and called the police.
“All I remember is when I dropped on the ground and they were beating me up,” said Bond.
Beat him up? He should be thankful they didn’t kill him. Florida is a “shall issue” state.
Bad choices, bad consequences. But they could have been worse – he might have emerged from his self-inflicted drunken stupor long enough to load the gun.
Related trivia: psychologist Dr. Merry Sue Haber is quoted in the CTV report;
“You have a young person who has a future,” Dr. Haber told CTV News, in Miami. “And who, really, without drugs and alcohol and on the proper medication is not dangerous at all.”
Dr. Haber has a history. She took conducted now discredited “memory retrievals” in the infamous Country Walk “ritual child abuse” case;
Q. All right. Now I want to get back again to these — the sessions that you had, because the next names on my list here are Dr. Rappaport and Dr. Haber.
Do you recall if — when they would start these sessions what would they say to you? Do you recall what they would say?
A. No. I can hardly remember. This has been so long. You know, I remember just that I will calm down, and I just wanted to get it over with because, you know, they told me this happened, this happened, this happened.
And I will break down and say no, no, no, it didn’t happen.
And then they would tell me that yes, I have to accept it, I have to confront it. So they were long sessions and tiring. I just remember that that was the procedure.
And I would go to bed, and I don’t know why, but I would dream about the same things the kids were saying and the same things they were telling me.
So I came back, and the first question was so what did you dream about last night, did you have any bad dreams or did you not. If I had bad dreams had to tell them about my bad dreams in detail. And they did tell me, you see, you remembering.

What’s worse than Tomlinson’s Bond fantasy, is the fact that she reported it in order to put the Honourable Stockwell Day and the CPC in a bad light: the favourite indoor sport of the Canadian MSM and PPG.
These pseudo-reporters are like alligators slithering out of the swamp. Snap! Snap! “Let’s see who we can devour today.”
‘The reason I trust very little that I hear or see on Canada’s “news” networks.
Dave in Pa…..you are wasting your time trying to reason with a leftard like Adam. He is a socialist nutbar, much like your Pelosi,T.Kennedy,etc. They do not respond to reason, they only spew hatred and ad hominen crap. These are the same people who support terrorists,as long as it can get them votes,or before they lose their heads. They have no idea of love of country,or even of their own families, as long as they can gain power.Plain and simple…power. They will send us all to our deaths if we let them.Well this redneck, knuckledragger has a surprise for them. They will die long before me and my family.I believe in justice and self-defence,something,luckily,which is foriegn to them.
We wouldn’t be arguing with the rectal-cranial displacia of the left over this if things had played out properly and an armed citizen in the bar dispatched this gun weilding goblin.
Then Tomlinson and sundry degenerate left partisans could argue over where the corpse of an attempted murderer would be buried.
. And you can make your claims because you’ve magically been able to divine Mr. Bond’s family’s political leanings (duh! obviously liberal!) from the scant information provided by the CTV report.

“Sacha”.
Mr. Stockwell is my member of parliament and has my 100% support on this one. a question for the hard left. when is your revolution going to start? i’m guessing you folks have to find your backbones first.
Dave in Pa: It’s a moot point because the Sacha Bond case — the topic of this particular thread — doesn’t involve the US gov’t failing to honour its bilateral treaty obligations. So, while your comparison to Canada failing or not failing to extradite war deserters is itself an important topic of debate, it is irrelevant to the current discussion.
Having said that, two questions for you, Dave (the second may be treated as rhetorical):
1. Has the US submitted an extradition request, also required by the treaty, for any of the deserters living in Canada? As far I can recall, they have not, but I may be wrong.
2. Justthinkin warns that I’m incapable of reason. But really, based on the comments posted on this thread, who sounds more unreasonable — me, or someone who characterizes me as a “leftard” “socialist nutbar” who “only spew[s] hatred and ad hominen crap,” “support[s] terrorists,” and has “no idea of love of country, or even of their own families”?
WLMR: “In a polite civil society miscreants who would randomly murder innicent bystanders are quickly dispatched by either law enforcement or the law’s auxillery force; an armed citizen.”
“We wouldn’t be arguing with the rectal-cranial displacia of the left over this if things had played out properly and an armed citizen in the bar dispatched this gun weilding goblin.”
Your bravado is impressive, but let’s not forget that armed citizens dispatching would-be felons is an extremely rare event. Even in the US, only 119 justifiable homicides by private citizens involving handguns occurred in 2005 (law enforcement officers added another 337; FBI Crime in the US 2005).
Less rare is the accidental dispatching of innocent victims via unintentional firearm discharges, with around 700 or so such deaths occurring annually (based on 1999-2004 trends, as 2005 data not yet available; CDC). Apparently, in “a polite civil society,” upstanding citizens unintentionally but fatally shoot themselves or others about 5 times more often than they fatally shoot bad guys. (And yes, yes, I know all about the arguments that one needn’t fire a gun for it to be an effective self-defense tool. I’m responding only to your specific claim about armed citizens successfully shooting criminals dead.)
“What motivated CTV’s Kathy Tomlinson to whitewash the facts” ?
My turn.
Could it be the same thing that causes adam ,albatross, jose, and lberia to post the same easily defeated leftard dribble on every one of Kate’s posts that do damage?
It would be great to have a response from Day firmly outlining Tomlinson’s inadequate ‘reporting’ where the ‘facts’are left out. The media hate the CPC anyway, I wish they would start calling them on their bad job.It isn’t just a matter of labelling the bias…their work is unprofessional and they are accountable to no one.
We can only hope most of us are onto the MSM biased reporting and the spinning of the facts which are as close to outright lies as anyone can get.
The blatant, spurious attempt by Tomlinson to make Stockwell Day look like an uncaring person is something none of us should tolerate.
It may be a sad story for the Leftards and their fifth column in the MSM who are on a mission to oust the Conservatives but the chain of events in the Bond escapade prove otherwise.
Madam Tomlinson disgraced herself with every utterance form her shiny lips.
The Conservative government had nothing to do with the actions of Bond and he has to take full responsibility for his actions.
Much can be said for personal responsibility and also family responsibility. Too many parents are slagging off their responsibilities and failures on society for various reasons.
It starts with breakfasts in schools where parents are absolved from giving their kids nourishment before they set off for school, a good place to start the Lefty creep.
It’s all about responsibility. If we can’t be responsible for ourselves there is no hope.
Well said, Liz J.
I sure hope someone at CTV is taking notes.
I agree…we are talking ‘responsibility’, and CTV has to take responsibility…
waiting…
Gunman Bond, aka “nutcase”, is still in Florida.
I’m in Canada.
I say, I like the situation as it is…..
OK, I have read enough..I am Sacha’s aunt. First and foremost, we did not know that he was off his meds.He is Bi-Polar, he is not schizophrenic. Also, it is not the fault of his mother, as some of you have written, simply said, you do not know it all, and your quick judgement and quick responses are very typical. People who have mental illnesses have an addictive personality, especially to drugs.
It was a bad thing that occurred, and he is paying for it, no one has ever said that he should not be be incarcerated for his actions. He is!
But the point of this is that he is Canadian, and if this would of occurred to an American in Canada, they would of gradly sent him back. The law is the law, and should apply to all.
Everyone is entitled to an opinion, however, please keep an open mind, things are not always as they appear.
things are not always as they appear.
If you are referring to his crime, then, what was it that the jury that convicted him overlooked?
Hi Penny, The Jury did not take his mental illness into consideration. Sacha is well aware that what he did was wrong. Now let’s move on to rehabilitate him in Canada!
“Consideration”? Are you saying his defense attorney never raised that? I’m married to an attorney. Give me a break. The jury considered it and discarded it. End of story. You can end that BS.
Sasha stays in Florida. End of story. I’m sorry for your inconvenience. Dead Americans, if the chambers of his gun had not been by luck empty, of which I’m one, would have been a bigger inconvenience to us.
How many aunts does this idiot have?
Hi Penny, Florida State does not take his mental disorder into consideration and yes, his defence lawyer presented it. Ask your husband to check the caselaw in Florida before you start name calling… FYI, Sacha only has two maternal aunts. He is not an idiot, he is bipolar.
Just the facts…did he commit a crime? Yes is he being punished for that crime? Yes, now the only question is where he should serve his time. According to the Canadian Constitution, A Canadian can NOT be refused entry into his own country…Sacha Bond IS a Canadian, and therefore should be sent to Canada where he can serve his time, in his language (french), and in an institution where he will be treated for his bipolar, and where he can learn a trade, so that when he does get out he can give back to socity and not be a burden to. I do not agree with what Sacha did, he was wrong and he could have taken someone’s life…..but let us not turn this human being into a sponge of crime, because that is the only thing he will learn at a human warehouse full of criminals with no chance of anything else. Sent him back to Canada where he can pay for his mistake, and maybe he can become a rehabilitated part of the Canadian society, not another American statistic
“He is not an idiot, he is bipolar.”
Begging your pardon, but if he’s bipolar and he:
a) Went off his meds AND
b) Goes to the bar to get tanked AND
c) Carries a loaded gun around
…then he most certainly IS an idiot. And before you try to tell me I can’t understand what he’s going through, I’m schizophrenic, bipolar, a recovering alcoholic, and a recovering drug addict (narcotics & amphetamines).
I’ve walked more than a mile in Sacha’s shoes and am quite aware of how much of his current predicament was caused by him exercising his free will. He made a series of rather obvious choices that caused him to derail. No different than a drunk driver getting tanked up and then driving through a crowd during a blackout, really. The jury was quite right to disregard his mental illness.
I’m not really torn up if he doesn’t get to come back to Canada. Part of getting better is taking your lumps when you screw up.
Louise – if his attorney presented his mental status to the jury, then, they did consider it. They dismissed as not applicable to their verdict. I’m sorry I said idiot.
Reading the article again I don’t understand why his sentence appeal here versus transfer to Canada was an either/or situation as adviced by the Canadian consulate. Transfering to a bordering state prison closer to family, if possible, would probably screw up his appeal process here. I would think that now that his transfer is denied he needs to work on his appeal. His attorney is his best resource.
I feel very sorry for his mother and the family.
Brent, your comparisons of prison systems don’t matter. He committed the crime here. It’s a moot point as to who has better quality services in their prisons.
This is directed to the IDIOT named “Sean” who seems to have nothing else to do with his time but lash out at people which he knows nothing about.

Being all of the above does not make you an expert on what happened.
First of all no one was hurt, Yes you heard me No one , except him.
What can you do when you go into a strange and sleezy strip bar all alone and you do not know anyone there and you get in trouble.
The only witnesses are the so called victims. There were no nutral witness , yes a big Zero witness on his side.
A strip bar that fed drink to an underage kid who was not asked for ID before paying for the cover charge.
There were no bullets discharged and 3 of the 4 so called victims said they called 911, there was only 1 911 call and it was made my Albert Salzinsky the manager of the Bar which was played at the hearing, who in my opinion is 5 short of a 6 pack.
Slazinsky said in court that he was hiding behind the bar when he called 911 which was as soon as the guy entered the bar. Then he tells the judge that he was the first one that had the gun pointed at his head, come on. Then 2 others said that they were the first one who had the gun pointed towards them, and the other said that he didn’t point the gun at anyone , he was just waving the gun around and not pointing it at anyone in particular , the guy was speaking spanish so no one had any idea what was said.
What can you do in a bar at closing time with 4 Red Necks working as managerial staff.
I have no Idea how old you are but , haven’t you been 19 years old, yea a lot of people screw up, and he did in a major way that i’m sure he will regret for the rest of his life. But the kid did not deserve the sentence that was given to him.
And he does not Deserve to be denied access to return to his own country to finish the remainder of his sentence. He does not deserve to rot in jail for 20 years .
Stockwell Day has no right to leave him there and deny him his right to return to Canada under the Treaty and refuse his Request for International Transfer back to his own country. “stating that he is a treat to the Security of Canada”
Stockwell Day does not want to have anyone returned to Canada. He has no right to determine that someone deserves to litarally ROT in jail for 20 years as he did. To decide the someone deserves to be treated as such as he is in the Dade Correctional Facility in Florida City.
Having such Power makes him greater than God.
Yes there was a gun, it had 2 bullets no shots were fired , no one got hurt, except him when he was beaten up the only charge he should of received was gun possession probably max of 10 years not 20 years of hell, without any rehabilitation, proper medication, no therapy, no decent meals.
Being refused by your own government is Unaceptable.

Pauline – this thread will soon be off of Kate’s site. Florida is a tough place to be incarcerated in, more so than many other states, I know how firsthand how underfunded their state services are.
I hope that Sasha has good legal counsel. He has the right to an appeal and I hope that is being worked on. He’s a teenager and salvageable.
My comments earlier reflected my skepticism having seen too often psych used as an instrument of abuse in providing an alibi for what is just bad behavior. Not hearing the evidence, I should not judge.
It is over the top to imply that Sasha is a danger to Canada and I’m sure that attitude is driven by Canadian pc attitudes and politcal posturing toward guns in general.
Again, I feel very sorry for Sasha’s family.
“This is directed to the IDIOT named “Sean” who seems to have nothing else to do with his time but lash out at people which he knows nothing about.”
Pretty safe bet to say that I know more about mental illness and addiction that you do. Heck, I even own a copy of DSM IV and I read quite a few psychiatric publications (know thy enemy).
“Yes there was a gun, it had 2 bullets no shots were fired , no one got hurt, except him when he was beaten up the only charge he should of received was gun possession probably max of 10 years not 20 years of hell,”
Do you not understand ANYTHING about how the criminal justice system works? The gun was loaded and that means the INTENT to cause harm was there. The judge and jury have to take that into account both in trials in the U.S. and Canada.
The gun was loaded and Sacha was pulling the trigger. That’s the crux of the matter.
“without any rehabilitation, proper medication, no therapy, no decent meals.”
You’re apparently not so familiar with the mental health care system in Canada. I’ve been in it and I can tell you that there is practically no rehabilitation and very little therapy. No decent meals, either.
I’ve also done volunteer work in Canadian prisons (with other alkies) and I’m pretty certain that Sacha is more likely to receive the rehab he needs in a Canuck prison than he is to receive it in our mental health care system. The food in prison (that they served to the volunteers, at least) was also better than the fare in most hospitals.
“I have no Idea how old you are but , haven’t you been 19 years old, yea a lot of people screw up, and he did in a major way that i’m sure he will regret for the rest of his life.”
Yes, I did dumb things when I was 19. Last I checked that didn’t include trying to shoot anyone, however. Streaking 8th avenue mall in Calgary doesn’t exactly put me in Sacha’s league.
It may surprise you to learn this, but there is a rather large contingent of mentally ill people out there who are sick and tired of morons like Sascha go off their meds, do something stupid, and then run crying for the protection of the mental health care system they shrugged off in the first place when they refused their meds.
We’re tired of living with the stigma of people like Sacha. We’re tired of everyone thinking that we’re all axe murderers who are going to start swinging the moment our meds wear off.
(Note: while I function most of the time without meds, I do it with the supervision, and blessing of, my psychiatrist who I am in regular contact with.)
“It is over the top to imply that Sasha is a danger to Canada and I’m sure that attitude is driven by Canadian pc attitudes and politcal posturing toward guns in general.”
And not at all driven by the fact that the only thing that kept him from being an actual murderer are the actions of a few concerned citizens and the fact that he’s too stupid to load a gun properly?
To reiterate: there were bullets in the gun and he was pulling the trigger. The intent to murder was there.
Let me tell you something I have learned over many years of dealing with alcoholics and the mentally ill. Those who tend towards violence when they’re drunk or off their meds generally have the same inclinations when they are sober or taking pills. It’s all a matter of how much impulse control they have at the time. If the control is removed, the impulses — which are ALWAYS there with this crowd — come to the forefront.
Sacha’s a very ugly person inside; the booze and bipolar disorder just give you a better glimpse of it than with most people.
“Stockwell Day does not want to have anyone returned to Canada.”
Stockwell Day is a bible punching freak who has been entirely too friendly with Jim Keegstra in the past for me to ever want to shake his hand should I run into him in person. However, even a stopped clock is right twice a day and this must be Stockwell’s time of day. I think he’s right to perceive Sacha as a threat to his fellow citizens here in Canada.
I sympathize with your need to protect a family member, but my own feeling is that your concern for Sacha is blinding you to certain realities.
Well well ” good for you ” Sean you own a book.
I know for a fact that Sacha was raised in a great family environment in a good family. He played hockey for many years and was great at it too and also many other sports.
He was not raised with any guns around him. No one hunted or had any weapons in his surrounding.
What happened was an isolated incident.
What he did was bad , he knows that. no one regrets the actions that were done that night more than him.
The whole trial was a big joke and he had alot of grounds to appeal, the whole trial was a big joke. But if you know anything about the justice system, you would know that if you apply for an appeal: the process is very long up to 3 years and while you wait you need to be waiting in the Detention center, you cannot apply for an International Transfer until you are sentence and sent to a Correctional Facility, which means you can’t do both . He needed to make a decision and he did thinking it was the best one.
He was advised by the Canadian Consulate in Miami to send his application for a transfer and that he would probably have no problem being returned.
Sacha had no prior criminal record, ZERO this was an isolated incident. No one is asking to bring him back to Canada and just put him on the street for god sakes.
He needs to be close to his family and friends and know what is going on in his own Country. Being in a florida prison is like being in a bubble.
The fact of him being bipolar was not made up just for the trial and try to get out of what he did.
All of his medical records from Canada and the medical records from the U.S. hospital who diagnosed him to be suffering from Bipolarity, were part of his file for the trial.
So for the one’s who think that he is a terrorist and a bad person he is not. he fucked up… and he is paying for it.
To answer the question about CTV showing just one side of the story and that he is probably a very bad person behind the bars.
Think again, he is a model inmate, you might want to phone DADE CI. and inquirer before making such remarks.
He is in no way a treat to the Secutiry of Canada. Come on, and if Stockwell Day thinks that way , give me one person who is incarcerated and is NOT, everyone is in prison for some reason.
“We’re tired of living with the stigma of people like Sacha. We’re tired of everyone thinking that we’re all axe murderers who are going to start swinging the moment our meds wear off”
oh, your tired of that huh. what do you think you are doing now, you are judging a person that you know absolutely nothing about. so your no better then anyone else.
People just quit while you are ahead and stop judging so harshly. There are some good people out there that screw up, not everyone is a liar or a thief or someone too stupid to load the gun..
The fact that the gun was not loaded wouldn’t mean that he probably didn’t know How to load the Gun and he just took it from the house ” as is” did anyone think about that ????
BTW I am not a family member I am a friend of the family who has know Sacha personnally since he was 2 years old. So I would think that my input in this discussion tread should be pretty good.
“oh, your tired of that huh. what do you think you are doing now, you are judging a person that you know absolutely nothing about.”
I know that he’s violent when he drinks, that he frequents strip clubs, and that he doesn’t pay his bills (remember that “exotic dancer” he didn’t compensate for her “services”?).
Good luck polishing that turd.
“Think again, he is a model inmate, you might want to phone DADE CI. and inquirer before making such remarks.”
Of course he is — he’s sober. It’s interesting how his “uncontrollable” bipolar illness just switches off and on, isn’t it? You’d think it would manifest itself under such stressful circumstances, especially if he is un-medicated.
“oh, your tired of that huh. what do you think you are doing now, you are judging a person that you know absolutely nothing about. so your no better then anyone else.”
I know when to capitalize a sentence and I’m also familiar with the difference between “your” and “you’re” (see what happens when you read the books you own?), so that puts me one up on at least one other person, here.
*polite cough*
