Guelph Tribune via National Newswatch ;

Kovach, who has been FCM president since December 2005 and whose term was supposed to end this May, announced Feb. 1 that she was seeking the Conservative nomination to run in the next federal election.
She said the trouble began soon afterwards when she met with Dion for prebudget discussions. With her at that meeting, her first with the new Liberal leader, was FCM first vice-president Gord Steeves of Winnipeg.
Dion “was not very engaging. He did not have a lot to say to us,” Kovach said.
Soon afterwards, FCM staff told her that Dion had contacted FCM and the Big City Mayors Caucus “to say he would not deal with FCM with me as president,” she said in an interview Wednesday.

Stephen Taylor;

When Mark Holland and Marlene Jennings carted property of the Conservative Party of Canada outside of the Wellington building, did they enter into another legal jurisdiction?

It’s a question the Speaker is waiting to hear answered.
Joan Tintor calls out the head of the Parliamentary Press Gallery on a few fibs;

Brennan’s concern for politicians is touching, especially coming from one of the most aggressive reporters in the history of parliamentary reporting. But his argument is (1) not true, (2) specious, and (3) futile.

Echo chamber blogging? Well, there are worse things – enter the mocking chamber!

  12. An exceptional article by John Robson in the Ottawa Citizen:
    …Mr. Dumont may not want a referendum. But his party, the National Post blurted out after the election, has since 2004 wanted Quebec to have its own constitution and citizenship because “Our first fidelity, our passion and our loyalty are toward Quebec.” It wants to rename Quebec the “Autonomist State of Quebec,” fight “submission to Canada” and affirm Quebec’s “sovereign rights.” What part of buzz off don’t you squareheads understand?

    In my youth I backpacked around the world feeling oh so Canadian/cosmopolitan when I got to translate between French and English for fuddled travelers. I’ve since realized the feeling was never mutual. In a recent iChannel TV discussion, one of my panelists gave the standard Anglo bilingualism-makes-us-a-glorious-tolerant-light-unto-the-nations speech, so I asked if it bothered him that this sentiment is alien to francophone Quebec. It should.
    While we’re busy talking about how much they love us, they’re busy talking about how much they despise us. And neither of us seems to know it, despite all the modern communications, expensively futile second-language training, and obsessive gazing from this side into that side’s navel. Maybe Mr. Dumont got his wish. Maybe Quebec quietly left and we missed it.

Worse than the popcorn/beergate episode..can someone catch, and transcribe? I am certainly going to watch the replay on newsnet. The accusations about the Cons.trying to hide something re rcmp, were unbelievable, and poor old Norquay sitting beside Duff was almost bursting..even the Dipper looked stunned at his comments.I’m sure if Scott had of been in-house panel,as opposed to sat.hookup,Geoff would have had him by the throat..screaming at Reid so loud,it reverberated thru hallway!Methinks some Libs are getting a little nervous! 20. The Dionsky Code:
    “I will fight this election whenever it comes and I will fight hard. Canadians will know who I am and what I stand for and they will know what Mr. Harper’s regime will do to this country — the smallness of ideology, the meanness of spirit, the inability to understand the enormity of Canada’s future.”
    “Canadians will know who I am and what I stand for” – right now they have no idea who I am or what I stand for. Then again, neither do I.
    The “smallness of ideology” – Harper’s not a Marxist, like me, seeking big government solutions every time, cavorting with Chairman Mo, while sticking it to the “man.”
    The “meanness of spirit” – He actually responds, in kind, when smeared by me or my “rat pack,” ignoring demands for “apologies.”
    The “inability to understand the enormity of Canada’s future” – He refuses to support giant, bloated government programs like Day Care, Long Gun Registry, HRDC boondogle or Kyoto for oil.
    His statements demonstrate nothing but paucity of policy, they are just rhetoric. (His Clarity for Flaherty quip was at least clever). The quest for power alone is their raison d’etre. That’s who he is; that’s what he stands for. Otherwise, where are their policies?
    Some speech. Some barnburner. Harper will mop the floor with this guy in the next election, especially the debate.
    Let’s have an election and put the clowns, Dionsky, Goodale, Holland, et al, out of their misery. Then LPC can get on with the ten year job of rebuilding their party, perhaps with a real leader this time.

  21. Something doesnt add up here !! Stephan Dion refuses to deal with Gloria Kovach as president of the Canadian Federation of Municipalities because she planned to seek the Conservative nomination in the next federal election ? No way this could be true !! I swear I heard Dion himself say he wants to greatly increase women members in parliament. He would never be involved in having her removed as head of CFM . In a few days we should see Stephan , along with all women Liberal MP’S come to the defence of Gloria Kovach , just wait and see………….

  22. Sammy:
    Ya I saw Scott Reid foaming at the mouth with rabies. I can’t believe what he said.
    To paraphrase:
    The ONLY reason that the Libs aren’t the government today (because in his mind all the latest polls show that Canadians like the Libs better than Harper and the Conservatives????) is because they were “screwed” by the RCMP. And that the Conservative government isn’t calling a judicial enquiry now is that they’re afraid it will turn up proof that the Conservatives are behind everything shady at the RCMP.
    This guy is a complete whack job! I am dissappointed that CTV.com conveniently doesn’t have the clip of that segment in it’s MDL section.
    I really hope someone over at a place like officiallyscrewed.com got a copy of it. Because this needs to be seen by Canadians.

  23. More on Scotty Reid on Duff:Laughs mockingly,as Geoff Norquay talks about budget, scoffs, snorts.
    Refers to PMSH as an ‘April Fools joke’
    Duff goes to end the ‘strategists’segment,Reid absolutely EXPLODES!As Reid posted above,he almost screams..’the rcmp screwed us in the last election..what is it that the Cons.don’t want uncovered? How come you won’t let an inquiry happen?’
    Geoff tries to explain what Day’s/Con.plan for this investigation is..Reid yelling..”it may as well be a book review”,then likens whoever Cons.get to oversee review,to Capt.Kangaroo!More yelling about Cons.choosing not to do all they can,and asks,’what answers don’t you want dug up?’
    Norquay, and Ann McGrath are stunned..Geoff tries to speak,Reid yells some more..”what was going on with PMSH relationship with Zac?Why was he the first one PMSH met with after he became PM?Why didn’t PMSH do something about Zac?”
    Norquay blows..he’s yelling “WE FIRED HIM”..then,”that was beneath contempt Scott”
    Duff seems stunned..goes to break, then camera pans to Fife/Galloway in wings..they too look shocked. Fife/Galloway on.
    Duff:”are they out of Valium in TO??What was that all about?”
    Fife:’The Martin clique still hasn’t gotten over Zac..Zac was close to Chretien’ talks about too much closeness between politicians, and upper echelon of rcmp..says something about Zac having arm around Chretien..goes on to really praise rank and file rcmp members..Good for you Fife!
    Galloway has to bring up Shapiro “quitting” This was just ridiculous, but I think it shows how badly the Libs are dealing with being out of power, and it’s killing them.DELICIOUS.

  24. I sent an email to duffy@ctv.ca expressing my dissappointment at them not having the video of that segment up on their website and requesting they put it up.
    I think we should start an SDA movement and flood them with email to get that video up.

  26. The Scott Reid debacle was quite entertaining. He essentially implied that the RCMP is an agent of the Conservative Party of Canada. I’m starting to think those guys actually thought there were going to be soldiers in the streets. Apparently, everyone is out to get them. Given all the hassle the media gives the Tories about how they politicize the judiciary, I’m kind of interested in seeing what they are going to say about this. Probably nothing.

  27. I caught a speech today by Dion in Montreal. Hard to understand what he was saying – lots of words but not too many concise thoughts.
    However, did anyone else hear him say that ANYONE who lost money on the Income Trust decision will be reimbursed 2/3 of their losses if he is Prime MInister!!!!!
    I am gaga. So now the taxpayer bails out stock market speculators???? What did they think – that the stock market is a guaranteed income supplement?
    What will this cost?
    Do they just mean poor seniors or how about all of the wealthy lawyers and corporate stock holders. How about Paul Martin’s friend who owns the Medysys Private health care clinics in Quebec and Ontario. He is an Income Trust.
    THIS promise is absolutely bizarre. And the media did not pick this up?

  28. In the not too distant past, I remember the “west” always mocking “eastern block countries”.
    Now it looks like the tables have been turned. It was the system all along. Not the people themselves.
    When it comes to brains, the Czech president has it all over a former American VP.
    “… The U.S. congressmen were asking how humans contribute to climate change and how these changes should be dealt with in legislation.
    Another high-ranking figure whose views were heard was former U.S. vice-president Al Gore, one of the leading voices calling for changes in human behaviour to avert an environmental catastrophe.
    Conversely, the Czech President asked the congressmen not to yield to pressure from environmentalists and abandon the principles of free society: “the biggest threat to freedom, democracy, the market economy and prosperity at the beginning of the 21st century is not communism or its various softer variants. Communism was replaced by the threat of ambitious environmentalism.”
    “This ideology,” Klaus said, “wants to replace the free and spontaneous evolution of mankind by a sort of central, now global, planning of the whole world.”
    The Czech President is strongly opposed to environmentalism, which he calls a “religion based on political ambitions rather than science,” and accuses environmentalists of using “sophisticated methods of media manipulation” to spread “fear and panic”.” (IPS)

    Turkey readying for spring offensive against PKK
    The leaves of military personnel have been canceled and additional forces have been deployed to the border with Iraq as the military apparently prepares for an operation against the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).
