Draft Fred

A campaign worth keeping your eye on;

It has been said that it takes 5,000 people to talk you out of running for President and only 5 to talk you into it. Whatever the ratio, it would be in reverse for Thompson. Surely, if the Republican electorate seems extremely unhappy, if Thompson is seen as the great conservative hope and the party fathers came to him and begged him to run, he would.

  1. I like Fred.
He has the presence, the voice, and i bet he would make rousing speeches.
He could be the next Great Communicator.

  2. Its what he believes that is important. The trend to actors and TV personalities is disturbing…Think Governor General, think “star candidates”, think future senator clooney, or the number of journalists who run up here not because they have any deep thoughts or life expereince but because they are comfortabel in front of a camera…..
Fred might be a good guy (loved his character as the Carrier Commander in Red October), and fred might be believe the right things….but this is not a good trend. Bill Clinton was a great communicator but I doubt that was saticfactory to many on this board.
Speaking of red october…I wonder if poitics ever came up between Fred Thomson and Alec Baldwin while on set….let alone tapping Sean Connery’s “socialism” :->

  3. I’m going to keep my eye on GOP presidential candidate Ron Paul….a long term populist Texas rep. who has held that seat for the Republicans for years…he is well liked in Congress by both party cabinets…that is a candidate who is valuable asset to worj\kavble constitutional government…it matters not who the pundits and Media “like”….a proper president is one who serves the constituents and the house.

  4. Stephen: I don’t see why the trend to actors is disturbing, the first thing that popped into my head when I read that was Ronald Reagan-Americas finest President ever IMHO. Thompson also has experience as a U.S. Senator and from what I have heard he was very well respected.(but I would agree with you that to hear a conversation between him a the moonbat Alex would have been interesting.)

  5. He would be a vast improvement over the “presence” GWB conveys whenever he gets infront of a mic. It would be nice for the next Leader of the Free World to posess an admirable demeanor. I’d like to see it, but maybe next time around, give McCain a shot at it. On the otehrhand, Hillary & Co. must defeated at all costs.

  6. What I was pointing at was to focus on what they believe and then can they communicate. Clinton can empathize and communicate but what did he believe…thats really my point.
People on the left and right get caught up as much in celebrity. TV anchors, and TV reporters appear on TV therefore the are “stars” but they read stuff written for them. They dont need to lead teams of people…it can be a mistake.
If it was jsut about who you like to watch then Sandra Janzen and Marcia MacMilan for PM and Carla Robinson too!

  7. I cant wait for a readers thread, lol
    WELCOME BACK KATE!!!
How about some news about the show?

  8. Thompson was a prosecutor before he was an actor, and in fact, he got his first role playing himself. He’s had several non-memorable roles since, and been a Senator. I don’t think he’s had a memorable character until Law and Order. Whether that would hurt or help him remains to be seen.

  9. “Fred might be a good guy (loved his character as the Carrier Commander in Red October), and fred might be believe the right things….but this is not a good trend.”
As noted above, Fred Thompson was in politics, government and law before he ever became an actor. He was minority (Republican) counsel to the House Judiciary Committee during Watergate, among other things. I like the guy, but I’m thinking more that the other campaigns might want to look at him for a VP pick (or AG).

  10. Bottom line here: America desperately needs a real conservative again. A charismatic one who can effectively articulate what’s what in America and the world, what must be done and what he/she’ll do.
America needs another Reagan. Not another Dubya, I’m sorry to finally conclude.
America needs a leader who will stand up and fight relentlessly for liberty, democracy, the rule of law and human rights, pulling no punches, fearlessly never backing down in the face of colossal threats like China, Islam and other mortal enemies, such as the newly belligerent nuclear power of Russia under the increasingly totalitarian KGBer Vladimir Putin.
In fact, today Canada has a brand new conservative leader who’s taking Canada into exactly such a new, assertive, unflinching direction. Americans ought to look northwards to see the kind of leader they must look for. And elect him/her.
It’s ok to articulate conservative principles and never back down when people complain that they don’t like what they hear. We don’t have to silence ourselves just because some don’t agree with us. I’m talking about standing up to the left and staring them down, no longer taking their crap!
Only true conservatism and relentless defence of liberty will save humanity from enslavement and genocide, which is continuing and spreading to this day as the leftists plug their ears, close their eyes and hum loudly…

  11. Hey CS, keep it down!!!
Didnt you know theres a DRAFT HARPER movement that has started in the States?

  12. Lee,
I know a few Liberals who would sign that Draft
    :->
My comments arent about fred t’s qualificatins per se, more that people are getting excited about him because he “looks and sounds” like a President.
He played a major weasal of a a Chief of Staff in Line of Fire

  13. For anyone who has read Senator James Webb’s book, “Born Fighting,” Fred has all the credentials he needs, and then some, to run for President.
The braintrust at Fox News Channel is wrong. The US needs a real populist right now. I appreciate McCain is deserving of deference in the Republican ranks but he is a divisive figure in the Republican party.
Fred Thompson is a true “american values” non- elitist, and popular figure in the United States. The fact that he walked away from political power and, like Raegan, is well known away from politics, might be his be his best asset.
None of the candidates for President in either party are like Fred. He stands apart from them all and is a humble leader and mos elegenic. Most important, like the article suggested, he has to want the job.

  14. Never mind Draft Fred, where is dion. I read that Chirac is going to resign so just wonder if Dion is in France sizing up his chances of replacing him.

  15. if, IF Fred Thompson can pull off a death blow to islamist terrorism the way Ronnie kiboshed communism it will be worth it.
otherwise we’re left to deal with another term of office with an image specialist in the oval office.
jessie ventura goes from the farcical WWF now WWE wrestling ring to the governor’s office in minnesota, the terminator sits in the governor’s office in californicate, Ronnie goes from almost B grade movies to head of SAG to the governor’s mansion to the white house.
great communicator pshaw, great *image cultivator* more like it.
maybe Fred is what we need, a paradigm switch; maybe wanting the job really really bad isnt correct when it leads to all manner of unethical stuff and backstabbing deal making.
maybe what is needed is a groundswell of *others* wanting him in the whiite house.
very hard to predict and assess.

  16. Fred was on Fox News Sunday and said he is keeping the door open. He comes across as a serious possible candidate.
